Barton's Britain: Sizewell
Laura Barton and Felix Clay travel to Sizewell in Suffolk, site of the UK's newest nuclear power plant, with another proposed for construction
Sizewell A Site declared fuel free
The Office for Nuclear Regulation has accepted that Magnox's Sizewell A Site is fuel free with 99 per cent of the radioactive hazard now removed from the former power station.
The final flask of fuel was dispatched to Sellafield in Cumbria for reprocessing in summer 2014 and since then a rigorous verification process has been undertaken, including the deployment of remotely operated vehicles, to check the cooling ponds are empty.
This film shows those vehicles in action.

EDF Energy restoration project near Sizewell uncovers Suffolk heritage
EDF Energy has worked with local Suffolk contractors and architects to restore a Grade 2 listed building to its former glory.
Upper Abbey Farmhouse, sited on land owned by EDF Energy in Leiston in Suffolk, was damaged by a fire in 2010, which destroyed the roof and much of the interior.
A heritage assessment uncovered rare original details including carved and moulded timbers, which date parts of the house back to the 17th Century. EDF Energy then enlisted the expertise of Sweett Group in Cambridge and Brooks Architects in Leiston to sensitively undertake the necessary restoration work. This included reinstating the roof, floors and collapsed brickwork using traditional building techniques.
To mark the completion of the restoration project EDF Energy and its contractor Morgan Sindall welcomed Sheila Gedny, who was born in the house, her husband Dougie and their daughter Linda for a VIP tour along with other local guests who had a connection to the building.

Speaker 1 Tim Hannon, Director, Brooks Architects: The opportunity to work with [a terrible fire nearly gutted the 17th Century Georgian Farmhouse in 2009] EDF Energy on restoring what’s actually a really interesting Grade II listed building, was an opportunity we really couldn’t pass up.
Speaker 2 Mick Paternoster, Senior Site Manager – Morgan Sindall: We were able to get round, we could see all the burnt wall plate [EDF Energy made a significant investment to restore the Grade II listed building]
and what we needed to do regarding brick work, we had to take sections of brick work down, rebuild it, there is a dental work on the top there we had to rebuild.
[A passionate project team are bringing it back to life]
And then the challenge was how we were going to do the roof, but we have got plans in place, we have got a workshop on site that all the stuff is fashioned in. So we have got foundations in place for how we wanted to go about it.
We need two and a half thousand bricks in both gables.
[2,000 original bricks were saved for restoration]
We were able to reclaim about two thousand bricks. The mortar is traditional, same as what the plaster will be inside, traditional plaster inside. We will be cutting a scarf joint across here.
Speaker 1 Tim Hannon, Director – Brooks Architects: Refurbish this back to its original condition.
Speaker 2 Mick Paternoster, Senior Site Manager – Morgan Sindall: Cutting this square in, [Embracing historical construction techniques and materials] and then it will be joisted through this square as well, as we just continue to reinstall the new joist into these old beams. And then the diagonal bracing is housed in to the new column.
Speaker 1 Tim Hannon, Director – Brooks Architects: Sliding sashes, which as you can see, are still operating perfectly; the original version of the curtains.
EDF’s decision to fund reinstating that original building I think is a really important statement [Leaving a legacy for the Leiston community] in terms of respecting the cultural history of the local area and the importance that the building gives to the local amenity.
[Restoration Completed June 2016]
