Civico Museo d'Arte Orientale - Trieste
museoarteorientaletrieste.it

Civico Museo d'Arte Orientale - Trieste [ENG]
The Civico Museo d'Arte Orientale is situated in the heart of Trieste, just a stone's throw from Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia.
Exhibits are arranged on four levels and include Oriental artworks, arms, musical instruments and ethnographic objects, mainly from China and Japan. On the ground-floor, acting as an introduction, one can see how commercial relations were established between Trieste and the East, starting in the 1700s and developing in the 1800s, when the ships of the Austrian Lloyd Shipping Company left Trieste and passed along the Suez Canal, finally reaching the far-away coasts of India, China and Japan. A special space is dedicated to an interesting group of sculptures from the Gandhara, dating from between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, which were collected during the Italian expedition to the summit of K2 in 1954.
The 1st floor is dedicated to Chinese art, including embroidered silk dresses and textiles from the late Qing Dynasty (19th century); china dating from the Song Dynasty (11th-13th centuries) to the late Qing Dynasty (19th century); sculptures and objects connected to Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism -- China's religions.
On the two upper floors, the Museum displays its Japanese section, starting with porcelain, and culminating in the hall which houses the Ukiyo-e - i.e. the Images from the Floating World - print collection, with works by great Japanese masters such as Hiroshige and Hokusai, with his famous Wave.
It is possible to get a glimpse of traditional kabuki theatre, to get closer to the rites and traditions of Shinto and Buddhism and finally, through the rich collection of arms and armoury from the 15th to the 19th centuries, to explore a Samurai's life and moral code.

[ENG]
The city of Trieste, the main port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, maintained strong commercial links with the land of the Nile, where Trieste merchants bought ancient artefacts, big and small, which found their way into the city museum's collections. Its Egyptian section, consisting of over a thousand items, is one of the main ones in Northern Italy, providing a broad perspective on the civilization of ancient Egypt, as well as a strong educational value.
Exhibits on display in the various rooms include bigger items such as a granite sarcophagus - over six tons in weight-, one in limestone and three in wood, plastered and painted - all three containing mummies and dating back to around 3,000 years ago. Other items consist of scenes about the adoration of the gods, the creation of the world, the weighing of the soul and deities 'protecting' the deceased. The hieroglyphs repeat traditional ritual formulas and perpetuate the names of their ancient owners.
Special attention has been paid to the three human mummies -- one of which is intact, with its original bandages still in place. The mummies have been subjected to non-invasive CAT scans. This has allowed scientists to explore the bodies and the mummification techniques, as well as to diagnose diseases and, in one case, establish the cause of death. The anthropometric data from the scans were fed into a special software program, similar to those used by forensic police departments; this achieved the reconstruction of the faces of people who have been dead for over three thousand years.
The collection includes three steles and one pyramidion (a pyramid capstone) - all of which are inscribed stone funerary monuments; four excellent quality papyrus sheets, with vivid inscriptions, from a 15th-century-BC 'Book of the Dead'; and a very fine complete series of four canopic jars in Egyptian alabaster, containing female viscera.
Thematic cabinets are dedicated to the main deities; sacred animals and zoo-anthropomorphic deities; ushabtis figurines, i.e. the deceased's 'servants', in stone, wood and faïence (glazed earthenware), from the 18th to the 30th dynasties (three are of Pharaoh Seti I); and a rich array of amulets, comprising some examples of outstanding craftsmanship.
The display of items from the Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods conclude the overview of the different successive cultures which inhabited the area along the Nile.

