Footage of our epic Adventure day. Barbuda is an island in the Eastern Caribbean, and forms part of the state of Antigua and Barbuda. It has a population of about 1,638 (at the 2011 Census), most of whom live in the town of Codrington. The island is famous for its beautiful pristine pink coral sand beaches. Low Bay beach is 17 of unbroken miles of pink sand beach. With mysterious abandoned forts, Neolithic caves and beachfront untouched since the days of Christopher Columbus, Barbuda is host to a wild bird sanctuary standing on a mesmerizing lagoon. A liberal scattering of ancient shipwrecks off its shores, Barbuda is both the deepest retreat into solitude you could dream of and almost untouched to the world.

10. Frigate Bird Sanctuary
Barbuda's Frigate Bird Sanctuary is a haven for birders. Accessible only by boat, the bird sanctuary lies in Barbuda's northwest lagoon and is home to one of the largest nesting colonies of frigate birds in the Caribbean.
9. Fig Tree Drive
Along Antigua's southern coast, Fig Tree Drive winds through rainforest, farmlands, and fishing villages. This picturesque drive offers a glimpse of local life. Banana trees (called figs by the locals), mango trees, and coconut palms dot the landscape, as well as the ruins of sugar mills.
8. Museum of Antigua and Barbuda
The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda traces the history of these islands from their geological origins to political independence in 1981. Housed in the museum is a full-scale replica of an Arawak dwelling, as well as pottery, weaving, tools, and exhibits on the islands' different ecosystems.
7. Devil's Bridge: Indian Town National Park
Along the rugged northeast coast, the dramatic scenery of Indian Town National Park features the natural limestone Devil's Bridge, sculpted over the centuries by the pounding surf. At high tide, waves force geysers of water through blowholes in the nearby rock.

1. The islands of Antigua and Barbuda have been inhabited for almost 5,000 years! The island of Antigua was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and named for the Church of Santa Maria de la Antigua in Seville. Antigua was colonized by Britain in 1632; Barbuda was first colonized in 1678. After 349 years as a British colony, Antigua and Barbuda gained independence in 1981.
2. Cricket- This is a national pass time on the island, and the smallest child is involved in the sport. Games are played everywhere on the island. Visit the Antigua Barbuda Museum to see one of the greatest cricketers ever to play the game. The game of Cricket in Antigua is more of a religion than a mere sport. A day of cricket is a brilliant way to view Antigua culture first hand – the excitement and energy that surround the game is fantastic fun and the whole island is literally bouncing when cricket is in town.
3. There are no permanent rivers on any of the islands, and Antigua is the only island to have 3 streams! Antigua and Saudi Arabia share the same feature that neither has any permanent rivers. Both countries rely heavily on desalination for their fresh water supplies.
4. Devil’s Bridge. Situated at Indian Town, this is a natural bridge at the head of Indian Creek with blow-holes and spouting surf. Devil's Bridge got its name because of the large number of slaves that worked the nearby estates had thrown themselves into the sea from the bridge. It was said that the Devil would call them to cast themselves into the sea. The draw to the bridge is believed to be strong in order for so many suicides to have occurred.
5. The highest point of Antigua was known as the Boggy Peak until 4 August 2009, when it was renamed after Barack Obama who has a birthday on this day.

The NHC began monitoring a tropical wave over western Africa on August 26.[109] The disturbance entered the Atlantic late the next day,[110] gradually organizing into Tropical Storm Irma west of Cabo Verde around 15:00 UTC on August 30.[111] Early on August 31, Irma underwent a remarkable period of rapid intensification, with winds increasing from 70 mph (110 km/h) – a high-end tropical storm – to 115 mph (185 km/h), a major hurricane, in a mere 12 hours.[112] An eyewall replacement cycle then took place shortly thereafter, which caused the storm to fluctuate between Category 2 and 3 intensity. [113] Irma resumed intensifying on September 4, and was upgraded into a Category 4 hurricane by 21:00 UTC. At that time, hurricane warnings were issued for the Leeward Islands.

Barbuda is home to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, which is located in the Codrington Lagoon. Other points of interest include Highland House (the 18th-century home of the Codrington family) and the Indian Cave, which contains ancient Amerindian petroglyphs.

Griswold's ameiva (Ameiva griswoldi) is a species of lizard in the genus Ameiva. It is endemic to Antigua and Barbuda. It is found on both islands.
