Kim Jong Un Tours North Korea Ski Resort
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended the year by visiting the opening of the country's multimillion-Pound Masik Pass Ski Resort.
Kim, who can be seen touring the resort in these photos, reportedly enjoyed skiing as a teenager studying in Switzerland, and this resort in Wonsan has long been a pet project of his.
The project has also been carried out in rivalry with South Korea, where Pyeongchang will host the 2018 Winter Olympics. North Korea's Olympic committee has gone as far as to suggest the resort could share some of the events with its neighbour.
Kim Jong Un assumed power in December 2011, after the death of his father Kim Jong-Il. Earlier this year the country's continued testing of nuclear weapons raised tensions with South Korea, and in recent months he has had both his former girlfriend and high-ranking uncle executed.

North Korean students took part in a ski camp at a luxury ski resort in Wonsan, located in the country's east.

It's very interesting. I will do my best to learn how to ski and I want to show my skiing skills to the dear respected marshal Kim Jong Un, said North Korean primary student Ri Chong Hae.
It's really like a dream. All I do is study hard, but I have had the love from the marshal every step and every time. So I have a firm pledge to pay back for the love of the dear marshal, said Kim Il Sung University student Sin Kum Song.
The ski resort opened on December 31.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who studied in the Swiss capital Bern is believed to have enjoyed skiing in the Alps. He has had work done on the Masik Pass ski project since last year, competing with South Korea which is hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics.
In August, Switzerland halted the sale of equipment for a ski resort and luxury sporting goods including golf, horseback riding and water sports to the North under the sanctions.
The North Korea's Skiers Association had said in a statement carried by KCNA news agency that countries should not prohibit Pyongyang from buying equipment which is not for producing rockets or nuclear weapons.

The organizing committee for the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea's Pyeongchang (POCOG) has poured cold water on North Korea's suggestion that it could co-host some of the Olympic skiing events at its Masik resort.
North Korea's International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Chang Ung hinted in September that the North was willing to host events at the resort in Wonsan, Gangwon province. However, POCOG responded by saying that holding events hundreds of kilometres away from the host city was unrealistic and would breach IOC regulations.
In August, Switzerland halted the sale to the North of equipment for a ski resort and luxury sporting goods including golf, horseback riding and water sports under the sanctions.
North Korea reportedly asked several Swiss companies to provide chair lifts and cable cars worth 7 million Swiss francs ($7.24 million) for its grand Masik resort.

Wonsan
Wŏnsan is a port city and naval base located in Kangwon Province, North Korea, on the westernmost shore of the Sea of Japan (East Korean Sea) and the provincial capital. The port was opened by occupying Japanese forces in 1880. Before the Korean War (1950–1953), it fell within the jurisdiction of the then South Hamgyong Province, and during that war, it was the location of the Blockade of Wonsan. The population of the city was estimated at 331,000 in 2000. Notable people from Wŏnsan include Kim Ki Nam, diplomat and Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party. Economically, the city is home to several major factories.
In 2013, it was announced that Wonsan will be converted into a summer destination with resorts and entertainment.

Choe Ryong Hae, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army (KPA), addressed the ceremony.
The ski resort is a valuable fruition of the deep loving care shown by the great WPK for the people to enable them enjoy luxury and comfort under socialism, the speaker noted, and continued:
In hearty response to the appeal of Marshal Kim Jong Un, service personnel of the KPA explored a huge mountain area, successfully creating 10 ski courses, and completed the construction of nearly 60 structures by carrying out projects at a lightning speed. By doing so they have proved that the DPRK does whatever the supreme commander is determined to do.
The country will never forget the exploits performed by the heroic builders and genuine patriots who created new historical terms Speed on Masik Pass by successfully finishing in a short span of time the construction that would take others more than 10 years to do, true to the noble intention of Kim Jong Un, who loves his people so much, and his outstanding leadership.

Soldier-builders and young people who will play skiing at the resort cut the tape.
At the end of the ceremony the participants looked round various places of the resort. -0-
