Marmaris Introduction Film
Marmaris
Once a sleepy fishing village, Marmaris has ballooned into one of the largest resorts on the Aegean coastof Turkey. Little of its history remains, as the town is now a modern development with tourism at its heart and soul. The population swells to a massive 200,000 in the summer, with most hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shops catering to low-cost package holidays, although there are facilities for all budgets.
Despite the development which reaches around 10km along the west of the bay, Marmaris is also well-known for its expanse of green, present the whole year round thanks to the pine-covered hills which surround the town. There are many beaches around the bay, and there are ancient cities and seaside villages close by for day trips. The yacht harbour is the biggest and newest in Turkey, and therefore the busiest charter port especially for trips along the Turquoise Coast.
In addition to the climate, beaches and facilities of the town, the transportation infrastructure is a definite plus for attracting visitors. It has easy connections to the nearby airport Dalaman, ferries to Rhodes, and on the road to Datca and Fethiye. The harbour has attracted by private boats from around the world, with yacht maintenance and production in the workshops on the Yalanci Strait. With the climate being comfortable even in winter, and the nearby impressive mountains and pine forests, Marmaris is likely to remain a popular and practical holiday spot for a long time.
History
It is thought that the first settlement in Marmaris, whose history dates back to 3400 BC, began with the arrival of a tribe in to the region, whose leader was called Kar. The area was then called Karla after him, and its location around the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas always made it an appealing region.
Suleyman the Magnificent assembled a force of 200,000 in 1522, whilst launching the siege of the Knights of St John's base in Rhodes (Rodos). Soon afterwards, he made the city more powerful with the rebuilding of the tiny castle overlooking the town. Lord Nelson and his entire fleet sheltered in the harbour in 1798, en route to Egypt to defeat Napoleon's armada at the Battle of Aboukir.
Marmaris therefore became a place where different civilisations reigned over time, and there is architectural and historical evidence of Egyptian, Asdur, Ion, Dor, Persian, Macedonian, Syrian, Roman, Byzantium, Seljuk and Ottoman presence.
Climate
Summers are extremely hot and dry, with daytime temperature reachs up to 35 degrees, and the winters are warm and wet, plunging to 5 degrees at night. The area is quite typical of a Mediterranean climate.
Mishaps and Mayhem - High winds and rolling seas - Sailing Kejstral Adventures S01E12
Sailing through the Cyclades, things constantly remind us that sailing is a never ending learning curve.
Mooring stern too in a 30 knot wind, even for experienced sailors can be a trial, and go completely wrong. We were not filming at the time, and aren't able to share the panic with you, we will try harder next time!
Hundreds and hundreds of teenagers and young people fill the Islands in this episode, most of them Island hopping, on and off ferries, giving us lots to enjoy watching and amuse at.
We tour the Islands by scooter and pick out the best bits to share, such as Homers Tomb, Greek dancing and beautiful villages that really should'nt be missed!

