About Epsom College
Founded in 1855, and located 15 miles from central London, Epsom College is situated in 84 acres of parkland estate close to Epsom Downs. Epsom is one of the most successful co-educational boarding and day schools in the world for 13–18 year olds.
Pastoral care
With over 380 boarders, boarding is pivotal to life at the College. Campus life revolves around the close-knit house system to ensure that pupils receive the necessary care, support and guidance in a thriving and happy community.
Facilities
As expected, facilities at Epsom College are first-class; more than 50 well-resourced classrooms are grouped by department, each with its own dedicated information technology and specialist resource base. Over 25,000 books, newspapers and periodicals are contained within a stunning modern library. Recent construction of a fully equipped fitness suite, a new dance studio and a second drama studio has taken the College’s appeal to a new stratosphere.
Curriculum
There is a varied and balanced range of subjects in the Lower School, including three modern languages and separate sciences for all. IGCSE examinations are sat in the core subjects. Over 300 pupils make up the sixth-form, where there is a huge choice of subject combinations to meet the requirements of generalists as well as keen specialists. The sixth-form curriculum is comprised of A-level, Pre-U, Extended Project and Critical Thinking modules. The vast majority of leavers progress to top universities, especially research-led institutions.
Co-curricular affairs
The co-curricular programme is best summarised as ‘Challenge and opportunity for everyone’. Top-class coaching and a culture of maximum effort from all pupils enables Epsom to encourage all participants, regardless of talent, to enjoy and succeed in their chosen sports and activities. Art, drama, music and sport are the first choices, with national and international representation in netball, rugby, cricket, hockey and target rifle shooting.
“Epsom College provides the confidence and scope for every child to excel in academic and co-curricular pursuits, whilst being supported by outstanding pastoral care.”

The British Rail (BR) Class 50 is a diesel locomotive built from 1967-68 by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry Works in Newton-le-Willows. Fifty of these locomotives were built to haul express passenger trains on the, then non-electrified, section of the West Coast Main Line between Crewe, Carlisle and Scotland. They were originally hired from English Electric Leasing, not being purchased outright by BR until around 1973. Before gaining their 50xxx TOPS numbers these locomotives were known as English Electric Type 4s. The class were nicknamed Hoovers (sometimes shortened to Vacs) by rail enthusiasts because of the distinctive sound made by the inertial air-filters originally fitted. These proved unreliable, and were removed during mid-life refurbishment, but the Hoover nickname stuck.
The class were built for working passenger services on the West Coast Main Line (WCML) north of Crewe, to Preston, Lancaster, Carlisle and Glasgow Central. Services south of Crewe would generally be worked by an electric locomotive, with the Class 50s taking over for the journeys that continued north. Trains were often double-headed to deal with the steep gradients, such as Shap Summit and Beattock Summit.
In the late-1970s following the earlier withdrawal of the Warships, BR decided to continue this naming policy, and as a result the Class 50 fleet were all named after Royal Navy warships.
Class 50 locomotives proved popular with rail enthusiasts, with eighteen locomotives saved for preservation and several subsequently registered for use on the mainline.

LYRICS:
The French Brexit song
Oh England, you broke our heart
When you first voted to depart
But before you off and pack, one thing
We want our language back
Oh England, you went your way
But for this exit you will pay
Without French letters you’ll be lost
It’s time for you to count la cost
No you can’t have joie de vivre without le français
You’ll lose yourself without our cul-de-sac
There is no fizz without champagne
Though you can gladly keep your rain
We’re taking all our French words back
No, you cannot drive a car without a chauffeur
There’s no déjà-vu without déjà vu
What’s sex without its lingerie?
Piers Morgan without his toupée
We really feel miserable for you
Oh England, you’re such a fool
Did they teach you nothing at school
With politics you’ve been risqué
For Brexit is just an entrée
Yes England, this is the start
Of picking allies à la carte
Soon the whole world will turn on you
It isn’t nice, but it is true
Cause you cannot rendez-vous without le francais
So many things that you will sorely miss
Like etiquette and ambulance
Without us you don’t stand a chance
You’ll die without our life saving French kiss
Key change!
No you can’t have marriage without fiancé
Without us your soufflé will never rise
Don’t bother to RSVP
We’ve buggered off for après ski
You didn’t get an invite, quelle surprise
Your cheeseboard will be blue without
Roquefort and camembert
When you can’t find the menu
You won't, because it isn’t there
When you smell of faint regret
Instead of fine eau de cologne
You only have yourselves to blame
For dining all alone
No you can’t eat à la mode without le francais
You’ll have to scoff it all off one big plate
Alas there will be no encore
Now that you’ve bolted your back door
For a referendum you will have to wait
And if you want our bel esprit
I’m sorry darling, c’est la vie
You should have voted stay, it is too late
Yes, you should have voted stay it is too late

