My Favourite Cycle routes - The Two Tunnels Greenway - Bath
This shared-use path re-uses what was the most characterful part of one of the UK's most famous railways - The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway - as it burrowed beneath Combe Down - the high ground south of the city of Bath.
This is a dramatic and accessible route leading south from the city - and available to cyclists, wheelchair users and walkers.
The route follows the disused railway trackbed of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway from the Bath suburb of East Twerton, through the linear park of Oldfield Park to the Devonshire Tunnel.
Travelling in a Southerly direction the Two Tunnels Greenway passes through the 447 yard Devonshire tunnel before emerging into Lyncombe Vale before entering the 1 mile and 69 yard long Combe Down Tunnel. On exiting the Combe Down tunnel the Greenway continues over the Tucking Mill Viaduct and onwards to Midford and the Midford Viaduct.
Shortly after crossing the Tucking Mill Viaduct NCN Route 244 ends to become NCN Route 24. At this point, (just before the path goes under the Tucking Mill Lane Railway bridge), the exit to NCN Route 24 (North-East towards Monkton Combe and the Dundas Wharf & Aquaduct) is on the left. Continue South to remain on NCN Route 24 towards Midford, Midford Viaduct and on to Wellow and Radstock.
I'm told that the Hope and Anchor Pub is worth a visit - adjacent to, and signposted from NCN Route 24 at the Midford Viaduct.
The Devonshire tunnel is 447 yards long and the Combe Down tunnel over 1 mile long. Both tunnels are lit along their full lengths and the surface of the Greenway is very good (smooth tarmac) until the Midford Viaduct. Surface quality easily seen on the video.
We parked at the Newbridge park and ride and semi-deliberately didn't pick the easiest way to get ourselves onto NCN Route 4 (The Bristol & Bath Railway Path) because we're intending to ride to Bristol and the Avon Gorge from this starting point and wanted to see what all the access points are like. In my opinion the entry and exit points *we used* for NCN Route 4 are neither easy or safe.
My advice is: If you start a ride/walk/run at Newbridge, (regardless of which direction along NCN Route 4 you're going), TURN LEFT out of Newbridge park and ride and make your way to Brassmill Lane and access NCN Route 4 there. The start of the Bristol & Bath Railway Path is clearly marked and signposted in Brassmill Lane, as are directions towards the Two Tunnels Greenway Route (NCN Route 244).
At all points from Brassmill Lane to the Midford Viaduct the surface is good quality tarmac suitable for riding, walking, wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility scooters. I'd recommend a full charge on anything battery powered.
We had a fantastic afternoon, turning around a couple of miles South of the Midford Viaduct and then leaving NCN Route 244 just South of Midford, turning East to join NCN Route 24 to the Dundas Aquaduct where we enjoyed our lunch. We'd ridden through the Dundas Aquaduct on our Trowbridge to Bath ride ( and wanted to visit it again and approach it via teh Somerset Coal Canal (On NCN Route 24).
On leaving the Dundas Aquaduct we joined NCN Route 4 to ride back into Bath alongside the Kennet & Avon Canal.
The last 3 or 4 miles on the video shows us leaving NCN Route 4 to ride through Georgian Bath, (very little traffic on a Sunday), across Pulteney Bridge and alongside the Grand Parade before rejoining the River Avon (and NCN Route 4) for the final blat along the Bristol & Bath Railway path to the steps I'd high lighted near the start of the video.
Video is about 51 minutes long with many parts of it accelerated.
Comments & suggestions welcome :)

PLACES TO GO IN LONDON - NORTH GREENWICH - SOHO LONDON - NOTTING HILL
What are some places to go in London you ask? We're visiting London and the plan is to walk from Canary Wharf to Imperial Wharf but that's just insanity and end up in North Greenwich and Soho London before heading to Notting Hill for drinks; all good places to go in London!
Whether it's your first time in London or you've been here many, here there are endless places to go in London, take the tube somewhere and go for a long walk stopping in at points of interest, London is happening so if you visit London, get involved as lots of places in London to have a fun time.
Instead of our original plan we end up near Canary Wharf then head to North Greenwich to meet up with my friend Paul before heading to Soho for drinks followed by Notting Hill for even more. Ahh London, endless places to go in London. what a special place to pass some time. Ahh, visiting London is good times. We eat some Vietnamese food and head to a few London pubs. Let's just say lots of places in London to have a pint, endless really.
Getting around London on foot is one of my favourite transportation London options, of course the tube is close second and probably needed in every serious mission visiting London 2017. So it's not what to do in London but what places to go in London.

Streamside Walk floodplain ruined
Streamside Walk has been devastated by council maintenance. I first noticed it over a week ago. Near where the stream, which rises in Vilner, flows into the stream, which passes through Morton, the council has dredged the former stream and lopped three nearby pollarded willows.
The dredged area is a floodplain, where the stream broadens out into three main channels, but the whole area can get submerged following a heavy downpour. Following the dredging the whole area has been largely devegetated, and the two strip islands between the water channels are just thin banks of mud. The dredged material has been dumped on the bank between the stream and the main footpath, and is a long mound of mud, stones and refuse. Alongside the mound is a line of traffic cones, at least one of which has been removed and is in the water downstream from the floodplain. To say that the area is now ugly would be an understatement. Furthermore, following the devegetation, there is now serious potential for erosion - of the strip islands, of the stream bank, and of the mound.
The pollarded willows are historic trees, and, as far as I know, pollarding (which was the process of cutting new shoots annually to make wicker products) had ceased. Instead of three interesting looking trees, there are now three ugly monoliths. The three historic pollarded willows upstream, near Gloucester Road, have been left alone.
The Streamside Walk linear park is an area of natural beauty, and the floodplain area was one of the most attractive stretches. It is now a scene of devastation.
The linear park is maintained jointly by Thornbury Town Council and South Gloucestershire Council. I doubt that the town council had the resources to do this. I have sent Freedom of Information requests about the dredging and the lopping to South Gloucestershire Council.