Entry Title: Is This Heaven ?
Entry:
Goodbye Selcuk, hello Yakakoy. Woohoo.. Well, after 10 weeks on the road most of which has been spent in hotels, hostels, private rooms and the like we were very very relieved to make it to the Goldstein Villa in the lovely village of Yaka (the 'koy' used at the end means village). Yaka is mainly an Olive (yum) and Almond (double yum) plantation village with two distinct harvesting times throughout the year. Fortunately we were there for the almond harvest and were looked after with copious amounts by the locals who were amazingly friendly and super adorable. Leyla and Gary Goldstein (Em Wilkin's folks) own a luxurious villa in the foothills behind Yaka with views over the village and surrounding hills and valleys and had graciously allowed the honeymooners to stay during their absence. The other town nearby (about 6kms) is the beach village of Palamut. It's a beautiful little beach frequented by holidaying Turks and the occasional westerners that have moored their yachts in the small harbour. The beach has sunbeds and umbrellas and is dotted with restaurants who cater to your every whim should you so desire. Exactly what the doctor ordered after so many weeks of being on the go fairly regularly. For 10 amazing days we simply bummed around the village doing a whole lot of nothing. We were able to unpack our backpacks completely to discover and wash clothes we forgot we had, find food we'd been carrying for weeks and were finally able to cook or dispose of. We had access to cable TV with ENGLISH language movies, news, gossip shows but sadly no Survivor or The Amazing Race. We had a PC with an U.S. ENGLISH keyboard which enabled us to catchup somewhat on the Travelpod entries. We even had a pet cat for the duration of our stay. Yes, we had all the modcons which was just what the doctor ordered. Each day we'd getup around 9am, have some cornflakes (a real treat for us), whack on our togs and catch the local dolmus (minibus) down to Palamut beach (5 minutes) where we'd claim our usual possie right by the water and do nothing but swim and read all day long. Well we would move about 10 metres to go eat but that was about it. By around 5pm we'd make the slow 15 metre walk to the road where the dolmus would pick us up and ferry us back to Yaka for a home cooked meal and a glass of wine at the villa. Man, days are tough in Yaka. In fact to be honest nothing of real interest to anyone other than us happened for our whole time in Yaka. Well actually there was one thing that Kat finds amusing but understandbly I don't. It was our last day in Yaka and we were making our usual trip to the beach on the Dolmus. It was particularly packed on this day and we were sardined in down the back with a medium sized family and their beach gear who must've come in from Datca for the day. As you can imagine it was hot, smelly and a lack of air didn't add to the fun. So I'm minding my own business and sitting down next to me on her fathers lap is a cute little girl with a strange look on her face. I'm searching the archives thinking, 'I've seen that look before but where was it, hmmmmmmmm'. Then it suddenly strikes me, but before I could move, vomitfest 2006 had begun. The little girl lets rip all over me, her father and brother. The brother then let rips over all and sundry and to top things off, someone who I think was the cousin decided she wanted a piece of the action. Again I'm dry retching and searching my soul and praying to the lord above so I don't join in the fun whilst Kat's got her head out the window sucking in the deep ones. My god, I have no idea why these kids decide it's fine to upchuck all over me but rest assured I avoid the little buggers like the plague now. Parents, please starve your children before putting them on any forms of transport, particularly if you know I'm in the local vacinity and will be using any public transport. So that's Yakakoy - Palamut in a nutshell. A truly amazing place not in the guide books (THANK GOD!!!!) in which we were able to really enjoy some real piece and quiet and downtime as a ...

Types and History of Gulets
The history of gulets is somewhat veiled in secrecy. It remains uncertain how gulets got their name - whether it comes from the Italian guletta or the French word goullette. This schooner type of vessel used to be used as a sweeping net, trawl net or sponging vessel in Turkey in the Aegean and Mediterranean.
Origin of the name
Other resources also claim that it resembles the American Gullet used in ling fishing in the Greenland banks whereas some claim it resembles the clippers carrying goods from India to England in the periods of colonization.
Today's gulets
Gulets we know today are known as the Bodrum type of schooners. They date back to the beginning of 1970s when they were created as a result of the need to carry tourists who began visiting the Aegean region and especially Bodrum and Marmaris at the end of 1960s, to nearby bays. These gulets had chambers and seating on the back of the deck as opposed to gulets used in fishing or sponging till those years.
Types of charter gulets
There are two charter gulet types - private gulet charter and cabin charter. Private gulet charter offers you ultimate comfort and privacy as well as great flexibility in terms of menu, itinerary, and provisioning. Charter gulet's crew is completely dedicated to you and your party.
Cabin gulet charter is a cheaper and more convenient alternative to chartering the entire boat since you do not have to have company to charter a cabin. This is a pleasurable way of vacationing that gives you the opportunity to meet different people. However, you do not have complete freedom since the itineraries and ports of embarkation and disembarkation are fixed and cannot be altered.

Turkey Foca
