Al-Ula Treasures: How the site of Mada’in Saleh paved the historic Incense Route
Mada’in Saleh, also called “Al-Hijr” or “Hegra”, was the first Saudi site listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its huge historical significance.
Mentioned in the Holy Quran, many religions and peoples coexisted in its land for peoples of civilizations throughout history.
The area of Mada’in Saleh stretches about sixty hectares, and what is known on the surface is only a fraction of the treasures buried under the land. These immortal features made by the former Nabataeans who settled around this region between the first century BC and the first after AD are only the highlights of the civilization who ruled the land at the time.

Sheikh Hamdan (فزاع Fazza) Al Ula, Medain Saleh (Hegra) Saudi Arabia(1 February, 2019)
#MedainSaleh (Arabic: مدائن صالح, madāʼin Ṣāliḥ, Cities of Saleh), also called Al-Hijr or Hegra, is an archaeological site located in the Sector of Al`Ula within Al Madinah Region, the Hejaz, Saudi Arabia. A majority of the remains date from the Nabatean kingdom (1st century CE). The site constitutes the kingdom's southernmost and largest settlement after Petra, its capital. Traces of Lihyanite and Roman occupation before and after the Nabatean rule, respectively, can also be found.
In 2008, UNESCO proclaimed Mada'in Saleh as a site of patrimony, becoming Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Site. It was chosen for its well-preserved remains from late antiquity, especially the 131 rock-cut monumental tombs, with their elaborately ornamented façades, of the Nabatean kingdom.

Tour in Mada'in Saleh, Saudi Arabia || One of the greatest attractions in the World
Madain Saleh or Al Hijr is located 22 kilometers to the north-east of Al Ula municipality of Al Madina Al Munawarrah province in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at latitude 4726 north and longitude 5337 east, and it was called Al Hijr since the ancient times. It occupies a strategic position on the ancient trade route that links the southern Arabia, Mesopotamia, Levant, and Egypt.
The ancient trade rout in Al Hijr that emanates in the south of Arabian Peninsula divides into two branches, one heading to the north passing through Tabuk ends in Petra in Jordan, which was the political capital of Nabataea, while the second branch heads towards Mesopotamia through Tayma in the north of Arabia. This important strategic location has made Madain Saleh an important trading city of Nabataea and a significant economic destination for the trade caravans.
Madain Saleh is an ancient pre-Islamic archeological site in Saudi Arabia. It was the land of Thamud in the Wadi Al Qura, Valley of Villages, lying between Madina and Tabuk. Al Hijr is also known as Madain Saleh, the Saleh’s village. The site was mentioned in Torah (the old statement) of the Holy Bible, and the Holy Quran with reference to Prophet Saleh (PBUH). The Holy Quran stated that, the people of Thamud had met their doom because they refused the call of Prophet Saleh to obey God's Will after they slaughtered the she-camel that was sent to them as a divine sign from God.
Archeologists Views:
According to archeologists, Al Hijr was inhabited by Maeneans and Thamudians in the third millennium BC. Prior to them the place was occupied by the Lihyanite in the 9th century BC. Nabataeans invaded the state and subdued the Lihyanite, and used stone structure as their houses, temples and tombs. According to the found inscriptions, Nabataeans were the real builders of Al Hijr. Al Hijr contains a great deal of Maeneans and Lihyanites inscriptions that refer to Al Ula, Khoraiba and Hiania, as the oldest towns, dating back to around 1700 BC. Some of these places were destroyed by earthquakes according to the established literature. As for Al Hijr city's antiquities, they belong to Maeneans and the early Thamud traders, who had moved into it from the south of Arabian Peninsula.
In 2008, UNESCO's World Heritage Committee (WHC) agreed on Madain Saleh site to join the World Heritage List. Thus, the site has become the first archeological site in Saudi Arabia to be enlisted by the WHC of the UNESCO.
The remains of Madain Saleh show the remarkable work of its engineers. More than 131 big tombs were found carved out of huge sandstone mounds, standing singly amidst a world of wavy sands, but some of these are in a state of decomposition. When you arrive at this archeological city, to the west of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between Tabuk and Al Madina, around afternoon, you will see the scene of the golden hill behind it, far away is laid the Harat Awaired with its volcanic land. It is one of the most stunning scenes in the Arabian Peninsula. The names engraved on the landmarks belong to the local Bedouins tribes.

The Archaeological Site of Al-Hijr (Madâin Sâlih) is the first World Heritage property to be inscribed in Saudi Arabia. Formerly known as Hegra it is the largest conserved site of the civilization of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. It features well-preserved monumental tombs with decorated facades dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The site also features some 50 inscriptions of the pre-Nabataean period and some cave drawings. Al-Hijr bears a unique testimony to Nabataean civilization. With its 111 monumental tombs, 94 of which are decorated, and water wells, the site is an outstanding example of the Nabataeans’ architectural accomplishment and hydraulic expertise.

