Quick intro about Cartagena from Wikipedia:
The city of Cartagena, known in the colonial era as Cartagena de Indias, is a major port founded in 1533, located on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region. It was strategically located between the Magdalena and Sinú rivers and became the main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empire, establishing its importance by the early 1540s. During the colonial era it was a key port for the export of Peruvian silver to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system. It was defensible against pirate attacks in the Caribbean. It is the capital of the Bolívar Department, and had a population 971,592 as of 2016. It is the fifth-largest city in Colombia and the second largest in the region, after Barranquilla. The urban area of Cartagena is also the fifth-largest urban area in the country. Economic activities include the maritime and petrochemicals industries, as well as tourism.

Cartagena, Colombia -1- The Walled City - Enter!
From a strategic defense standpoint, back in the mid-1600's the Spanish began building Fort San Felipe to protect the city from attack by the British. In addition to that they built a Wall around what was the entire city at the time. The 'Wall' encircles the city for several kilometers and in key places is close to the water so they would be able to attack any oncoming troops as they came on shore.
Medellin vs Cartagena | Which Colombian City is better for tourist and why?
Find out the differences between Medellin and Cartagena and which place I prefer to travel. There are are some huge differences between the two cities.
I actually love both of them and I will continue to travel to both cities. I love the vibes I get from Cartagena with its old city walls and the waves hitting the sea wall. I also love Bocagrande and its appearance. It looks like you are in Miami.
Medellin is a up and coming city and has a lot of modern infrastructures. Transportation in Medellin was easy when Uber was available but You still have the train that is cheap and easy to navigate.

Cartagena, Colombia - Historic Walled City - 4K
Cartagena is one of the most friendly, safe, and beautiful cities in Colombia. I would even say that this city is one of the best in South America. The tourism here is growing fast, visit the city before it loses its authentic experience and feel. I have been fortunate enough to visit this city many times, and each visit I get to experience something new.

Here is my effort at showing some of the beauty of Cartagena, Colombia. The narrow streets, dancers, Torre del Reloj (clock tower), Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, and the walls surrounding the city all tell a little of the history of Cartagena de Indias.

Explore Cartagena Colombia. We're in love ????
We spend the day exploring the beautiful city of Cartagena and have come up with a list of things for you to do!
Cartagena is on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and therefore has lots of amazing beaches but also tonnes of culture. We start the day at the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas exploring the old fortress (castle) with it’s amazing views and old tunnels.
We then make our way into the up and coming and gentrifying area of Getsemani. It’s a vibrant area full of street art, many restaurants and squares that come alive at night. While here we explore the streets and also grab a bite to eat while having a Colombian beer.
Later we head to the old walled city of Cartagena to see what it has to offer. We buy some bracelets and then discover some music and dancers performing in a square. We also grab a Colombian coffee at the the coolest little coffee shop/book store in Cartagena called Abaco Libros Y Cafe.
Lastly we try to find the best views over the city to watch the sunset. Unfortunately the rooftop at the Movich is closed for a private event so we end up across the street at the Sofia Hotel.

Cartagena, Colombia is the sum of its incredible parts; its colonial, republican and modern architecture, the temptation of its vibrant nightlife, its cultural festivals, exuberant landscapes, magnificent beaches, outstanding gastronomic offerings and its important hotel and tourism infrastructure. It is a fantastic city that guards the secrets of its history in its walls and balconies, its buildings and its narrow, cobbled streets.
Framed by its beautiful bay, Cartagena de Indias is one of the best preserved and most enchanting cities in the Americas.
Cartagena de Indias, one of the most popular destinations on the rise in the world according to TripAdvisor
Cartagena began as a small fishing town that was colonised by Spanish, British, and French. One of the original towns sharing a rich history of pirates, independence, and worldwide importance in the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Cartagena has become one of the greatest tourist attractions in South America. Cartagena is full of beautiful beaches and natural places all around. The city is famous for its many historical sites, and incredible architecture. Cartagena gathers the best of a calm Caribbean town, with an artsy scene, and many things to do.
Castillo San Felipe De Barajas (San Felipe Castle), Cartagena:
The Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is a fortress in the city of Cartagena, Colombia. The castle is located on the Hill of San Lázaro in a strategic location, dominating approaches to the city by land or sea. It was built by the Spanish during the colonial era. Construction began in the year 1536, and it was originally known as the Castillo de San Lázaro, It was expanded in 1657.
Wander through the tunnels of the San Felipe de Barajas Castle to discover the interior of the “guardian of Cartagena.” The Spaniards sought to fend off British attacks, and in 1657 they finished building this fortress on the hill of San Lazaro, thus taking control of the only access point to the city from the mainland. Great pictures of the bay can be taken from the castle.
Getsemani, Cartagena:
Getsemaní, the outer walled town, is less obviously impressive than Cartagena's old city but has some charming parts and is well worth exploring. In recent years it has been the focus of Cartagena's exploding gentrification and growing hotel industry, and boasts excellent bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as some superb street art on its derelict buildings.
The plaza in front of the Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad is a massive draw for locals and travelers alike come sundown, when street food vendors set up their stalls and a crowd of revelers sticks around until well after midnight.
Old Town, Cartagena:
Without doubt, Cartagena's old city is its principal attraction, particularly the inner walled town, consisting of the historical districts of El Centro and San Diego. It is a real gem of colonial architecture, packed with churches, monasteries, plazas, palaces and mansions with their famous overhanging balconies and shady patios.
The best approach to experiencing the Old Town is to wander leisurely, savoring the architectural details, street life and local snacks along the way.

