Hospital: 1 Dead 16 Critical After Tornadoes
PILGER, Neb. (AP) -- At least one person was killed and 16 others were in critical condition on Monday after massive tornadoes swept through northeast Nebraska, destroying more than half of the town of Pilger, hospital and emergency officials said.
The National Weather Service said at least two twisters touched down within roughly a mile of each other. Emergency crews and residents spent the evening sorting through demolished homes and businesses in the town of about 350, roughly 100 miles northwest of Omaha.
More than half of the town is gone - absolutely gone, Stanton County Commissioner Jerry Weatherholt said. The co-op is gone, the grain bins are gone, and it looks like almost every house in town has some damage. It's a complete mess.
Victims were taken to three regional hospitals, and at least one had died from unspecified injuries, hospital officials said.
Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger estimated that 50 to 75 percent of Pilger was heavily damaged or destroyed in the storm. The local school is likely beyond repair, he said.
It's total devastation, Unger said.
Unger said five people had to be rescued from a rural home day care northwest of Stanton. That home was hit just before the storm moved into Pilger.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman declared a state of emergency, and the National Guard was preparing to deploy to assist local emergency responders and help with the cleanup. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency was expected to arrive in town Tuesday morning.
Pilger was evacuated for the night, and the Nebraska State Patrol closed all roads into town. Most residents made their own arrangements, but some were taken to a shelter in the nearby town of Wisner, Unger said.
Tornadoes also caused damage in Cuming and Wayne counties, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said in a news release.
We are still in a response mode in these communities, said Earl Imler, NEMA's operations officer. We are collecting damage reports from local officials on the ground.
Faith Regional Health Services in nearby Norfolk was treating 16 patients with critical injuries, and one person had died, said hospital spokeswoman Jodi Richey.
Providence Medical Center in nearby Wayne treated three tornado patients, including two who had lacerations, said hospital spokeswoman Sandy Bartling. Two were released Monday evening, and the third patient was in stable condition, she said.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service were also tracking a tornado near the town of Burwell, in central Nebraska.

STORYLINE:
At least 55 people were killed and hundreds injured on Tuesday and Wednesday by dozens of tornadoes that ploughed across US states of Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama.
The nation's deadliest barrage of twisters in almost 23 years flattened entire streets, smashed warehouses and sent tractor-trailers flying.
Some houses were reduced to splintered piles of lumber while others looked like life-size dollhouses with their walls sheared away.
Crews going door to door to search for bodies had to contend with downed power lines, snapped trees and flipped-over cars.
Jasmine Clark, a resident of Lafayette, Tennessee, said the tornado picked up and carried her house while her family was inside.
The next thing I know we're all flying up in the air with the house...I was the first one up and I was hollering for my daddy and my step mom and my sister, and about five minutes later my sister and my step mom were together and they were three houses down. My daddy was over two football fields down the road, Clark said.
31 people died from severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in Tennessee, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency officials confirmed.
At least 12 people died in and around Lafayette, and search teams were looking for victims in a pond with the help of search dogs.
Meanwhile, in Arkansas 13 were killed, emergency officials said.
The storm had winds estimated at between 136-165 mph when it hit Clinton, Arkansas, according to forecasters.
Nationwide, at least 133 people were injured.
It was one of the 15 worst tornado death tolls since 1950, and the nation's deadliest barrage of tornadoes since 76 people were killed in Pennsylvania and Ohio in May 31, 1985.
While the weather was unusually severe, winter tornadoes are not uncommon.
The peak tornado season is late winter through midsummer, but the storms can happen at any time of the year with the right conditions.
The tornadoes could be due to La Nina, a cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean that can cause changes in weather patterns around the world.
Recent studies have found an increase in tornados in parts of the South during the winter when La Nina occurs.

Clip-clop of shame: Hungover Chinese man forced to return horse that he stole from stud farm the night before… and he’s still in fancy dress
dailymail.co.uk/news/peoplesdaily/article-3069965/Chinese-man-steals-horse-ride-home-big-night-out.html
~
A man in Beijing has recently risen to fame in China for stealing a horse and riding home on it through the bustling city after he got drunk during a night out.
The man, named only as Mr Wang, had been at a fancy dress party held at a stud farm on Sunday and decided to take one of the horses from the stables after having a few too many drinks.
He took some reigns and rode the horse 12 miles home wearing his traditional blue cheongsam costume, leaving a number of passers-by very puzzled, reported the People's Daily Online.
The whole journey, which would only take 15 to 20 minutes by car, took around three hours, although Mr Wang says he only vaguely remembers it.
When he got home, he left the horse on a patch of grass outside his apartment before heading to bed.

