Dubbed the ‘Windsor of the North,’ Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country and has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for over 700 years.
Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle is one of the UK’s most significant heritage destinations and best days out in Northumberland.
The Castle’s rich history is brimming with drama, intrigue and extraordinary people; from a gunpowder plotter and visionary collectors, to decadent hosts and medieval England’s most celebrated knight: Harry Hotspur.
In recent years it has also taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions, featuring as the magnificent Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey and previously appearing as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films. It has previously been a location used in Becket, Blackadder; Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Ivanhoe, and many others listed in the Location section of the Alnwick Castle website.
The lavish Italian Renaissance style interiors of the State Rooms are contained like a jewel within Alnwick Castle’s magnificent fortified exterior. Originally remodelled as a family home by the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, and beautifully restored in the 19th Century, these luxurious interiors are a vision to behold.
The State Rooms are filled with one of the country’s finest private art and furniture collections, including work by Canaletto, Titian, Van Dyck, Turner, and Dobson; an extensive gallery of Meissen, Chelsea, and Paris porcelain; and the priceless Cucci cabinets, originally created for Louis XIV of France at the Palace of Versailles. From the windows of each room, the castle's grounds can be admired, and beyond them, the landscape created by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.

The town is situated largely on the south bank of the River Aln, 32 miles (51 km) south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, 5 miles (8 km) inland from the North Sea at Alnmouth and 34 miles (55 km) north of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

This video features Alnwick Castle. We visited the castle on our way from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Farne Island Boat Trip.
Alnwick Castle is located in the English county of Northumberland, UK. It has been home to the Percy family for the last 700 years. Today, the 12th Duke and Duchess of Northumberland still live in the castle and some sections of the castle are open to the public.
The castle is famous as the shooting location as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in two (2) of Harry Potter 's movies and for the filming of the British television drama series, Downtown Abbey.
The castle is steeped in history and Harry Porter fans can take part in their popular broomstick training sessions, lead by their resident wizard professors.
All guided tours, broomstick training and live shows within the castle comes free with the admission fees.
Note that additional entrance fees are required for the visit to the Alnwick Garden.

Day two of our weekend away without the kids and today we visited Alwick Castle. The ancestral home of the Duke of Northumberland is also famous for being the location where Harry Potter learnt to fly a broom in the film Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. Whilst here we came across a questionable wedding photographer and also visited Britain's largest second hand book store.

Todays video is a vlog of my weekend away to Alnwick, Northumberland. I was invited to spend the weekend at The Hogs Head Inn in Alnwick to check out their hotel as they are making there services more disability accessible and disability friendly. I traveled with LNER trains to Alnmouth. I also visited Alnwick Castle (filming setting for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Alnwick Gardens in the vlog. I also had a look round the famous second hand bookshop Barter Books.

Cragside is a Victorian country house near the town of Rothbury in Northumberland, England. It was the home of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, founder of the Armstrong Whitworth armaments firm. An industrial magnate, scientist, philanthropist and inventor of the hydraulic crane and the Armstrong gun, Armstrong also displayed his inventiveness in the domestic sphere, making Cragside the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power. The entire estate was technologically advanced; the architect of the house, Richard Norman Shaw, wrote that it was equipped with wonderful hydraulic machines that do all sorts of things. In the grounds, Armstrong built dams and created lakes to power a sawmill, a water-powered laundry, early versions of a dishwasher and a dumb waiter, a hydraulic lift and a hydroelectric rotisserie. In 1887, Armstrong was raised to the peerage, the first engineer or scientist to be ennobled. He took his title from the name of his house, to become Bar...

Robson begins by takes to the skies to get a bird's-eye view of Northumberland. He is given a lesson in flying a glider at a former RAF training base at Milfield, before going on a helicopter ride to Lancelot `Capability' Brown's birthplace at Kirkharle. Finally, Robson pays a visit to a farm that is home to more than 350 combine harvesters and improvise a song.

Dunstanburgh Castle lies on a spectacular headland on the coast of Northumberland in northern England, between the villages of Craster and Embleton.
The castle is the largest in Northumberland. an English county that boasts more castle than any other. The site shows traces of much earlier occupation before the erection of the castle was started in 1313 by the Earl of Lancaster
The castle did not play a significant part in the border warfare against Scotland. In the Wars of the Roses the castle was held for the Lancastrians in 1462 and 1464. The damage done was not made good and the castle fell steadily into decay. A report in 1538 mentioned it as being a very reuynus howsse and of smalle strength and another source in 1550 described it as in wonderfull great decaye. It continued to deteriorate and was robbed of stone for the building of other places in the area. The last private owner Sir Arthur Sutherland donated the castle to the Ministry of Works in 1929. The castle is now owned by the National Trust and in the care of English Heritage. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building. It lies within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
