I am out walking with Nick Tann, songwriter and performer in Winchester in Hampshire. He wanted to take me to look at the Hospital of St Cross and the beautiful alms houses attached. We also saw the British White Cattle that gaze in the fields surrounding the hospital.

Hospital of St Cross (near Winchester, UK)
850 year old Almshouse of Noble Poverty, near Winchester. This is a hospital in the sense of offering hospitality, rather than medical care. It continues a tradition of offering alms in the form of the wayfarer's dole - a beaker of ale and chunk of bread.

The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty is a medieval almshouse in Winchester, Hampshire, England, founded between 1132 and 1136. Hospital of St Cross is the oldest charitable institution in the United Kingdom. The founder was Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, grandson of William the Conqueror and younger brother to King Stephen of England.
Hospital of St Cross is also the largest medieval almshouse in Britain: Hospital of St Cross is built on the scale of an Oxford or Cambridge college, although it is older than any of the colleges at those universities. Hospital of St Cross has been described as England's oldest and most perfect almshouse. Most of the buildings and grounds are open to the public at certain times.
Hospital of St Cross still provides accommodation for a total of 25 elderly men, known as The Brothers, under the care of The Master. They belong to either of two charitable foundations: those belonging to the Order of the Hospital of St Cross (founded around 1132) wear black trencher hats and black robes with a silver badge in the shape of a Jerusalem cross, while those belonging to the Order of Noble Poverty (founded in 1445) wear claret trencher hats and claret robes with a silver cardinal’s badge in memory of Cardinal Beaufort.

It was founded by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, grandson of William the Conqueror and younger brother to King Stephen in 1136.

April 6, 2018 we re-visited one of the oldest Almshouse in England. The Hospital was founded in the 1130s by Henri of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, grandson of William the Conqueror and brother of King Stephen. The purpose of the hospital was to provide accommodation for 13 poor men, feeble and so reduced in strength that they can scarcely, or not at all support themselves without other aid.

Legend has it that the Hospital’s foundation originated in a walk that Henry of Blois, a grandson of William the Conqueror, took in the Itchen Meadows. He was supposedly stopped by a young peasant girl who begged Henry to help her people, who were starving because of the civil war. The parallel with the Virgin Mary was not lost on Henry, who was so moved by the girl’s plight that when, a little further along the river, he discovered the ruins of a religious house, he resolved to use the site to establish a new community to help the poor. How much of this is fact is unclear, but we do know that Henry of Blois was young, wealthy and powerful: a monk, knight and politician in one. Appointed Bishop of Winchester in 1129 at the age of 28, he founded the Hospital of St Cross between 1132 and 1136, creating what is said to be England’s oldest charitable institution.
The Hospital was founded to support thirteen poor men, so frail that they were unable to work, and to feed one hundred men at the gates each day. The thirteen men became the Brothers of St Cross. Then, as now, they were not monks. St Cross is not a monastery but a secular foundation. Medieval St Cross was endowed with land, mills and farms, providing food and drink for a large number of people. However the water was unfit for drinking so copious amounts of ale and beer were needed.
In the fifteenth century, Cardinal Beaufort created the Order of Noble Poverty, adding the Almshouse to the existing Hospital buildings and giving St Cross the look that it has today. His image appears on the Beaufort Tower.

St Cross Symondians Cricket Club is one of the largest in the county of Hampshire in England. The club fields five senior men's sides on Saturdays and it also has two senior women's sections and three girls' teams. There are also other weekend and midweek fixtures.

The nearby Hospital of St Cross after which the club is named was founded between 1132 and 1136 AD. Legend has it that the founder, Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester at the time, was walking in the water meadows along the banks of the River Itchen.
He was met by a peasant girl who begged him to help her people who were starving due to the civil war.
It is said the Henry of Blois was very moved and as he continued his walk he saw the ruins of a religious house nearby.
The identify of the former religious house is unknown but it suggests that the location is the site of over a thousand years of continuous worship.
With the girl's story at the forefront of his mind he resolved to build a new community that would be devoted to helping the poor.
When the Hospital or St Cross Almshouse was complete it housed thirteen frail men who were unable to earn a living themselves. At the gates it each it also gave free food and drink to another one hundred men.
The Brothers of St Cross are the thirteen men housed therein. They are not monks and the Hospital is still a secular charity.
Henry of Blois, grandson of William the Conqueror, must have been quite a character. He was a monk, knight, and politician all rolled into one.
Over time the Hospital was given land, farms, and mills from which it could harvest food and drink for much larger numbers of people.
However, as was common practice before improved sanitation and knowledge of water-borne bacteria, beers and ales were consumed instead of water.