Madain Saleh is a 5000 years old city of people of Thamuds (قومِ ثمود). ALLAH sent Hazrat Saleh A.S to preach them the true path. But they denied.
When ALLAH decided to punish them , He destroyed them by earth quake and lightning.
Thamuds were very strong and brilliant in carving out homes in the mountains.

Mada'in Saleh (Arabic: مدائن صالح, madāʼin Ṣāliḥ), also called Al-Hijr or Hegra, is a pre-Islamic archaeological site located in the Al-Ula sector, within the Al Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia.[1] A majority of the vestiges date from the Nabatean kingdom (1st century AD).[2] The site constitutes the kingdom's southernmost and largest settlement after Petra, its capital.[3][4] Traces of Lihyanite and Roman occupation before and after the Nabatean rule, respectively, can also be found.[4]
The Qur’an places settlement of the area by the Thamud people after Noah but before Moses. According to the Islamic text, the Thamudis, who carved out homes in the mountains, were punished by Allah for their practice of idol worship, being struck by an earthquake and lightning blasts.[5] Thus, the site has earned a reputation as a cursed place — an image which the national government is attempting to overcome as it seeks to develop Mada'in Saleh for its tourism potential.[1][5]

Understand[edit]
A Nabataean city hewed out of rock in the same style as Jordan's far more famous Petra, Madain Saleh is on UNESCO's tentative list for World Heritage inclusion [3] and would be a top tourist draw in any other country than Saudi Arabia. As it is, though, access to the site is fairly difficult and many Muslims refuse to enter the area because it was narrated in Bukhari [4] that when the Prophet Muhammad passed by this area, he told his Companions, Do not enter the dwelling places of those who wronged themselves, lest there befall you what befell them, unless you are weeping. There is also a section in the Qur'an (Al-Hijr 15:80) that explains the story of these houses.

Get in[edit]
A permit is necessary for visiting Madain Saleh (however some tourists claim that they were allowed in based on their ID only). Tour operators or hotels will usually arrange these on your behalf but you need to apply at least one week in advance. You can do it yourself at the Saudi Commission Of Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) localized in the Diplomatic Quarters.[5].
TIP: If you have your reservation with Al Ula ARAC Resort you shall call Mr. Ahmed Salah 0568565391 and he will arrange the permit for you free of charge.
By plane[edit]
There are two weekly flights to AlUla airport operated by Saudi Airlines now. The airport is located around 15km South East from AlUla town.
Other airports are in Al Wajh (220 km) and Medina (300 km, and yes, the airport is open to non-Muslims). Until 2004, visitors usually traveled via Hail (400 km), but a new road from Al Wajh now makes that route considerably faster.
By car[edit]
The nearest town of any size is Al-Ula (or Al-Oula), 22 km away from Madain Saleh. Saptco runs direct buses to Al-Ula from major towns including Jeddah (8 hrs) and Riyadh (13.5 hours).
Get around[edit]
See[edit][add listing]
A restored Hijaz Railway station can be found on the northern side of the city.
Facilities all set up and ready for tourists (as of 2000 anyway), but LOCKED tight as a drum! Travel around inside as much as possible, there are many little interesting things to see. Use of steel sleepers stolen from the railway for all sorts of agricultural uses, and so on.

Trip to the historical Al- Ula Madain Saleh Saudi Arabia
Madain Saleh-was selected as one of UNESCOS historic heritage sites, making it the first World Heritage property to be inscribed in Saudi Arabia. Attributed to prophet SALEH as Al Hijr. described as a region carved from mountain and rocks.
Madain e Saleh - Inside the Tombs, Saudi Arabia
My Trip to Madain e Saleh on 2nd August 2012 (13th day of Ramazan), 20 KMs from Al-Ula district in Saudi Arabia - These are the ruins of Nabatean breed known in an Islamic context the 'People oV Samud' . Ruins of such architect are found in Petra, Jordan, too. Signifying that Nabatean breed had settlements in Saudi Arabian region even though the roots Nabatean Kingdom could be traced back to Petra, Jrdan.
However there is an issue here which confuses it is commonly known in Islamic context that they 'People oV Smud' were huge people approx more then 30+ feet or perhaps above, but when I went inside the ruins (which you can see me filming) I could hardly stand straight the tombs wre just above 6 Feet plus. And also look at the sizes of shelves (in the film) they seemed to be ov pretty much the same human made shelves of average norms. The point here i am making is if they were huge then their utensils of daily use should als be huge like mugs, cups, plates etc etc and shelves should also be oV huge sizes to put them in shelves but howeer its not like that.....anyways it was a fun trip and not to mention tht the day was scorching and we were not abserving fast on that day as we knew that the temprature would soar on that day 45 degree Celcius plus and it was in mid oV July 2012 !!!
