MUSEUM OF MODERN ART BUILDINGS FOR BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT EXHIBITION 1957 62794
This film (likely hosted by Arthur Drexler) chronicles the Buildings for Business and Government exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, February 27-April 28, 1957.
Original press release text: Six buildings commissioned by business and government will be shown at the Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53 Street, from February 26 through May 5 in an exhibition demonstrating the important role a new kind of patronage is playing in the current building program that is changing the face of our country and the face it presents abroad. Actual sections of walls of glazed brick, pierced tile, glass and aluminum, a suspended ceiling of aluminum discs and granite paving have been built in the Museum's galleries to show visitors the fine materials used in these buildings. Large models are accompanied by photographic murals to show the individual character of each building as fully as possible. Selected by Arthur Drexler, Director of the Museum's Department of Architecture and Design, Buildings for Business and Government illustrates a range of contemporary architectural problems and possibilities. The General Motors Technical Center in Detroit, designed by Eero Saarinen and Associates, and the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill are large, complex projects composed of several buildings on three and four hundred acre sites. The Seagram Building at 375 Park Avenue by Mies van der Rone and Philip C. Johnson, and the Chase Manhattan Bank building in the Wall Street area by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are being built in two of the most famous and crowded areas in the world, where space is the most valuable commodity. The St. Louis Air Terminal by Holimuth, Yamasaki and Leinweber must fit today's needs and yet be easily expanded for tomorrow's traffic and population. The US Embassy in New Delhi by Edward Stone is an example of the excellent work being done abroad by the government where architecture is an important representative of America. Mr. Drexler says: Business and government alike are rediscovering the rewards of fine building,
and the results can be seen not only in individual works of great beauty but in a generally higher standard of excellence....The United States no longer demands that major government commissions be executed in antique styles. Embassies being built abroad by the State Department, as part of a program which began in 1956, and the new Academy for the United States Air Force, look like what they are: modern American buildings. Business organizations are now undertaking building programs that deliberately exceed strict utilitarian limits. Happily our buildings are beginning to benefit from the attention to material, craftsmanship, and detail lavished on the
automobile and other industrial products. Today's most valuable material, however, is space. In the present condition of our cities the use to which land is put is a decisive factor in architectural quality. Releasing part of a site so that it may be used as open space allows light and air to penetrate narrow streets, and makes it possible to see the buildings--a consideration of some importance if we are to have architecture at all. The concern with esthetic and social values shown by government and business through these buildings is not in itself new. It denotes rather a shift in emphasis clients are becoming patrons.

Beautiful Brooklyn:
Brooklyn used to be a city by itself. It became part of NY over 100 years ago. Brooklyn has many interesting and sites. Just go over a bridge, take a bus or subway and you are there.
Street Art in New York:
Street art can be drawings on paper that have been wheat-pasted onto the side of a building; images stenciled right onto walls; sculptures screwed onto a stop sign pole; even tiles arranged to form 1980s video game aliens, which the French street artist, Space Invader, put up dozens of during a recent visit to the city. Did you notice? Thought not.
But a well-planned walk with a trained eye through neighborhoods like Chelsea, SoHo and the Lower East Side in Manhattan, and Williamsburg and Dumbo — especially near the waterfront — in Brooklyn can change that.
You can also load a Google map marked with Brooklyn and Manhattan hot spots (on Streetsy's About page). Dedicated students can move on to Flickr, the photo-sharing site, where searches for specific artists yield oodles of examples.
The Tree Museum:
Brilliant creations by artist Katie Holten who has tagged over 100 trees along the Grand Concourse — each with an accompanying audiocast by Bronxites who live(d) along or near the Concourse speaking their thoughts of the grand boulevard. Trees in the museum can be identified by a marker on the sidewalk bearing a phone # to call to hear the audiocast. Maps available at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. The Tree Museum was scheduled to close October 12th, but will remain open until January 3rd, 2010.
New York was founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1624. The settlement was called New Amsterdam until 1664 when the colony came under English control.[7] New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York City, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.
Many districts and landmarks in the city have become well known to outsiders. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Times Square, iconified as The Crossroads of the World, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theater district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections.
Bill Powers, New York Gallery Owner:
China Chow, host and judge, lends her artistic grace to the second season of Bravo's cutting-edge competition that brings fine art dialogue to the forefront of pop culture. Returning to the judging panel is Bill Powers, a New York Gallery owner and literary art contributor, as well as Jerry Saltz, senior art critic for New York Magazine. World-renowned art auctioneer Simon de Pury adds his voice of expertise as a mentor to the contestants.
The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibition:
A twice-a-year happening every Memorial Day Weekend and the weekend that follows and every Labor Day Weekend and the weekend that follows that. The event showcases fine artists and craft artisans from around the New York metropolitan area, the nation and the world. Attendees come from all over and are a cosmopolitan mix, including art lovers, tourists, faculty and students from the area's many schools and professionals such as interior designers.
Selling Art on the Streets of New York:
What do I do if my art is ever confiscated by the police?
If the police ever confiscate your art or art display for violating
vending laws it is crucial that you get a voucher from them describing
in detail whatever they took. By law, you can get everything back
within 24 hours at the precinct it was taken to regardless of the
outcome of your summons case.

Hi everyone, Im Abraham Lincoln and i love my country even being dead. Thats why i want to talk you about the beautiful recent cities in the United States. Actually im going to talk just about New york city because i thing it represents well the United States customs of our days or i have to say your days because they are not mine anymore.
Ok lets see. New York is a very important city in the world, it is a leading global city in several aspects. It exerts a powerful influence over worldwide commerce, finance, culture, fashion and entertainment.
The city consist of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, queens and Staten Island.
The city has a particular weather. Generally the summers are typically hot and humid with average high temperatures (26 - 29 C) and lows (17-21 C), winters are cold, the temperature of the coldest month is 0 centigrade degrees. However temperatures in winter could for few days be really really low it is around -12 to -6 centigrade degrees. Spring and autumn are erratic, and could range from chilly to warm, although they are usually pleasantly mild with low humidity.
Culture. The culture of New York is shaped by centuries of immigration, the city's size and variety, and its state as the cultural capital of the United States.
Many major American culture movement first emerged in the city. Some of these movement are:
Harlem Renaissance.
Modern dance.
The city was the epicenter of jazz.
Abstract expressionism.
Indie Rock.
And the birthplace of hip hop, punk rock and the beat generation.
Food. The food of New York has a great variety as consequence of immigration, But in the food identified with New York city origins we can find:
Hot dogs
Manhattan clam chowder
New York style cheesecake
New York style pizza
New York style baqel
New York style pastromi
Baked pretzels and others.
People. Talking about the people we have to say they are very focused. Like i said this city has a lot of people living there so they need to be organized to arrive always at time. Thats their policy.
The universities in New York have a great level, their investigations use high technology and the government really reward the academical performance that could be one of the biggest reasons that explain the quality of the New York education, or in general the United States education. That is a fault in your country Colombia.
Finally if someday you visit New York city in addition of everything i have been saying, you can find beautiful spots to know and to enjoy with your facility.
Spots to know like.
Brooklyn bridge
Central Park
China Town
The museum of modern art. Well-known like m.o.m.a.
The beautiful Hudson river
and the times square.
I hope you have enjoyed this little overview and i really hope you go to know New York.
Good bye English iv from National University
