Akumal Bay snorkeling tour - Mayan Riviera
Akumal Bay snorkeling tour - Mayan Riviera. The 2 best snorkeling tours we have taken were from the Sandos Playacar and the Barcelo Maya Beach resorts in the Mayan Riviera.
Akumal bay is about a 30 minute boat ride from the Barcelo Maya Beach resort and along with a wide variety of tropical fish along the reef, it is also possible to see sea turtles up close.

Tour & Reviews of Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya,,Cancun. Mexico 2019
This hotel is just amazing. The architecture of the buildings, the décor of the rooms, the furnishings on the beach are simple, classy, beautiful and tasteful. And comfortable. This made our stay a pleasure. There are a lot of things to point out, so I'll try to make it simple and organised, and rank things in order from where they are closer to perfection to where they might benefit from improvements.
1 - THE POOLS. These are fabulous. There are three, each different and all outstanding. They all have great design, shape (lots of nooks and curves), features (steps, seats), temperature, and are build with a great material, a textured concrete that resembles rough granite and is pleasant to the touch and anti-slip. The first pool is closest to the beach. This has a bar in it, accessible from the water only, and is the busiest and noisiest pool, with music and activities on and off. The second pool is very close to the first and further in from the beach. This one is similar in appearance but a bit quieter. In both of these pools the surface material is light grey which gives the pools' water a light blue/green colour similar to the water in the sea (see later). The third pool is furthest in, much quieter, with a darker surface material which makes it a deeper blue, more similar to a tropical inland lagoon than an open beach. We used all three every day, kind of moving along them during the day as we retreated to our room.
2 - GARDENS. Stunning and with some wild-life (coati, agouti, iguanas etc).
3 - ROOMS. Rooms are great. Spacious, tasteful, well-lighted, comfortable, clean. Nice bathroom, with a large Jacuzzi and a large shower: stone glass and wood everywhere. We had an amazing terrace with couch, table and chairs, and a huge built-in planter.
4 - BEACH. Blue water, great sand, superb furnishings and service. There are algae in parts of the sea-bottom, and this can be a nuisance and make the water in patches darker, but the huge bonus is that this makes the location a great spot for sea-turtles. There are (fenced-off) turtle nests in several spots on the beach, and a few snorkelling explorations will almost certainly lead to encountering one of these amazing animals. We bumped into one at our first attempt and stayed watching her for twenty minutes while she was peacefully grazing on seaweed and swimming periodically upwards to breathe. Worth the whole trip in itself.
4 - SERVICE AND STAFF. Flawless.
5 - FOOD AND DRINKS. Drinks are good quality, with proper ingredients (branded spirits), generally better than in similar resorts of the all-inclusive variety. Now the food. We find that two weeks in a resort will lead to generally getting tired with the food offering: although the level here was generally good, this was in the end the case here too and I was longing for some of my own home-cooked food. My advice to the management would be to take much greater advantage of the great opportunity offered by the fact that the resort is in Mexico (Mexican cuisine is great!). There is a Mexican restaurant but after 3-4 visits you have basically exhausted the menu, and then what? Two poolside restaurants that have great settings, but average food; and other restaurants (Italian, French, Asian) which are rather enclosed and not too true to their inspiring cuisines. I wish everything were simpler, fresher, and less fussy (cut the mayo please). I do not think people should go to all-inclusive resorts for high-end meals, but for flawless ones, which can take repeated visits. A favourite for us became the frequent, but unpredictable, al fresco buffet-style feasts. And breakfast!
All in all we had a great time and would visit again
Akumal, Mexico: A Beautiful Beach on the Riviera Maya
Just north of Tulum on Mexico’s Riviera Maya is the small beach community of Akumal. The beach curves gently around a small cove, which is home to endangered sea turtles who munch on the abundant sea grass.
You can snorkel and watch the turtles, as well as other sea creatures like manta rays and dozens of tropical fish—including parrotfish, pork fish, blue tangs, and barracuda. On shore you can enjoy the soft white sand, sitting in the shade of palm trees, and lunch at one of the open-air beach restaurants that face the water.
There are a few hundred expats in Akumal. But most beachgoers are day-trippers coming from the larger resort areas of the Riviera Maya or guests at the small number of hotels in Akumal itself.

*Cómo llegar a Akumal