Civico Museo di Storia ed Arte - Orto Lapidario - Trieste [ENG]
The history of the 'Orto Lapidario' and of the 'Museo d'Antichità', currently known as the 'Civico Museo di Storia ed Arte', started in 1833 with the inauguration of the monument to Winckelmann, the renowned German historian and antiquarian who was tragically murdered in Trieste in 1768. The monument became the starting point of the future museum, which was created with the express purpose to cultivate and promote the local study of archaeology and art. Indeed Trieste, thanks to its geographical position and its maritime trade, was able to attract items from the classical lands, from Egypt, and from places as far as Mesoamerica. The aim of acquiring such artefacts was to provoke in the locals a love of beauty, to attract foreign experts as well as to educate local artists and craftsmen.
The 'Orto Lapidario' houses ancient Roman exhibits from Aquileia, the Istria peninsula and Tergeste. These form a vast array of ancient sepulchral, honorary and sacred epigraphy from between the 1st and 5th centuries AD.
In the little temple lies the monument to Winckelmann, a neoclassical work by sculptor Antonio Bosa, which is surrounded by Greek and Roman classical sculptures. These exhibits represent the oldest core of the city's collections, which at the end of the 18th century belonged to the 'Accademia degli Arcadi Sonziaci'.
The garden opposite the museum building, surrounded by a wall with towers, and dating back to the 1400s and 1500s, houses mediaeval and modern items from the city.
In the Museum one can retrace the pre-history of the Karst plateau around Trieste from 80,000 years ago through items found in the caves and similar shelters found in the rocks.
Pottery, arms and personal ornaments from the Bronze and Iron Ages come from settlements called 'castellieri', and their respective necropoles, one of which - the one from Santa Lucia di Tolmino - stands out with its more than 7,000 tombs complete with grave goods.
There is a vast Roman collection from Aquileia, enriched by additional items found either locally or around the Mediterranean basin. These include sculptures and objects of daily use, imperial and private portraits, statuettes and bronze deities and a rich series of bronze, ceramic, glass, amber and bone artefacts, deriving mainly from dwellings and graves.
The Greek section displays a vast repertoire of Attic and Magna Graecia pottery, providing an historical overview that ranges from the Archaic to the whole of the Hellenistic periods. These items are noteworthy in terms of quantity, size, beauty and originality. The finds from the Taranto excavation site are especially interesting: reliefs and terracotta figures, antefixes and vases. And the impressive embossed silver rhyton: a ritual vase in the shape of a fawn's head made in around 400 BC - this is the museum's pièce de résistance.
Finally, a smaller room houses the Collezione Fabietti from El Salvador. This includes vases, instruments, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic terracotta figurines, illustrating the traditions of a farming community which lived in contact with the great Mayan culture between 600 and 1,000 AD.

Civico Museo Morpurgo - Trieste [ENG]
Standing out at the corner between via Imbriani and via Mazzini, is the imposing building erected in 1875 to a design by Giovanni Berlam and commissioned by brothers Carlo Marco and Giacomo Morpurgo. The façades, decorated with plain inserts and corbels, extend on four levels and are interspersed by four balconies.
The second floor houses the (approximately 600m2) apartment which Mario Morpurgo de Nilma donated to the Comune di Trieste so that it could become a museum. Its opulent furnishings mirror the typical eclectic taste of the second half of the 19th century. The premises have maintained an integrity that conveys a striking atmosphere and brings to life the vivid memory of the family who lived in it for two generations. Each sitting room is characterised by a different colour scheme and style, and each room is perfectly preserved: the carved wooden floors, the ceilings, the plaster cornices, the French lace curtains, and the furniture. The latter, by virtue of how it is arranged and in the abundance of armchairs and sofas, reveals the busy social function which these rooms served: musical and cultural soirées used to be organised, as well as poetry readings and presentations of the most recent objets d'art.

Risiera di San Sabba is a former rice-husking facility that was built in 1913. After September 8, 1943, the Nazi occupation forces used the premises as prison camp, headquarters where deported prisoners were sorted out to be sent to Germany and Poland, raided goods depot, prison and extermination camp for hostages, partisans, political and Jewish prisoners. On April 4, 1944 a crematory plant was installed and made operative. In 1965, a decree issued by the President of the Republic raised the Risiera di San Sabba to the status of National Monument. As of 1975, following restructuring interventions according to architect Romano Boico's plan, the premises

Places to see in ( Trieste - Italy )
Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, Trieste occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border on the limestone-dominated Karst Plateau. Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are all evident in its layout, which encompasses a medieval old city and a neoclassical Austrian quarter.
Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. Trieste is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of Italian territory lying between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia, which lies almost immediately south and east of the city of Trieste . Trieste is also located near Croatia some further 30 kilometres (19 mi) south. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste and throughout history it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures.
Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy. In the 19th century, it was the most important port of one of the Great Powers of Europe. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague). In the fin de siècle period at the end of the 19th century it emerged as an important hub for literature and music. Trieste underwent an economic revival during the 1930s, and Trieste was an important spot in the struggle between the Eastern and Western blocs after the Second World War. Today, the city is in one of the richest regions of Italy, and has been a great centre for shipping, through its port (Port of Trieste), shipbuilding and financial services.
Trieste lies in the northernmost part of the high Adriatic in northeastern Italy, near the border with Slovenia. The city lies on the Gulf of Trieste. In 2012, Lonely Planet listed the city of Trieste as the world's most underrated travel destination.
