Memoires of Japan 1946 by Bernard T. Smith
Having served as a member of the Allied Forces' Occupation of Japan, Bernard Smith has produced a book about the time he spent in Japan in 1946 in the city of Iwakuni, near Hiroshima, both of which cities are located on the east coast of Japan alongside its beautiful Inland Sea. Except for his rather mystifying visit to Tokyo in the summer of 1946, his entire book is based almost entirely on his personal diary, and notes which he wrote while aboard his homeward bound ship at the end of his tour of duty at the end of that year, crucially when the events he describes were still very fresh in his mind. He writes about the utter devastation and despair under which people were living after the horrors of Hiroshima, about the Japanese peoples' response to the Allied Occupation, and the resilience and fortitude with which they faced up to their troubles. As opposed to formal and official documents, Bernard Smith writes about human suffering and the harsh conditions under which people were living. He tells us of his meetings with families, with whom he found relaxation from the gloom and with whom he became very friendly. He also describes how the people faithfully continued to follow their traditional Japanese customs and culture, the observance of which he believes sustained them and helped them begin their ultimate recovery.

Japan - Russia Students discussion
People in western Japan observe a tradition that honors the souls of those who have died in the past year. During ceremonies in Nagasaki Prefecture on Tuesday, residents paraded ceremonial boats that are said to carry the spirits of their loved ones. Shoro Nagashi, the Spirit Boat Procession, is held every year on August 15th. It is part of the Obon Buddhist festival, observed across Japan, during which families honor their ancestors. Authorities say about 3,500 spirit boats were prepared for this year's event in Nagasaki Prefecture. In Nagasaki City, people paraded boats of various sizes through the streets. Some of them were more than 10 meters long. The boats were decorated with flowers and lanterns, as well as photos of the deceased and their favorite items. Mourners also set off fireworks during the event.
University students from Japan and Russia gathered in Moscow to discuss relations of the two nations -- topics included planned joint economic activities on disputed islands. About 20 students took part in a forum on Tuesday and had group discussions on politics, economy and two other subjects. The event is organized by Russian and Japanese students every year. One group discussed planned joint economic activities on Russian-controlled islands claimed by Japan. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two. Japanese and Russian officials are working to flesh out the planned economic activities in a way that will not harm each country's legal stance. The students shared ideas on what kind of businesses can be operated based on that premise. Their proposals included remote medical services using the Internet. Russian students also expressed concern that US new sanctions on Russia may affect Japan-Russia relations, as Japan is a US ally. A Japanese student says he received many questions from Russian students and realized how much they are interested in Japan and the Far East. A Russian student said she believes that building better relations among young generations will lead to deeper relations between the two countries. Shotlist August 15 Moscow GV: Exterior of Moscow State Institute of International Relations GV: The student discussion taking place GV: Various shots of students exchanging opinions UP: A memo UP: A Japanese male student saying “I received many questions from Russian students and realized how much they are interested in Far East economic development.” UP: Russian female student saying “I believe that building better relations among young generations will lead to deeper relations between the two countries.”

The watch shown stopped at 8:15 (Pacific Time) when its internal working parts were melted by the nuclear fireball from the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The top picture shows the devastation wreaked on the city of Nagasaki, the bottom shows the devastation wreaked on the city of Hiroshima - the 2 Japanese cities which were destroyed by American atomic bombs at the end of World War II.
Although Truman gave the orders to drop these 2 bombs the real mothers of the atomic bomb were Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Bernard Baruch.
When Einstien arrived in the United States, he was feted as a famous scientist, and was invited to the White House by President and Mrs. Roosevelt.
His letter to Roosevelt requesting that the government inaugurate an atomic bomb program was obviously stirred by his lifelong commitment to peace and disarmament. His actual commitment was to Zionism...
The atomic bomb was developed at the Los Alamos Laboratories in New Mexico. The top secret project was called the Manhattan Project, because its secret director, Bernard Baruch, lived in Manhattan... The scientific director at Los Alamos was J. Robert Oppenheimer, scion of a prosperous family of clothing merchants. In
Oppenheimer; the Years Of Risk, by James Kunetka, Prentice Hall, NY, 1982, Kunetka writes, p. 106, Baruch was especially interested in Oppenheimer for the position of senior scientific adviser. The project cost an estimated two billion dollars. No other
nation in the world could have afforded to develop such a bomb. The first successful test of the atomic bomb occurred at the Trinity site, two hundred miles south of Los Alamos at 5:29:45 a.m. on July 16, 1945. Oppenheimer was beside himself at the spectacle. He
shrieked, I am become Death, the Destroyer of worlds. Indeed, this seemed to be the ultimate goal of the Manhattan Project, to destroy the world. There had been considerable fear among the scientists that the test explosion might indeed set off a chain reaction, which would destroy the entire world.
Oppenheimer's exultation came from his realization that now his people had attained the ultimate power, through which they could implement their five-thousand-year desire to rule the entire world.
THE BUCK PASSES TO TRUMAN
Although Truman liked to take full credit for the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, in fact, he was advised by a prestigious group, The National Defense Research Committee, consisting of George L. Harrison, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New
York; Dr. James B. Conant, president of Harvard, who had spent the First World War developing more effective poison gases, and who in 1942 had been commissioned by Winston Churchill to develop an Anthrax bomb to be used on Germany, which would have
killed every living thing in Germany. Conant was unable to perfect the bomb before Germany surrendered, otherwise he would have had another line to add to his resume. His service on Truman's Committee which advised him to drop the atomic bomb on Japan,
added to his previous record as a chemical warfare professional, allowed me to describe him in papers filed before the United States Court of Claims in 1957, as the most notorious war criminal of the Second World War.
As Gauleiter of Germany after the war, he had ordered the burning of my book, The Federal Reserve Conspiracy, ten thousand copies having been published in Oberammergau, the site of the world-famed Passion Play.
Also on the committee were Dr. Karl Compton, and James F. Byrnes, acting Secretary of State. For thirty years, Byrnes had been known as Bernard Baruch's man in Washington. With his Wall Street profits, Baruch had built the most lavish estate in South Carolina, which he named Hobcaw Barony. As the wealthiest man in South Carolina, this epitome of the carpet-bagger also controlled the political purse strings.
Now Baruch was in a position to dictate to Truman, through his man Byrnes, that he should drop the atomic bomb on Japan.

Martin Sherwin's Interview
Martin J. Sherwin is a historian and professor at George Mason University, specializing in the development of atomic weapons and nuclear policy. With Kai Bird, Sherwin co-authored American Prometheus, the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer. In this interview, Sherwin discusses Oppenheimer’s childhood, family life, and personality, including his love of the mountains of New Mexico, and his leadership at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. He also discusses why Oppenheimer did not support building the hydrogen bomb. Sherwin reflects on the decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, arguing that the atomic bombs were not necessary to end the war with Japan.

Freeman Dyson's Interview
Freeman Dyson is an esteemed mathematician and theoretical physicist at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study. In this interview, Dyson discusses his work at England’s Bomber Command in World War II, tracking the position of bomber forces. He explains the importance of scientific innovation in wartime, the effectiveness of strategic bombing campaigns, and why civil defense worked better in Germany than in Britain. Dyson later worked with Manhattan Project veterans Hans Bethe, Richard Feynman, and Robert R. Wilson, and recalls how they felt about the project. He discusses Niels Bohr and J. Robert Oppenheimer’s ideas for international control of nuclear weapons, and what methods he thinks would work best to further nonproliferation efforts today. Dyson also remembers visiting Oak Ridge, and explains Oak Ridge’s important role in building innovative nuclear reactors and conducting biological experiments.
