Hiking Gillette Castle State Park - East Haddam, CT
Our hike begins at the castle to enjoy the scenic view overlooking the Connecticut River and the towns of Deep River and Chester. After, we descend to riverbank and enjoy the small beach areas near the ferry landing.
Upon returning to the top, we conclude the day by hiking the Railroad Trail and some unglazed trails that return to the riverbank.
Gillette Castle was constructed atop the Seven Sisters hill chain in East Haddam by William Gillette in 1919. In 1943, the property was purchased by the State of Connecticut and has since become a beautiful state park that highlights the scenic Connecticut River Valley.

On this adventure we headed east in Connecticut towards the Connecticut River. At the time we knew very little about the location we were heading to, but when all the images of the park centered around a castle, we knew we wouldn't be disappointed. Gillette Caste State Park is a very unique park that revolves around an American actor-manager, playwright, and stage-manager's past. If you head there in present time however, the castle feels very much alive.

Gillette Castle was originally a private residence commissioned and designed by William Gillette, an American actor who is most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on stage.
Gillette died having no children, and his will precluded the possession of his home by any blithering sap-head who has no conception of where he is or with what surrounded. The State of Connecticut took over the property in 1943, renaming it Gillette Castle State Park. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Gillette designed the castle and most of its contents personally. The woodwork within the castle is hand-hewn southern white oak. Of the forty-seven doors within the structure, there are no two exactly the same. Both the interior and exterior of the castle point to Gillette's creative genius.
Gillette attended classes at numerous colleges including Trinity, Yale, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and College of the City of New York, but never received a degree.
Besides his activities as an actor and playwright, Gillette is known to have written two novels, invented many trick stage props and lighting techniques, and often produced and directed the plays in which he appeared. After his semi-retirement in 1910, Gillette was welcomed by theatergoers countless times during his four revival tours. His last performance was at the Bushnell in Hartford in 1936, the year before his death.
