Dove Cottage: Curator's Highlights
Our Curator, Jeff Cowton, talks about some highlights that can be found inside Dove Cottage, William Wordsworth's former home.
A Journey to Dove Cottage Fakhr Alkhairy
William Wordworth was one of the great Romantic poets of 19th-century England. His poems celebrated the glories of nature and the human spirit while using the simple language of the common man -- a radical idea for the time. Wordsworth studied at Cambridge University and then traveled in France during the Revolution, an experience which affected deeply his own political leanings
The Lake District, also known as The Lakes or Lakeland, is a rural area in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes and its mountains (or fells), and its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets.
The central and most-visited part of the area is contained in the Lake District National Park—one of fourteen National parks in the United Kingdom. It lies entirely within Cumbria, and is one of England's few mountainous regions. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park. The Lake District also contains Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

Near Dove Cottage, close to Grasmere...by the leech gatherer's pond.

Explore Dove Cottage - once home to Dorothy and William Wordsworth
This video is from ‘William Wordsworth: Poetry, People and Place’ is a free online course by the University of Lancaster available on FutureLearn.com
December 1799 marked the start of William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy making a real home together at Dove Cottage in Grasmere. After William married Mary Hutchinson in 1802, Dorothy continued to live with them and to help look after their children. Dorothy’s life was a remarkable one for a woman of her day. Famously, William wrote of Dorothy in one of his poems: ‘She gave me eyes, she gave me ears’.
This film takes us into Dove Cottage itself with Professor Sharon Ruston to explore this house as a home. We see various objects associated with Dorothy and think about the experience of living and writing here.

Lake District, England: Wordsworth Country
For poets, William Wordsworth's Dove Cottage is the top sight of the Lake District. Wordsworth — whose appreciation of nature and a back-to-basics lifestyle put this area on the map — spent his most productive years in this well-preserved stone house. The adjacent museum displays original writings, sketches, and personal items that give another peek into the life and world of the poet. Subscribe at for weekly updates on more European destinations.

I wandered lonely as a cloud...
When I learned this poem in university in Providence university I was confusing in which kind of view or place that the poet can write this beautiful poem.
After visiting the Lake District I have no doubts on it.
Lake District is such a pretty place
It's a shame that I just be there for two Days.
I will visit there again!
Do you like Poetry?
So far I had learned many poem in the past three year, but I am not good at this genre. Sometimes it is easy to understand a poem however sometimes it takes years to understand.
Interested isn't it?

Revisiting Wordsworth's Dove cottage in Grasmere, Lake District. First visit was in summer 1973. Unfortunately, we got there a little too late...the cottage was already closed.
