Cedar Falls, Logan Ohio.
This video is about Cedar Falls, which is at hocking hills state park in Logan Ohio. It is the greatest waterfall in terms of volume in the Hocking region. Queer Creek tumbles over the face of the Blackhand sandstone displaying the awesome force of water power.
In the mid 1800's, a grist mill was built above the falls to utilize this water power for grinding grain.
Cedar Falls was misnamed by early white settlers who mistook the stately hemlocks for Cedars. A well kept picnic area and restrooms are located in the parking area above the falls.

Fabulous Trail to Cedar Falls, Hocking Hills State Park, Logan, Ohio
Cedar Falls was running hard during our winter trip to Hocking Hills, and it was inviting to hear the sound of the falls grow more intense the closer we got to Cedar Falls. The beautiful trail includes several bridges over the fast meandering stream. The 50 foot waterfall at Cedar Falls is among the most magnificent waterfalls in Ohio and is said to be the largest waterfall in the Hocking Hills by volume. The name Cedar Falls is a misnomer, because the settlers to the area misidentified the stately hemlock trees as cedar trees; consequently, this park was incorrectly named, and the name Cedar Falls has been used ever since.
Detour on Trail from Cedar Falls, Hocking Hills State Park, Logan, Ohio
There are several ways to hike to Cedar Falls and we returned on a different trail than the one we hiked to get to the falls. Unfortunately, a small footbridge had washed away, and back tracked to get to the parking area.

The Cedar Falls Trail Hike
The Petit Jean Mountain State Park Cedar Falls Trail Hike
with the U.C.A. Student Physics Society!
Living on top of Petit Jean Mountain Arkansas and right next to the Petit Jean Mountain State Park there's always lots to do and plenty of fun to be had. One of our favorite things to do in the state park is hike and one of our favorite hikes in the state park is the Cedar Falls Trail. Beginning right behind the state park lodge, the Cedar Falls Trail skirts the side of the Cedar Creek Canyon all the way down to its floor and then follows the creek all the way up to where the trail culminates at the beautiful and scenic Cedar Falls.
On this particular day my oldest son, Tony Bertram, was home from school and he had brought about 20 of his friends and fellow students from the University of Central Arkansas' Student Physics Association. Their mission was to hike the falls and when they asked us if we would like to tag along, we were only too happy to accept the invitation. And what a good time and a great adventure we all had together, too! Yes, we hope that you enjoy watching the show on this one...because we sure did have a fun time making it :-)

Hocking Hills State Park, Logan Ohio - Grandma Gatewood Trail - 10-18-12
At Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, the North Country Trail, Buckeye Trail, and the American Discovery Trail coincide and a six-mile section is designated as the Grandma Gatewood Trail. It connects Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. The Appalachian Trail Museum includes information about Grandma Gatewood in its exhibits and in June 2012, she was inducted into the Appalachian Trail Hall of Fame.
Emma Rowena Gatewood, better known as Grandma Gatewood (October 25, 1887--June 4, 1973), was an extreme hiker and ultra-light hiking pioneer who was the first woman to hike the 2,168-mile (3,489 km) Appalachian Trail from Mount Oglethorpe in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine solo, and in one season.
Family life:
Gatewood was born in Guyan Township, Gallia County, Ohio. She was a farmer's wife who had eleven children and 24 grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild living at the time of her death at 85.
Hiking:
Gatewood hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1955 at the age of 67, wearing Keds sneakers and carrying an army blanket, a raincoat, and a plastic shower curtain which she carried in a homemade bag slung over one shoulder, thus making her a pioneer of Ultralight backpacking. Local newspapers picked up on her story, leading to a profile in Sports Illustrated when she had reached Connecticut and an appearance on the Today Show.
She had read about it in a National Geographic Magazine. I thought it would be a nice lark, she said, adding It wasn't. Another time she complained For some fool reason, they always lead you right up over the biggest rock to the top of the biggest mountain they can find.
She hiked it again in 1960 and then again at age 75 in 1963, making her the first person to hike the trail three times (though her final hike was completed in sections).[2] She was also credited with being the oldest female thru-hiker by the Appalachian Trail Conference until 2007.
In addition, she walked 2,000 miles (3,200 km) of the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri, to Portland, Oregon, averaging 22 miles (35 km) a day. She traveled to every state of the continental United States.
In 1970, at age 83, while visiting Appalachian Outfitters in Oakton, Virginia she was asked what she thought about the latest lightweight backpacking gear. Emma advised: Make a rain cape, and an over the shoulder sling bag, and buy a sturdy pair of Keds tennis shoes. Stop at local groceries and pick up Vienna sausages... most everything else to eat you can find beside the trail... and by the way those wild onions are not called Ramps... they are Rampians ... a ramp is an inclined plane.
Gatewood was a life member of the National Campers and Hikers Association and the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club. She was Director Emeritus and a lifetime member of the Buckeye Trail Association.

Awesome Rock Formations-Along the Trail to Cedar Falls
Cedar Falls Hike in Hocking Hills
How often does a mom get to spend time with her grown son and dog? That's what I was been blessed with recently. Our son Benjamin, who is home from college, and his dog Marco and I took a beautiful hike to Cedar Falls. Very few people are on the trails in the winter which is why it is one of my favorite reasons to hike this time of year in the Hocking Hills. That, and, the ice formations and waterfalls are spectacular. Marco had a good time too frolicking in the snow and sliding on the ice.
Benjamin had given me a gift certificate from the Wind Chime Shop for Christmas. Following our hike, we went there and listened to lots of wind chimes until I found just the right one to bring home.
A mom couldn't ask for a better way to Ring in the New Year!
Winter Hiking in Hocking Hills: Cantwell Cliffs
I've quite a few trails around Hocking Hills but had never visited Cantwell Cliffs before today. Josh, Ryan (he's new to the channel!) and me take in the scenery. The sheer scale in this area is pretty impressive. Numerous waterfalls, cliff faces and a fun feature called Fat Woman's Squeeze (I didn't name it!) are some of the highlights on this hike. Hocking Hills is hands down one of my favorite hiking in Ohio spots.

We day hike from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls. Some great footage of Devil's Bathtub. Hocking Hills is a great place to visit especially in the winter for some fairly easy hiking.
