Acton Lecture Series (May 6, 2010) - Saul Alinsky might be called the anti-Acton. As Lord Acton warned that power corrupts, Saul Alinsky -- the father of modern community organizing -- rejoiced that corruption empowers. Decades after Alinsky's death his ideas and teaching continue to shape the American political and social landscape. Barack Obama's first job in Chicago was as an organizer for an Alinsky group; Hillary Clinton's undergraduate thesis was written on Alinsky's precepts; contemporary organizations from the notorious ACORN to the Catholic-Church-supported United for Power and Justice are among Alinsky's progeny. This lecture supplies an overview of Alinksy's thinking and shows its application in current events.
Mr. Joseph A. Morris, a graduate of the college and the law school of the University of Chicago, is a partner in the law firm of Morris & De La Rosa, with offices in Chicago and London, maintaining an active practice in constitutional, business, labor, and international law. He is a member of the bars of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Supreme Court of Illinois, and several other courts. Mr. Morris served under President Reagan as assistant attorney general of the United States [in charge of international affairs and director of the Department of Justice Office of Liaison Services. He has appeared on numerous national and local television and radio programs. He has served as an American delegate to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. A leader in B'nai B'rith, he is also a member of the advisory board of Catholic Citizens of Illinois.

August 23 - Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn visit a royal favourite
On this day in Tudor history, 23rd August 1535, royal favourite and keen reformer Sir Nicholas Poyntz welcomed King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, to his home Acton Court in Iron Acton, South Gloucestershire, as part of the couple’s royal progress.
It was important for courtiers to impress the king and his consort, and Poyntz built a new wing on his property just for the royal couple!

Thornbury is a market town and civil parish in South Gloucestershire, England, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Bristol. It had a population of 12,063 at the 2011 Census.Thornbury is a Britain in Bloom award-winning town, with its own competition, Thornbury in Bloom. Suburbs include Morton and Thornbury Park. The civil parish includes the hamlet of Milbury Heath.
here is evidence of human activity in the Thornbury area in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, but evidence of the Roman presence is limited to the Thornbury hoard, of 11,460 Roman coins dating from AD 260–348, found in 2004 during the digging for a fishpond. The earliest documentary evidence of a village at Thornbyrig dates from the end of the 9th century. Domesday Book noted a manor of Turneberie belonging to William the Conqueror's consort, Matilda of Flanders, with 103 residents.
Thornbury was once the terminus of a Midland Railway (later LMS) branch line from Yate on the Bristol to Gloucester main line, with intermediate stations at Iron Acton and Tytherington. It lost its passenger services in June 1944 but lived on as a goods route, also serving quarries at Tytherington. The site of Thornbury railway station and the line have been redeveloped into a supermarket, a housing estate, a bypass road and a long footpath. Further relics of the line can be seen at Tytherington Quarry to the east of the town. There are plans to reopen the line to Yate via Tytherington and Iron Acton and possibly restore services to Gloucester and Bristol.
Thornbury had a market held in the high street and the market hall. It moved to Rock Street in 1911 but closed in the late 1990s, being partly replaced by a smaller market in a car park near the United Reformed Church. The older site has been redeveloped as a community centre called Turnberrie's; the older community centre, at 'the Chantry' in Castle Street remains in active use. The old market hall is now a clothes shop.
Thornbury's coat of arms combines the arms of four families important to its history: Attwells, Howard, Clare and Stafford. John Attwells bequeathed £500 for the establishment of a free school that merged with the grammar school in 1879. The Attwells arms was later adopted as the badge for the grammar school. The other three families held the manor at Thornbury over several centuries, with the Latin motto Decus Sabrinae Vallis (Jewel of the Severn Vale).
Thornbury has a high street, a shopping centre (St Mary's Centre), two supermarkets and many smaller shops. The town has seven places of worship: St Mary's Church, Christ the King Catholic Church, the Methodist Church, the United Reformed Church, St Paul's Church, and the Hackett and Thornbury Baptist churches. On the outskirts at Lower Morton stands an independent evangelical church, Morton Baptist Church.

Robert Mitchum stars in this WW 2 drama as an American Army officer assigned to represent another officer being court-martialed for murder. The defendant is superbly played by Keenan Wynn, and Mitchum tries to prove he acted under insanity when he committed the crime. Barry Sullivan has the role of the commanding general who wants the defendant executed for his actions, and Trevor Howard is exellent in his portrayal of a British Army doctor trying to help Mitchum. Another often overlooked but very good WW 2 movie.

Under and Over on London Railways (23rd September 2018)
Under and Over on London Railways is this video's title, because it focuses on London Underground and London Overground.
Journey starts at Maidenhead on he Great Western Main Line and a journey on a Class 387 to Ealing Broadway to change from the GWML to the District Line to Acton Town to visit Acton Depot.
This trip to Acton Depot I wanted to plan for a while for at least 2 years. my first visit was in 2013 but wanted another trip at this place but kept on putting it off but the ONLY reason this trip happened was a hotel at a good price and a cheap train ticket from Kidderminster to Maidenhead.
During Acton Depot, we look at A60 Stock, 1967 Tube Stock, there a C Stock in the Depot and even buses, trams and Trolley buses.
After Acton Depot, I visited Chiswick Park, even know it was suppose to be Merton Park but left Acton Depot an hour later and did some filming at this Unerground station and after Chiswick Park I took the London Underground to Victoria and then travel on the Victoria Line to Highbury & Islington to take a Class 378 to Hoxton to do some sunset filming at this station.
After Hoxton I travelled to Kings Cross via Whitechapel and Aldagte East to hopefully see LNER A4 60009 Union of South Africa but it turned out to be a Class 33 Crompton which took it place and then I headed to London Euston to catch a train to Stonebridge Park and went to the hotel at London Wembley.
Also which is not in the video is that I got to meet Geoff Marshall at Acton Depot which is mentioned at the end of the video.