Ten Trinity Square
Overlooking the Tower of London, Ten Trinity Square is an historic emblem of the capital’s once thriving trade toutes along the Thames. Harking back to a time when shipping was the main mode of cargo transporation and London’s Royal Docks were the largest in the world. Ten Trinity Square was designed by Sir Edwin Cooper as the prestigious headquarters for the recently formed Port of London Authority, set up to ensure navigational safety. Officially opened in 1922 by Prome Minister David Lloyde George, two decades later the celebrated building even hosted the reception for the inaugral meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1946. Now in its new guise as a five-star Four Seasons hotel, complete with forty-one fully serviced hapartments ranging from one to five bedrooms. The hotel has two restaurants, French and Asian, a Grand Lobby bar, a spa and a private members club so whether you choose to live here, lay your hat for a night or two or enjoy a G&T in the impressive Rotunda, you can marvel at its grandeur and become part of its exciting new chapter.
Acquired by Reignwood Group, a global Chinese enterprise, the neo-classical architectural gem even made an appearance in the 2012 James Bond blockbuster Skyfall.
Designed in the Beaux Arst style, the building has undergone extensive restoration by international architects, Aukett Swanke, heritage building specialists, Donald Insall Associates and a team of award-winning interior designers which inlcudes Martin Kemp of Martin Kemp Design. Kemp studied fine decorative art at the @’Ecole des Beaux Art Decoratif in Strasbourg and cut his teeth working with interior design Grande Dame, Barbara Barry in Los Angeles on homes for Hollywood’s rich and famous. Headhunted by Candy & Candy, he returned to the UK to work on their extravagent Belle Epoque project in Monaco and One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge. Whilst there he became Creative Director and stayed for eight years before setting up his own design studio in 2012.
Throughout the building the key architectural features khave been painstakingly restored, including the magnificent Corinthian columns, the handcrafted Art Deco ceiling mouldings and stone skirtings and the main banqueting hall with its elaborate maritime inspired woodcarvings. Despite the building’s heritage and dramatic period features, the interior feels fresh and modern. The apartments have their own entrance and each has been designed individually. In the show apartment, you are greeted with a beautiful vintage Murano glass chandelier in the entrance hall and intricate leather applique wall surfacces and Italian marble in the hallway. There are exquisite silk rugs, sumptuous sofas and dark walnut and velvet chairs. ‘We brought a touch of Belgravia to the city,’ says Kemp. ‘The palette is neutral but the look is dynamic.’
Stroll past the kitchen and a guest bedroom suite, and a stunning Italian marble staircase leads to the second guest bedroom suite and master bedroom, dressing room and ensuite. Here, twenty-first century features such as an oval free-standing bath, a huge double shower and an aqua vision TV are teamed with the elegant lines of the 1930s in the form of a beautiful bespoke double vanity unit, geometric mirrors and a striking panelled bed head.
‘This is a Beaux Arts building so the details are slightly more linear and geometric than Art Deco,’ says Kemp. ‘We’ve introduced these elements in an understated way as it’s a modern home that suits modern life but we’ve given it a touch of 1930’s Hollywood glamour.’

Places to see in ( St Columb Major - UK )
Places to see in ( St Columb Major - UK )
St Columb Major is a civil parish and town in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Often referred to locally as St Columb, it is situated approximately seven miles southwest of Wadebridge and six miles east of Newquay. The designation Major distinguishes it from the nearby settlement and parish of St Columb Minor on the coast. An electoral ward simply named St Columb exists with a population at the 2011 census of 5,050.
Twice a year the town plays host to hurling, a medieval game once common throughout Cornwall but now only played in St Columb and St Ives. It is played on Shrove Tuesday and then again on the Saturday eleven days later. The game involves two teams of several hundred people (the 'townsmen' and the 'countrymen') who endeavour to carry a silver ball made of apple wood to goals set two miles (3 km) apart, making the parish, around 25 square miles in area, the de facto largest sports ground in the world.
St Columb is situated in mid-Cornwall, about 5 miles (8 km) inland from the north coast. The parish covers an area of 12,884 acres (5,214 ha) or 20.1 square miles (52 km2). Its highest point, at 709 ft (216 m), is Castle an Dinas, the site of an Iron Age hill fort about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of St Columb. Much of the land in the parish is used for farming (both arable and pastoral), with small areas of woodland. There is also some moorland in the generally slightly higher northern and eastern parts of the parish, notably part of the Goss Moor in the southeast, Castle Downs below Castle an Dinas (east) and an area of moorland adjoining Rosenannon Downs (northeast). The Vale of Lanherne, the valley of the River Menalhyl (see below) is famed for its beauty and occupies the area to the west of the town, connecting St Columb and St Mawgan churchtown.
St Columb occupies a plateau at about 300 ft (90 m) elevation. The north part of the town (known as 'Bridge') descends into the Vale of Lanherne, having a minimum elevation of approximately 165 ft (50 m). It was originally a linear settlement built on the main road running north-east to south-west, but modern estates have since been built, extending the town to the south and east.
The A39 main road runs north to south through the parish. Until the late 1970s it went through the town but a bypass now carries traffic east of St Columb. The A30 dual carriageway also runs through the southeastern part of the parish north of Goss Moor. The Par-Newquay railway line does not enter St Columb parish but forms part of its southern boundary. A small part of the parish is occupied by a corner of Newquay Airport, which is Cornwall’s principal civil airport.
( St Columb Major - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting St Columb Major . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in St Columb Major - UK