These are the technological developments that will allow us to move ourselves and our cargo cheaper, greener, and faster, through the air, going forward. This is the future of flight.
With the first all-electric twin-engine, self-powered plane successfully crossing the English Channel this month, and the ongoing effort of the
Solar Impulse team to become the first completely solar-powered aircraft to fly around the world, the amount of innovation targeting the aviation industry is eye-opening.
Within the next year, unmanned, solar-powered drones like the Silent Falcon will hit the commercial UAV market.
The Joby Aviation S2 electric is a proposed Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft that could be five times as efficient as a conventional personal airplane.
Airbus’ two passenger version of the E-Fan will use on-board lithium batteries to power two electric engines.
The Aeroscraft ML868 could lead a comeback of giant airships. The 770 foot-long behemoth can carry 200 tons with cargo bays larger than any current air, truck or rail transport vehicle.
Aerion’s AS2 is the first supersonic commercial jet since the Concorde. It will fly at a speed of Mach 1.6. Laminar flow technology and better wing design will reduce drag by 20%.
By the middle of the 2020’s we’ll likely see solar powered drones delivering broadband to millions for a fraction of the cost of traditional satellites.
Building on the concept of drones and autonomous flying technology, fully-automated planes will take to the skies to revolutionize not just the air cargo delivery industry, but possibly personal air travel as well, much like what’s happening today with driverless cars.
By 2030, plant-based fuels should account for 30% or more of an airlines’ fuel consumption.
Airbus’ hybrid commercial airliner will emit barely any emissions or noise on takeoff and landing thanks to lithium-air batteries.
Boeing and NASA could team to launch a hybrid commercial airliner called SUGAR for Subsonic Ultra-Green, Aircraft Research, which uses two-thirds less fuel than an equivalent sized aircraft from 2015.
Traveling 10% slower, but using 70% less fuel than today’s Boeing 737, the D8 Series Double Bubble’s fuselage will provide 20% of its lift.
By 2040, we could see the world’s first hydrogen powered commercial flight. The hydrogen would be cryogenically frozen.
EAD’s Zero Emission High Supersonic Transport passenger jet, running on biofuel, could cut the more than 6,000 mile flight from Paris to Tokyo to just 2:30 minutes.
Like a fighter jet on an aircraft carrier, commercial planes could be catapulted into the air, reducing the length of runways by one-third.
As if they were a flock of migrating birds, more intelligent systems could allow aircraft on the same routes to self-organize into a flying patter, reducing wind drag and saving fuel.
Six hydrogen engines, a rear engine that doubles as a wind turbine, and solar panels on its roof and wings will propel the zero-emission Progress Eagle, a triple-decker, 800-passenger airplane concept that we could see in production by 2070.

VENICE, La. (AP) _ The government has sent skimmers, booms and other resources to clean up a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that's become far worse than initially thought and threatens the fragile marshlands along the shore, a Coast Guard official said Thursday.
Coast Guard Rear Adm. Sally Brice-O'Hara said at the White House that the government's priority was to support the oil company BP PLC in employing booms, skimmers, chemical dispersants and controlled burns to fight the oil surging from the seabed.
An executive for BP PLC, which operated the oil rig that exploded and sank last week, said earlier in the day on NBC's Today that the company would welcome help from the U.S. military.
We'll take help from anyone, said Doug Suttles, chief operating officer for BP Exploration and Production.
The Coast Guard has urged the company to formally request more resources from the Defense Department. President Barack Obama has dispatched Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson had been dispatched to help with the spill. The president said his administration will use every single available resource at our disposal to respond to the spill.
But time may be running out: Oil from the spill had crept to within 12 miles of the coast, and it could reach shore as soon as Friday. A third leak was discovered, which government officials said is spewing five times as much oil into the water as originally estimated _ about 5,000 barrels a day coming from the blown-out well 40 miles offshore.
Suttles had initially disputed the government's estimate, and that the company was unable to handle the operation to contain it.
But early Thursday, he acknowledged on Today that the leak may be as bad as the government says. He said there was no way to measure the flow at the seabed and estimates have to come from how much oil makes it to the surface.
If the well cannot be closed, almost 100,000 barrels of oil, or 4.2 million gallons, could spill into the Gulf before crews can drill a relief well to alleviate the pressure. By comparison, the Exxon Valdez, the worst oil spill in U.S. history, leaked 11 million gallons into Alaska's Prince William Sound in 1989.
We're not doing everything we can do, said Billy Nungesser, president of Plaquemines Parish, which straddles the Mississippi River at the tip of Louisiana.
I don't think there's a lot of blame going around here, people are just cocerned about their livlihoods, said Sullivan Vullo, who owns La Casa Cafe in Port Sulphur.