We were at Cartagena de Indias Colombia, visiting its most representative and beautiful places like the Getsemani neighborhood, the Clock Tower Monument and the Walled City or Old City.
We enjoyed watching the nightlife in Cartagena Colombia, we stayed near the Plaza de la Trinidad at Getsemaní neighborhood in Cartagena Colombia, a place frequented by young backpackers because of the proximity of this place to the most touristic area in Cartagena de Indias Colombia as it is the walled city or ancient city where are the places that attract tourists such as clubs, restaurants, museums, parks, the same wall, the beautiful horse-drawn carriages that goes perfectly with the colonial architecture of the old Cartagena Colombia that moves us in time.
At the Plaza de la Trinidad in the Getsemani neighborhood in Cartagena de Indias Colombia the place we find an attraction to young tourists for their artistic shows, there in the area, there is a great diversity of restaurants, hotels and hostels that offer more affordable prices, good security because It is a tourist area.

Beautiful Women on Friday Night Cartagena Colombia 4K
We are in Cartagena de Indias Colombia, on Friday and Saturday are the days where there is more nightlife in all cities and Cartagena is not the exception, although in Cartagena every day they are very busy and full of tourists, street vendors, during the week, its streets in the old city, the walled city, the beaches and the Getsemany neighborhood are even more crowded with beautiful people. Women especially dress up and suggestive costumes, the atmosphere of party and celebration is noticeable everywhere. Just going out to walk the streets fills you with joy when you see happiness in people. There are lots of restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the old or walled city of Cartagena Colombia, in many there are chairs and tables where you can accommodate on the street and you see a lot of beautiful women and groups of people from all ages that simply run through the old city and the Getsemani neighborhood.
The Trinity Square in the Getsemaní neighborhood is a very busy place and visited by foreigners and young people, there are lots of shows and fast food sales at a good price, also this Trinity Square, is surrounded by restaurants, clubs and bars, the difference is that in this neighborhood that is also bohemian in the same way as the old city or walled city, here the prices are lower, which attracts backpackers and young people whose budget is lower than the average of the tourist who attends the old city or walled city where the best hotels and restaurants are located.

Walled City of Cartagena in Cartagena, Colombia
The city was founded on June 1, 1533, and named after Cartagena, Spain, settlement in the region around Cartagena Bay by various indigenous people dates back to 4000 BC. During the Spanish colonial period Cartagena served a key role in administration and expansion of the Spanish empire. It was a center of political, ecclesiastical, and economic activity. In 1984, Cartagena's colonial walled city and fortress were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Cartagena has become one of South America’s most vibrant cities—and the undoubted queen of Colombia’s northern coast. Offering old-world luxury, exquisite fine-dining options and a hip nightlife, Cartagena’s old town is fast becoming a must-see for any traveller visiting Colombia. From photo etiquette to dodging tourist traps, here’s everything you need to know before visiting the famous Walled City.
Compared to other parts of Colombia, and even other neighbourhoods in Cartagena, the Walled City is notorious for its heavier price tag. With stunning hotels on every street, some of Colombia’s best restaurants and row after row of designer boutiques, Old Cartagena definitely attracts the more upmarket traveller, so be prepared to pay more—for everything.
Yes, the walled city is expensive. However, if you’re able to splash out, it’s probably worth it for a few days. With its perfectly preserved colonial architecture, blooming flowers hanging from bright pink balconies, and fairy-lit stone archways, this is, without doubt, the most beautiful neighbourhood in Cartagena. You can expect any boutique hotel you book here to be housed in a 200-year-old mansion and luxuriously decorated with crystal chandeliers, exposed brick walls and four-poster beds. So, if you want to live that Cartagena luxury lifestyle (at a fraction of the price you’d pay in Europe), then the Walled City is where you want to be.
Restaurants are world-class…
Compared to other Latin countries like Mexico and Peru, Colombia falls a little short on the world culinary stakes. However, in recent years Cartagena has upped its game and each year more and more world-class chefs are flocking to the Walled City with bolder, more delicious menus. It’s rumoured that it’s even starting to overtake Colombia’s culinary capital, Bogota. If you’re a foodie, La Cevicheria, Carmen and Alma are must-tries while you’re here.
But don’t forget about the street stands
Ok, so there are hundreds of beautiful restaurants within the Walled City, but don’t overlook the street food. With its beautiful Caribbean climate, tons of exotic fruits, such as papaya, maracuya, mangos and pineapple, grow in abundance here. So, when you see a lady selling fresh fruit salad cups, do yourself a favour and buy one. They’re delicious and super cheap.
A photo with a Palenquera isn’t free
You’ve seen them on the front of every Colombia travel guide. You’ll find them painted on thousands of souvenirs. They’ve even become Colombia’s most popular business logo. When visiting Cartagena’s Walled City, you’ll soon spot the palenqueras: black women in colourful dresses expertly balancing bowls of tropical fruit on their heads. With such beautiful smiles and colourful wear, they take a great photo. However, please bear in mind that these women, the majority very poor, make their living from posing for tourists and won’t be best pleased if you try and sneak one of them. For a couple of pounds, you can help the local community and have you perfect photo—win-win!
A walking tour is a good idea
Cartagena’s Walled City—witnessing almost 500 years of piracy, wars and slavery—is steeped in history. Every house and street here, right down to the intricate door handles used to signal your hierarchy in society, has a story. There are plenty of walking tours available (many operating on a donation system), most of which leave daily from the Clock Tower or Plaza Santa Teresa.
