30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are meeting Abel Tasman Eco Tours on Takaka Hill to explore a part of Abel Tasman National Park that not many people get to. It’s well off the beaten track in New Zealand and goes into Abel Tasman National Park’s ancient forest.
After being picked up by Abel Tasman Eco Tours, we take a stunning drive through Canaan Downs, a festival and Lord of the Rings location in New Zealand, on our way to the Abel Tasman National Park. Once we arrive Abel Tasman Eco Tours provide a few snacks then we are on our way on the Promised Land Tour.
The Promised Land Tour with Abel Tasman Eco Tours is a walking tour of the Abel Tasman National Park. Because it is an eco tour, we learn about the ecosystem of Abel Tasman National Park from the plants of the ancient beech forest of the Abel Tasman National Park to the native birds.
The Promised Land Tour takes us deep into the Abel Tasman National Park where we are thankful to have guides to keep us on the right tracks and teach us more about this stunning wilderness. However, the rain hits us big time, which we are prepared for knowing that the weather can change at any time.
So what do you think of this Abel Tasman tour? How does exploring the Abel Tasman National Park with Abel Tasman Eco Tours sound to you?

#131 ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK | 2 DAY HIKE | NEW ZEALAND | GREAT WALKS | MAY 2017
Travel Vlog #131
Abel Tasman National Park
We drove 3 hours from Malborough to Abel Tasman National Park to start our trek. The weather wasn't great and we were hoping it would get better for our hike.
We got to the DOC Totaranui campsite and got prepared for the hike, including prebooking or lodge for the following nights accommodation.
We set off on our walk at 9am. Starting with the headlands loop and then heading up the coastal path to Separation Point and Whariwharangi Lodge.
The walk was excellent and the weather was great! We got to the lodge and dropped off our bags and headed back to the beach to watch the seals again.
The following day we headed down the Gibbs Track to the top of Gibbs Hill before returning to the car which we left at Totaranui DOC campsite.
Its a shame we couldnt commit more time to doing a longer trek as we really enjoyed the 2 days in Abel Tasman National Park. Next time we visit I'm pretty sure we'll be spending a lot more time hiking.
Abel Tasman Coastal Track - Backpacking New Zealand
A 3-day trek along the shores of Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand. Starting from the trailhead at Marahau we hiked north. We stopped at Apple Tree Bay then Anchorage Bay for swimming along the route. The first night we camped at Te Pukatea. It was a quiet cove (only about 8 people camping here compared to Anchorage with easily 40+). For the second day we headed back to the main track then up a side trail to Cleopatra's Pool. The river is cold but worth a rock slide dip in. :-) We trekked further on this second day to Bark Bay. This was (my) favorite camp! The white sand was soft and there were stingrays grazing along the shore. We arrived in the early afternoon and had our own section of beach completely to ourselves until sunset. Multiple parties arrived later, making this a pretty popular camp spot, however it was still an enjoyable experience. On the third day we hiked further north, crossing many swing bridges and the beautiful long stretch of beach Onetahuti. We finished our excursion at Awaroa Bay. The Lodge opened just in time for us to enjoy some fresh coffee and draft beers. After a good swim here, our water taxi arrived. There are many water taxi companies to chose from that will take you back to Marahau. We chose AquaTaxi and loved it!
This was one of the BEST multi-night backpacking trips we've ever experienced!

Mt Arthur Summit Walk

Mt Arthur is a 4 hour hike(one way) to the summit from the Flora carpark. The carpark is 1.5 hrs drive from Nelson and I would recommend having a 4WD as the track is quite rough, especially in the wetter months.
It is a beautifully diverse walk, starting in the trees, then breaking in to the open plains then in to rocky mountain terrain. In winter the top is covered in snow.
Please bring enough water for your whole trip and check the weather before you go as conditions can change very quickly and it is a very exposed walk. Always tell some one where you are going and when you are to be back, especially if going alone, the New Zealand wilderness can be very unforgiving.
Hope you enjoy and please hit the Like and Subscribe for more of our travel adventures from New Zealand and around the world!

Water Taxi Abel Tasman New Zealand
For more information & to book:
Abel Tasman Aqua Taxi provides water taxi trips, sea shuttle services, guided tours, seal watching cruises and pack/luggage transport in Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand.
The Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand's smallest national park at 22,350ha. Established in 1942, it is famous for its golden beaches, turquoise waters, native bush walks and spectacular scenery.
There are two walking tracks; the beautiful coastal track which takes 3-5 days to walk the entire length and the more remote inland track through the hilly centre of the park which also takes 3-5 days.
If you dont have time to hike the entire length of the National Park then choose one of our half day or full day unguided walks combing with the Aqua Taxi from Kaiteriteri Beach and Marahau.
Kaiteriteri beach is an idyllic holiday place where many kiwis come to holiday. It is a little seaside town with a very laid back holiday atmosphere. Kaiteriteri is one of New Zealand's premier swimming beaches and is known for its safe, sheltered waters and golden sand. It is great to start your Abel Tasman experience straight off the beach with Aqua Taxi.

About the torrent river canyoning experience:
From Marahau you’ll join us on an exhilarating water taxi ride through the Astrolabe Roadstead into Anchorage. You then leave the golden sand beaches of the coast for a stunning 1.5 hour walk up and further into the Abel Tasman National Park. Along the way the guides will keep you entertained with endless amounts of stories about the history, culture, flora and fauna of the park. Delicious lunch is served before the action starts. At the top of the canyon you’ll jump into your rubber suit, crank your harness tight and pop your helmet on. After a clear safety briefing by the guides you enter the truly remote environment of the canyon. You’ll be jumping, sliding, abseiling, scrambling, floating and ziplining through this canyon for about 3.5 hours. The trip finishes with a royal slide into Cleopatras Pool…From the pool it is a 30 minute stroll along the river and the beach back to Anchorage where your water taxi awaits to zip you back to Marahau.