Living Universe | Journey To Another Stars - Documentary 4K
The Earth is Not Alone:
LIVING UNIVERSE is an interstellar adventure that seeks to answer the most profound question of all: are we alone? Based on the latest scientific knowledge, we will take a journey to a planet beyond our solar system in search of life.
We ask the world's leading space scientists what we might find if we travel to a neighboring star system. Recent breakthroughs have proven that every star we see in the sky is orbited by at least one planet, many similar to our own Earth. How do we get to these exoplanets? Once there, what will we find? And what will it mean for humanity when we discover we are not alone?
Our speculative journey through space is set a hundred years in the future - when we have the technology to journey well beyond our solar system. On this first expedition, our star ship Aurora will be piloted not by astronauts, but by the artificial intelligence (A.I.) we call Artemis. We imagine how Artemis travels through space, on its 25-year journey, at one fifth of the speed of light. Its objective is Minerva B, a planet much like our own, with an atmosphere, temperature and liquid water that appears a likely candidate to contain life.
With spectacular special effects we will reach and explore a new planet as we seek to answer the most profound question of all: are we alone in the universe? Our guides on this journey are narrator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and as the voice of our AI, Artemis, real-life astrophysicist, Professor Tamara Davis.
Inspired and informed by our rapidly developing knowledge of far-off worlds, our best scientists - including NASA engineers, astrophysicists and astronomers - we will discover that this amazing journey is not only possible, it is inevitable. To venture into distant space is our destiny.
LIVING UNIVERSE captures a pivotal moment in the human story. A film full of insight and inspiration certain to thrill anyone who dreams of distant worlds, or have ever wondered why are we here?
Have you ever wondered that someone like you, sitting less than a mile away, in some other universe, exists? The possibility in itself seems frightening as well as astonishing.
From breaking news and intriguing historical documentaries to conspiracy theories, classified NASA files and UFO's. We provide you with material that the government doesn't want you to see. The Insomnia team comes up with a promise. To keep up with the same, the team now brings to us a documentary that aims to change your perspective Of another existence, of another possibility, as today, the scientists now believe there may really be the presence of a parallel universe - and in fact, also believe that there may be an infinite number of parallel universes, and where we live today just happens to be only one of them and many of these other parallel universes come with different laws of physics as well.
These other universes that we are talking about not only contain space, time and strange forms of exotic matter but to surprise you, Some of them may even contain you, only maybe in a slightly different form. The thought itself is quite intriguing and scary on the same hand. The basis of this theory is as we know it the idea that parallel universes are constantly spinning off from reality that we humans know of. Though generally ignored at the time, that theory has gone on to become not just a popular topic of study among respected physicists, but the inspiration for such popular films, television shows, and books as Star Trek and The Golden Compass. according to the sources.
The video soon progresses into the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), that is now changing everything, as some say that the remarkable images reveal the true shape of the universe through baby pictures of the same from the time when it was 4 hundred thousand years old, looking so back in time, when there wasn't even the formation of galaxies yet. The WMAP is catching the very first signs of creation as it is officially tagged with measuring radiation that is left over from Big Bang. And now scientists have devised an experiment to find the overall true shape of the universe. The WMAP hence shows that the universe is flat. From here arises the possibility of more mind boggling parallel universe that are of the level-2 type and is made up of giant cosmic soap bubbles that float in hyperspace. Each of these bubbles within it has a whole universe. Now, the question that arises is that - Do we all live in a giant cosmic bubble?

Top Secret Flying Discs - Area 51 &Flying Saucers - Bob Lazar - Documentary
Area 51 is a top-secret military base 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas that for years has been the focus of many researchers but the reason you may have heard of Area 51 is because of Bob Lazar. Bob Lazar’s story stands out as one of the most inquisitive, but surprisingly credible stories. His work was to back engineer alien flying saucers that the government had contained in a secret underground facility called S4. Fearing for his safety in 1989, Area 51 physicist, Bob Lazar, decided to unveil the truth behind the top secret work he was involved with in Area 51. About 30 years ago, Lazar told a reporter he was a physicist working at S-4, a government laboratory near Area 51 and he was working with other physicists trying to back-engineer a downed alien spacecraft. That reporter was George Knapp of Channel 8.
