Places to see in ( Pompei - Italy ) Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Rosary
The Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei (Italian: Pontificio Santuario della Beata Vergine del Santo Rosario di Pompei) is a Roman Catholic cathedral, Marian pontifical shrine and minor basilica commissioned by Bartolo Longo, located in Pompei, Italy. It is the see of the Territorial Prelature of Pompei.
Bartolo Longo started restoring a church in disrepair in October 1873 and promoted a festival in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. In 1875, Longo obtained a painting of Our Lady of the Rosary from a convent in Naples and raised funds to restore the image so as to locate it in the church. Miracles began to be reported and pilgrims began flocking in droves to the church. Three hundred people of the area pledged a penny a month for the work. Bartolo Longo was encouraged by Giuseppe Formisano, Bishop of Nola, to begin the construction of a larger church—the cornerstone being laid on the 8 May 1876. The church was consecrated on the 7 May 1891 by Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta, representing Pope Leo XIII. Pope Benedict XVI presented his sixth Golden Rose to the shrine on the 19 October 2008.
The original building built between 1876 and 1891 and designed by Antonio Cua followed a Latin cross plan. It was only 420 square metres (4,500 sq ft). The construction of the façade, work of Giovanni Rispoli, started on the 15 May 1893. The facade culminates with the statue of the Virgin of the Rosary (18,000 kg (40,000 lb), 3.25 m (10.7 ft)), work of Gaetano Chiaromonte, carved from a single block of Carrara marble, beneath which are placed the word PAX and the year MCMI (1901).
To accommodate the increasing numbers of pilgrims, the sanctuary was expanded between 1934 and 1939 from one to three aisles, keeping its Latin cross plan. The project was designed by the architect-priest Monsignor Spirito Maria Chiapetta. Each new aisle has three altars on each side. The new building with its 2,000 square metres (22,000 sq ft) can accommodate up to 6,000 people. The 80-metre (260 ft) bell tower built between 1912 and 1925 was designed by Aristide Leonori, assisted by his brother Pio Leonori.
The painting of Our Lady of the Rosary with its bronze gilt frame is presented to the pilgrims on the high altar. The venerated painting depicts the Virgin Mary and Child Jesus presenting rosaries to Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. Originally bought by Dominican priest Alberto Radente for eight carlini in Naples, it was offered to Bartolo Longo on the 13 November 1875 for the church he was building in Pompei. An attempt was made by an amateur to restore it, and it was placed in the church on 13 February 1876, the foundation day for the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary there. In 1880 the famous Italian painter, Federico Madlarelli, offered to restore the image. It was again finally restored by Vatican artists in 1965.

The Virgin of Pompeii
All of Italy is dotted with Marian shrines. And one of the most beloved is certainly that of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary in Pompeii. The start of shrine’s construction dates back to May 1876, in the wake of the arrival of the icon of the Virgin of the Rosary that the lawyer Bartolo Longo, who had had a strong spiritual experience walking in the countryside nearby, had sent to Pompeii. The inspiration was strong. A voice suggested to him: "If you want salvation, spread the Rosary to all around you. It is the promise of Mary, whoever propagates the Rosary shall be saved!"In 1901, seeing the great crowds of pilgrims, Pope Leo XIII consecrated the shrine as "the Parish of the World."The construction was begun, as willed by Bartolo Longo who was proclaimed Blessed by Pope John Paul II on October 26th, 1980, and was made possible by donations and gifts from around the world. Particularly significant was that of "a penny a month" from all the inhabitants of the Pompeii Valley.Bartolo Longo, a promoter of devotion to the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii, wrote numerous texts and prayers, some of which are considered true "best sellers" of Marian literature world-wide.The wish he expressed on the day of the inauguration of the shrine’s façade was to see the Pope bless the crowds of faithful and invoke peace for the world from the Shrine’s balcony, and it would ultimately be fulfilled: On October 21st, 1979 John Paul II went as pilgrim to the shrine of Pompeii.John Paul II visited yet again on October 7th 2003, to close the Year of the Rosary that he himself had called for.Benedict XVI also visited the Shrine on October 19th, 2008, bestowing the “Golden Rose” to the Blessed Virgin, an honorary gift of recognition that popes formerly granted to sovereigns.Other renowned shrines have also received this Golden Rose: Fatima in Portugal, Aparecida in Brazil, Lujan in Argentina and Guadalupe in Mexico.“Glorious Queen of the Holy Rosary, who chose the Pompeii Valley as the new throne of your power, Daughter of God the Father, Mother of God the Son, and Spouse of God the Holy Spirit, I beg you, by your joys, your sufferings and glories, by the Mystery of the Incarnation, in honor of which I have approached the Holy Altar, deign to grant me this grace.”mariedenazareth.comsantuario.it

Pompei: a city of beliefs and secrets
The city has a lot to offer thanks to the world-famous archaeological site and the place of prayer. The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary is popular and one of the most important places for many believers.
This pilgrimage church was built between 1876 and 1901. Construction of the 80 m. high bell tower was only finished in 1925.
Because of the inhabitants, the numerous tourists and pilgrims from all over Italy who worship the church, the space became too small and the church had to be enlarged.
Many relics and valuable images are kept in the sanctuary. The 17th century Marie miraculous picture was painted by a student of Luca Giodano.

OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY AT POMPEII, by Elisabetta Valgiusti for EWTN
The programme explains the development of the devotion to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary from Middle Age to our days.
The history of the Rosary is bound to a very special event that takes us back to the victory of the Christians in the naval battle of Lepanto against the muslims on October 7th 1571 . Pope st. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Virgin Mary invoked through the prayer of the Rosary.
The following year, in 1572, Pius V commemorated with the title of Blessed Virgin of the Victory the memory of the presence of the Virgin Mary at the side of the Christians, estabilishing the feast on October the 7 th .

History of the Sanctuary of Pompei 7

Holy Place of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary - Videoguide
The Pompeii Basilica is an intimate pause from the frenetic everyday flow; a sweet quietness for the soul; it’s meditation, research and contemplation: its soft light is everywhere, the mild splendor of the golden decorated backgrounds, the opulence of the marble and carvings capture the visitors, wrapping them into an elegant but light atmosphere.
Every picture is a deep breathe which enlarges their heart.
Delicate, small and evocative, the picture of the Rosary Madonna is almost suspended in the majesty of the space which invites the visitors to stop in those places. It exhorts them to breathe the infinity and taste its divine essence. ‘A holy place of brotherhood in the world’: this is the definition given by its founder, Bartolo Longo, it’s a link among men’s hearts, united with a ‘chain of sweetness and love, with the chain of the Holy Rosary’.
This brotherhood bound among men is strong still today -full with Blessed Bartolo Longo’s charisma- when the new poor people are hosted in the Works of Mercy that he himself founded.
An ancient wind brings the visitors back to the votive offers of the pagan period. The ex voto to the Madonna tell us about the ancestral need for an intimate and immediate relationship with what is divine. The Christian message has revolutionized the core of the offer, by donating a new hope, a light of love and tenderness, and showing God’s caress on humankind’s wounds.
Every single offer is result of individual moments of hope and intimate dialogue. However, here in Pompeii, it becomes a universal voice, dressed with communion, sharing, spiritual fusion, chorus chant which goes beyond the walls, space, stops time in a collective and universal supplication.

POMPEI ( Pompeii - Italy ) - PONTIFICIO SANTUARIO DELLA BEATA VERGINE DEL SANTO ROSARIO DI POMPEI -

Visiting the Ruins of Pompeii, Italy Travel Guide Transcript:
While many travellers visit Pompeii on a day trip, we chose to base ourselves here for a few days. The main draw, of course, were the ruins of Pompeii, an ancient Roman city that was buried under ash and pumice when Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. We spent half a day walking through the world's largest excavation and archaeological site, and what follows it our mini travel guide.
Our first stop inside the complex was the Amphitheatre of Pompeii. Built around 70 BC, this is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre to have been built of stone; for comparison the Colosseum in Rome wouldn’t come into existence for another century. We toured the grounds and also checked out the music exhibit on site, because it turns out a lot of bands have played here over the years!
After visiting the amphitheatre which is on the very east end, we started making our way into the city. The streets were cobbled and all along there were rows of houses and villas, many of them with impressive frescoes that tell the tale of a wealthy city with lavish homes.
One of the reasons Pompeii is so well preserved is because it was buried quickly by volcanic ash and pumice, plus the lack of air and moisture also allowed for the buried artifacts to be extremely well preserved. Stepping into the homes is like stepping into the past; you can still see the elaborate mosaic floors and vibrant frescoes frozen in time.
Continuing our walk through Pompeii, we eventually reached the Forum. This square would have been the centre of life for locals with temples, municipal buildings, and markets. The statue of the centaur, half-man half-horse, is a focal point, as is the view of Mount Vesuvius looking down on the ruins.
To finish off our visit of Pompeii, we walked along the southern edge of the ruined city where we saw the casts of the victims of Vesuvius. When archaeological teams began excavating Pompeii, they noticed there were large voids in the compacted ash whenever they were digging around bones. By pouring plaster into the spaces, they were able to capture the final poses of the residents’ last moments in the city.
One of the best discoveries of our time in Pompeii was Pizzeria Alleria, we stumbled here soaking wet on our first night in the city and we just couldn’t stay away after that. Here’s what the fuss is all about.
After that, we ended up getting a second Margherita pizza - the first one was just too tasty! - and then we also ordered the Nutella cheesecake, which was just as decadent as it looks.
We started our do-it-yourself tour of modern Pompei at Piazza Bartolo Longo, a beautiful plaza lined with palm trees right in the heart of the city. Standing in the square, it’s impossible to miss the Shrine of the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei, where once you step you are greeted with painted domes and golden ceilings. And then from there, we went to the top of the bell tower for a 360-degree views of the city.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.