A drive from Horfield, Bristol, to Yate, on Christmas morning, 2010. The audio was recorded several days earlier.

This video - video one of two - begins with a look towards Paternoster Square, looking westwards on the north side of St. Paul's Cathedral. Nearby, at 8, Paternoster Row, were Aylott and Jones who had published Edward Miall's The Nonconformist's Sketch-Book in 1845 and Ethics of Nonconformity, and Workings of Willinghood in 1848. The Bronte sisters, under pseudonyms Currer (Charlotte), Ellis (Emily) and Acton (Anne) Bell, had a book of poetry published by Aylott and Jones, 8, Paternoster-Row in 1846, the first work published of any of the Bronte sisters.
Robert Theobald, father of Morell and William, later partners with Edward's son Arthur in the firm Theobald Brothers & Miall, was a publisher at 26, Paternoster Row. The Statement of Facts Connected With The Expulsion of Three Students from New College, London by Robert M. Theobald, brother of Morell and William, was published by his father Robert Theobald, 26, Paternoster Row in 1852. The three referred to were Robert Masters Theobald himself, William Hale White, writer under the pseudonym Mark Rutherford, and Frederic Meriton White, brother of Jessie White Mario, Hurricane Jessie, a revolutionary with regard to the Italian Risorgimento. Jessie was influenced in childhood by John Daniel Morell, cousin of Edward's wife and brother of Robert Theobald's wife, who had works published by Robert Theobald.
At 3:40 into the video is Temple Bar which used to stand were Fleet Street becomes the Strand at the western edge of the City. It was removed in 1878, re-erected in a park in Hertfordshire before being re-erected here in Paternoster Square in 2004. In the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens published in 1859, the fictional Tellson's Bank was situated by Temple Bar where the fictional Jeremiah (Jerry) Cruncher would sit on his stool and watch two immense processions of traffic. And Temple Bar would have frequently been seen by Edward Miall who had an office off Fleet Street.
At 8:40 into the video, walking along Ludgate Hill, I cross the Old Bailey, and about five doors west at 9:15 was approximately the entrance to Horse-Shoe-Court. And here there was Miall and Cockshaw, Printers, Horse-Shoe-Court, Ludgate-Hill which printed some of Edward Miall's works and The Nonconformist newspaper. Albert Cockshaw was proprietor of the Leicestershire Mercury from 1836 to 1840, which Edward contributed towards while in Leicester.
Continuing along Ludgate Hill I cross Ludgate Circus and Farringdon Street, arriving at the beginning of Fleet Street at 12:30. At 15:15 I come to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese tavern which presumably is the place where the fictional Charles Darnay 'dines' while the fictional Sydney Carton 'wines' after the trial at the Old Bailey. It may be in this tavern, in A Tale of Two Cities, where Carton says I am a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me. --From 15:30 can be read a list of many literary men who have visited here right outside the tavern. Almost directly opposite is Whitefriars Street where in the 1840s Edward Miall had an office at 3, Whitefriars Street, Fleet Street.
In his Life of Edward Miall published in 1884, Edward's son Arthur writes My father was living at this time [around 1841 to 1844] at Stoke Newington. It must have been the happiest time of his life. ... For three years, two or three days weekly, he walked to and from Stoke Newington Common to his office in Whitefriars Street, formerly known in older maps as Water Lane. At 16:45 I cross over Fleet Street from the tavern onto Whitefriars Street, and at 17:15 can be seen a blue plaque with the following words: On this site in the years 1844-1846 were situated the London offices of the Anti-Corn-Law League with which John Bright and Richard Cobden were so closely associated. In this time, in 1845, Edward stood in his first election in Southwark across the Thames, and leading up to this he was politically active with regard to the following trinity: (1) he campaigned to disestablish the Church of England, seeing it as a counterfeit Church upheld by the aristocratic class; (2) he supported the Free Trade movement led by Cobden and Bright of the middle class, and (3) he gave his support to the complete suffrage movement led by Joseph Sturge regarding the right to vote for the labouring class. --Regarding the latter, Edward wrote the Reconciliation Between The Middle and Labouring Classes, reprinted from The Nonconformist in Manchester as a pamphlet in 1842.
At 18:25 I come to the entrance of Hanging Sword Ally off Whitefriars Street where the fictional Jeremiah Cruncher lived in apartments that were not in a savoury neighbourhood. At 22:10 I look from Whitefriars Street across Fleet Street towards Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese tavern before proceeding westwards on Fleet Street towards Bouverie Street. --See video 2 @
