[Japan] Tribute to Dr. Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold
This video tries to show u the life's story of Dr. Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold, a Bavarian/German noble origin who came to Japan in 1823... in the Edo period of Japan. At the time, Japan traded only with Dutch through an artificial island called, De.ji.ma.
From this story though, one can see that there were non-Dutch people trying to enter Japan no matter what the cost. In Japan, Siebold's story is well known but he is described as Dutch.
It is truly amazing to learn that Samurais spoke fluent Dutch and detected that Philipp was not Dutch. Philipp's daughter, Ine, was also fluent in Dutch but Philipp spoke Japanese with his family in Japan.
It is also amazing to learn that Philipp was actually from a long line of Bavarian noble origin and his family as well as extended families are extremely well-to-do, producing the first female medical doctor in not only Germany but also Japan.
While in Japan, Philipp actually had two children, Ine with Taki and another child. Ine is very well known but another child... no one knows what happened to this person. The child was born when Philipp was in the 60s and the mother was a Japanese woman who worked as a maid in Dejima...so it is said.
In any rate, it is indeed a fascinating story of Japanese history.
Enjoy and many thanks for watching... ; D

[Japan] Tribute to Sir. Thomas Blake Glover of Nagasaki
This video tries to show u who Sir. Thomas Blake Glover and his family were, based on the information available to me. Glover was sent to Japan at the time when Japan was changing drastically due to the outside pressure, mainly America/Commodore Perry, who came to Japan in 1853. Because of Perry, the people of Japan realized that they needed to readjust the position of their country in the world. The people of Japan were spread into pro-Bakufu/no change vs. anti-Bakuru/yes change..., struggling to find the way to Westernize/modernize the country.
In Scotland, Sir. Glover is called a Scottish Samurai; however, as in European countries, in Japan people of a merchant-class would never have become a Samurai (a Knight). In any rate, young Glover's association with Ryoma Sakamoto, Tosa Bushi, was simply an amazing encounter for it really changed the history of Japan/the world. And, if young Glover never had met Ryoma, perhaps Meiji Restoration would have been much challenging to complete. Two of the most powerful characters of the time... together shifted the paradigm of the world for good.

Dokei Trailer by Dutch Courage Productions
Dōkei is a Theatre Play by Jung Sun den Hollander. Through Taki Kusumoto's eyes and words we are transported back to the Nagasaki of 1865 and beyond. Taki, the mistress of Japan's renowned western physician, Dr Phillip Von Siebold, is unable to let go of the past. Their unconventional and passionate relationship ended abruptly when Siebold was banned from Japan for life on charges of being a spy, in what became known as the 'Siebold incident' leaving Taki and their young daughter behind. There is no regret or pity in its depiction of Taki's memories and sacrifice for her first love but lays bare the poignancy of longing for love and happiness.

Nagasaki (長崎市 Nagasaki-shi?) ● Begin Japanoloy ● Ep 8 【 JAPAN DOCUMENTARY 2016】
Nagasaki (長崎市 Nagasaki-shi?) (About this sound listen (help·info)) is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan. It became a center of Portuguese and other European influence in the 16th through 19th centuries, and the Churches and Christian Sites in Nagasaki have been proposed for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Part of Nagasaki was home to a major Imperial Japanese Navy base during the First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. Its name means long cape.
During World War II, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made Nagasaki the second and, to date, last city in the world to experience a nuclear attack.[1]
As of January 1, 2009, the city has an estimated population of 446,007 and a population density of 1,100 persons per km². The total area is 406.35 km².

During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Shogunate Government of Edo (now Tokyo) were implementing and dealing commerce only with Holland at Dejima harbor (a small island in Nagasaki Japan) . Philipp Franz von Siebold who was a German, employed as a medical doctor at the Office of the Dutch in Dejima. He took back two stuffed bodies of the Japanese Green Pigeon to the Western society and registered Siebold's Pigeon as the scientific name. Because the pronunciation of his Dutch was with a German accent, he was suspected to be a spy by Japanese interpreters.
Finally, he took out a detailed map of Hokkaido including Sakhalin and some islands of the Chishima Islands chain. The Russian Empire obtained these maps and began the invasion policy of going south in the Far East. Now we have a major territory problem with Russia.
