Living Treasures
On Monday I got to go to Living Treasures in New Castle Pennsylvania. It was one of the coolest places I have ever been! I got to feed a giraffe and pet a baby zebra! If you are ever in Pennsylvania you should totally check it out. I am going to be vlogging more and taking photos less. The music I used was Too Close by Alex Clare. I do not own anything.

Wild SideTV-Nashville's Old Growth Forest
This is a story about amazing discovery of hidden treasure. And no, we're not talking about kind of treasure Indiana Jones finds. This one is an ancient forest, untouched by people for hundreds, maybe thousands of years, aplace where nature has reigned since a time before history. And the amazing part is that it lies within the city limits of Nashville. You could call it a library of nature. That's why students from Austin Peay State University descended on one of Tennessee's oldest forests, finding and counting the many plants, birds, and animals that live there. Wild Side Guide Craig Owensby takes us with these young scientists as they venture into the forest primeval. From show 2703. Visit our website at wildsideTV.com to learn more.

abandoned ghost town (urban exploration): red house, new york
There's not much abandoned buildings here, but this place has a neat story, so i tried to find where the original house might have been.
The story goes that back in the 19th century, loggers would float with their logs from upstate new york down the allegheny river to the mills in pittsburgh, a journey which took three days. The return trip, walking upriver, took three weeks.
At a place where a creek joins the river stood a house which served as a landmark for these travelers, due to its unusual size and deep crimson color. But the family who lived there was said to have been torn apart by the civil war, leaving the home abandoned, and some said haunted.
By 1879 the house was described as long ago having fallen to ruin and vanished, but the creek that joins the river where the house once stood, was still known as red house creek, and when the town was established, it was also named red house.
much of the town of red house was absorbed into the allegany state park in 1921, leaving only a small downtown area and a hamlet called frecks, named after the family that had lived in the original red house.
The interstate that was built thru the area in the 1950's severed the road between the downtown and the hamlet, and the downtown area slowly faded away, leaving the hamlet as the last remaining neighborhood in the town, and also leaving the town as the least populated town in all of New York State.
I am trying to get to the old downtown area, to see what can be seen.
00:20 - this was the road between the downtown and the hamlet. it now ends at the entry ramp of the interstate. i try to get to the town this way but the road is too flooded.
00:56 - now i am trying a different way, after having backtracked to the city of salamanca and found an old frontage road that runs parallel to the interstate. before the interstate was built, this frontage road would have been the main road between red house and salamanca.
01:26 - there were several of these little side roads i was unable to explore due to time and weather
02:05 - the allegheny river
02:44 - this weird intersection is where the old downtown was
05:11 - a wild animal sharpens its claws here
07:31 - the red house creek meets the allegheny river right behind the closest grove of trees you see growing on these islands. the original red house was said to stand at the place where the creek and river meet.
08:21 - from here on is random footage from the hamlet and other random isolated buildings sprinkled around the township

26. History by Design: The Tumacácori Visitor Center as Historical Pastiche
The “Organic Act” that created the National Park Service in 1916 as the federal agency responsible for the protection and management of the then current and all future parks and monuments, also stipulated “…by such means and measures as conform to the fundamental purpose of the said parks, monuments and reservations, which purpose is to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Since the 1980s some critics have argued that the language contained in the preamble to the Organic Act is contradictory in its mandate to accommodate use while preserving resources “unimpaired” at the same time. Others have argued that the Organic Act is neither contradictory nor was Congress ignorant of the specific language used or its intended meaning. (Winks 1997, 2016)
In order to “promote and regulate” those parks and monuments as a national system of “scenic landscapes and natural and scientific curiosities” as well as “great educational enterprises,” the new agency quickly recognized the need to provide visitor amenities in the form of the visitor center. Recent scholarship has begun to examine the rise of the National Park Service visitor center in terms of its planning and architectural design, as related to NPS expansion during the Work Projects Administration of the 1930s and 40s and later updating and modernizing through the post war Mission 66 Program. Regional contextualism, defined as fitting into the natural or cultural setting, was fundamental to these efforts yet much research remains to understand the different approaches taken at individual parks. Often equated to ‘rustic’ design employing local materials and/or vernacular uses of those materials, occasionally more ambitious efforts were employed to design a visitor center to educate the public by displaying the very cultural traditions of the monument(s) it served.
The Visitor Center at Tumacácori is one such well documented example that involved a team of distinguished professionals who traveled to northern Mexico to survey the Sonoran Chain of missions, produce a remarkable folio of measured drawings, renderings, and photographs, and using traditional construction techniques, create a historical pastiche that was meant to compile the best examples of Sonoran Spanish Colonial design and details. While other visitor centers attempted to reference local building traditions through their design and construction, few, if any, display the level of scholarship, intent, and integrity as at Tumacácori .
This paper will recount the early preservation history of Tumacácori National Historical Park beginning in 1908 including the significance of its enabling legislation to preserve the site as a ruin. This early precedent, so critical in defining the preservation ethos for many historical monuments in the region, allowed site stewards to consider a variety of novel approaches to the preservation and display of the mission church, culminating in the 1930s in the design and construction of a new Visitor Center that was as instructional for its regional colonial details and construction as it was functional for basic visitor needs.

Author Talks: Cesare Pavese and America
September 27, 2018
The UMass Amherst Italian Studies Program and the Libraries hosted a panel discussion to celebrate the acquisition of an important collection of Cesare Pavese's books, a gift from Lawrence G. Smith, author of Cesare Pavese and America.
At the time of his death Pavese (1908-1950) was one of Italy's best-known writers. A poet, novelist, literary critic, and translator, he had been profoundly influenced in his early years by American literature. As a scholar and translator, he introduced Italian readers to Melville's Moby-Dick, and to several other American authors.
Speakers:
Lawrence G. Smith: “'To Connie, who understands, from Cesare.' Four books inscribed by Pavese to Constance Dowling.
Mark Pietralunga: “'To my dear Buddy in America, who let me in a new world': Rivisiting the First Chapter of Pavese's Discovery of America”
Geoffrey Brock: Into a Rhythm: Translating Pavese's Poetry into English
Andrea Malaguti: First Love, Last Rites: Cesare Pavese and the Film Imagery
Co-sponsors: Dean's Office, Humanities and Fine Arts; Italian Studies Program; Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; UMass Amherst Libraries; UMass Press.
