New cardinals react as they are greeted by friends and family
(28 Jun 2018) Pope Francis gave the Catholic Church 14 new cardinals on Thursday, with many of the choices reflecting his determination that the church be known for tireless attention to those on society's margins.
He also turned his attention to countries located far from the Vatican after centuries of European dominance of the ranks of cardinals, honouring churchmen from Peru, Madagascar and Japan, which has a tiny minority of Catholics.
Among those receiving the cardinals' biretta - a crimson-red square cap with three ridges - was Peru's new cardinal, Huancayo Archbishop Pedro Barreto Jimeno, a Jesuit like Pope Francis.
Speaking to reporters inside the Vatican Paul VI Hall during a post-ceremony reception, Baretto Jimeno said that the social exclusion of migrants is an issue all must address.
The cardinal also stressed that humanity is at stake when people, especially women, are mistreated.
With Thursday's ceremony, there are now 226 cardinals worldwide, 74 of them named by Francis during his 5-year-old papacy.
Of that total, 125 cardinals are younger than 80 and can vote in a conclave for the next pope when the current pope dies or resigns: 59 of them appointed by Francis, 47 by Pope Benedict XVI, his predecessor, and 19 named by Pope John Paul II.
Three of those named Thursday are too old to participate in selecting the next pope.
In his homily, Francis told the new cardinals to avoid the quest of honors, jealousy, envy, intrigue, accommodation and compromise.
Other new cardinals include:
Monsignor Antonio dos Santos Marto, bishop of Leiria-Fatima, which includes Portugal's popular shrine town;
Monsignor Desire Tsarahazana, archbishop of Toamasina, Madagascar;
Monsignor Thomas Aquinas Manyo, who was bishop of Hiroshima before Francis made him archbishop of Osaka, Japan;
Monsignor Luis Ladaria, a Spanish theologian who heads the powerful Vatican office in charge of ensuring doctrinal orthodoxy;
Monsignor Giovanni Angelo Becciu, an Italian whose diplomatic career includes serving as ambassador to Cuba;
Monsignor Angelo De Donatis, the Rome vicar general;
The three new prelates too old to vote in a conclave included Sergio Obeso Rivera, Emeritus Archbishop of Xalapa, Mexico; Spanish priest Aquilino Bocos Merino; and Bolivian Monsignor Toribio Ticona Porco.

E154: Tour of Hacksaw Ridge - WW2 Okinawa Battle Sights
Always intrigued by the people who walked before them, The Crew were honored to receive a personal tour of the WW2 battle sights of Okinawa - the bloodiest battle in the Pacific, sadly glossed over in history class in favor of the European theatre. Allied forces and saw some of the worst fighting of the war in the Pacific. In fact, the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima were so bad, it made it clear that dropping the atomic bombs on Japan were the only way to avoid losing more American lives and end the war. In the end, more lives were lost in Okinawa and Iwo Jima than the combined loss of life from the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombs.
Chaplin Alf Mathews from Torii Station walks Viv and Erik from the first Allied landing on Torii Beach, to Kakazu Ridge and on to the now movie famous Hacksaw Ridge. It was here that Private Desmond Doss saved a hundred men from atop the ridge, lowering them to safety throughout the night ... not once firing a gun. He earned himself a Medal of Honor for his bravery and inspired the Mel Gibson 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge. The Crew also explore under the ridge, crawling into the extensive cave system under the ridge, used by the Japanese to successfully protect themselves from Allied artillery, making it very hard for the American soldiers to take the ridge.
Although littered with WW2 history - from pill boxes and underground cave systems used by the Japanese, they also explore a much older history - walls of Ryukyu Castles, still standing from the 15th Century.

【with English subtitles】TSS報道特別番組 ヒロシマを遺した男 〜原爆資料館誕生物語〜「The man who left us the legacy of Hiroshima」
The man who left us the legacy of Hiroshima – the hidden story behind the Peace Memorial Museum –
2:00-2:55 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2014
(Re-run 2:00-2:55 a.m. Thursday, August 7)
The Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima City is known both domestically and abroad as an institution that relays the truth about the atomic bombing of HIROSHIMA. It is a “negative legacy” rarely seen in the world that attracts 1.4 million visitors each year. What is little known now, is that this museum was created by the perseverance of one scholar.
1945. Mr. Shogo Nagaoka was teaching geology and mineral science at Hiroshima Bunrika University (now Hiroshima University). He entered Hiroshima City the day after the atomic bomb was dropped. He was shocked at the countless “thorns” that had developed on the surface of the stone lantern at Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine that he had sat down on. Being a stone expert, he immediately realized that this was a special kind of bomb. From then on, he commuted into Hiroshima, now in ruins, tirelessly collecting stones, roof tiles, bottles, and other burned objects.
After the War ended, Mr. Nagaoka was selected as one of the five geology specialists in an atomic bomb investigation team set up by the national government. In addition to Hiroshima, he also surveyed Nagasaki and in no time, his personal stone and roof tile collection had increased significantly.
In 1949, the city of Hiroshima opened an Atomic Bomb Reference Materials Display Room in the central community center and started displaying Mr. Nagaoka’s collection. However, at the time, when rubble still remained in the burnt aftermath, the collected “A-bomb material” was not something that interested the people. Still, Mr. Nagaoka persisted, appealing to those who visited, “exactly what happened in that instant.” Finally, in August 1955, the A-Bomb Museum was opened. Mr. Nagaoka was appointed first director. As director, he worked to encourage school excursions from across Japan to visit and made a special effort to convey the horror of the atomic bomb to many people. Nevertheless, the world had entered the nuclear age… At the A-Bomb Museum, an “Atoms for Peace Exhibit” was held, while the materials were transferred to a small community center. Today, there is not much information left about the first Director Mr. Shogo Nagaoka.
In this program, while relying on the few clues available, we visit people in Japan and abroad who had some knowledge of the day and follow the path of the man who made the A-Bomb Museum. What was it that he put his life on the line to convey?
[Director Norio Maeda]
Not a day goes by that I don’t see tourists from other countries carrying backpacks, in Hiroshima. Today, more than 1.5 million foreigners come from far away to this land, mainly to see the A-Bomb Museum. If it weren’t for one man, who walked around picking up burnt stones and roof tiles after the atomic bomb was dropped, I believe Hiroshima City would look completely different today. Unfortunately, however, practically no record of that man, Shogo Nagaoka remains here in Hiroshima. Through this program, I hope that you are able to feel Mr. Nagaoka’s motives that, even today, continue to move the hearts of people from all over the world.

OKINAWA Farmstay | Best WWOOFing Experience Ever!!!
My second WWOOFing experience! This time I stayed on a farm in Ogimi Village, Okinawa, Japan. Every day we alternated between working in the fields and helping out at the organic restaurant attached to the farm. I'll never forget our host's kindness and all of the sweet memories we made together. If you have a few weeks to spare, I highly recommend giving WWOOFing in Okinawa a try! It's one of the best forms of cultural immersion and offers a much deeper level of interaction with the local community.