Jo Swinson appears to be 'Marmite candidate' in her East Dunbartonshire seat - if no one loved Marmi
In her parliamentary constituency Jo Swinson appears to be living up to her reputation as the “Marmite candidate” – if no one loved Marmite. The forthcoming election will be the ultimate test of the Liberal Democrat leader’s theory you don’t have to be popular to succeed in politics. An Ipsos Mori poll published on Wednesday showed 50 per cent of the electorate were “unfavourable” towards Swinson and the more they see of her, the less they like her. In her East Dunbartonshire constituency, there is a simmering resentment that she has prioritised her prime ministerial ambitions over the needs of the community. Polls show she now has a lead of only four per cent over the SNP and her zeal for the top job may well see her voted out. The nationalists are hoping to wrestle the seat back from Swinson, who won it from the SNP’s John Nicolson in 2017 with a 5339 majority, Some voters now feel she is more elusive in her constituency than the endangered hedgehogs she lamented on the climate debate. Her failure to show up last month at a hustings in the local baptist church in Kirkintilloch led to her being dubbed the pop-up MP by her rival, SNP candidate Amy Callaghan. “She ran from scrutiny”, said accountant graduate James Mills, 27, who like Swinson has grown up in East Dunbartonshire’s Milngavie. “There were people there who wanted to grill her, to ask her about serious concerns, like the austerity measures she voted for in the Lib Dems’ coalition with the Tories . “Jo Swinson is pretty awful. She didn’t care at all when she was voting with the Tories to slash welfare benefits . She is focused on Westminster and her own agenda, not on her constituency. She has set her sights high but that career over principle approach will bring her crashing down. She says Boris is all about Boris but it is also true that Jo is all about Jo.” James will vote for Callaghan, who he believes when she says “I want to be on the ground, in the constituency, where people can look me in the eye and I can deal with what matters to them.” Another sore point has been Swinson’s enthusiastic affirmative when asked on TV whether she would press the nuclear button if she was PM. Her unwavering response has gone down like radiation sickness in an area well within the fallout of any potential accident or attack at the Faslane nuclear base housing the £200billion deadweight of Trident . Her casual regard for mass murder put the tin hat on any a celebrity endorsement from local girl and singer Amy MacDonald . She tweeted: “Swinson has been my MP for pretty much my entire voting life. She has been a charlatan the entire time. “It took her one second to say that she’d happily drop nuclear weapons. Imagine voting for her.” Retired post office worker, George McLean, 72, cites the SNP’s anti-nuclear policy as one reason he will be voting for the party this election. He said:”For me it’s not about personalities and kissing babies and all about polici

This U.K. Whistleblower Almost Stopped the Iraq Invasion. A New Film Tells Her Story
In 2003, Katharine Gun, a young specialist working for Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters, exposed a highly confidential memo that revealed the United States’ collaboration with Britain in collecting sensitive information on United Nations Security Council members in order to pressure them into supporting the Iraq invasion. Gun leaked the memo to the press, setting off a chain of events that jeopardized her freedom and safety, but also opened the door to putting the entire legality of the Iraq invasion on trial. Acclaimed Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg described Gun’s action as “the most important and courageous leak I have ever seen.” Gun’s incredible story is depicted in the new film “Official Secrets,” which premieres in the U.S. August 30. We speak with Katharine Gun; the British journalists who reported on Gun’s revelations in The Observer newspaper, Martin Bright and Ed Vulliamy; and Gavin Hood, director of “Official Secrets.”
