whale watching in Albany, Western Australia
Winter brings the annual migration of whales from Antartica to the warmer waters of Australia for mating and calving. Albany has a number of charter boats that operate from the city's harbour. Weather depending they leave at 9.30 am for a cruise that lasts several hours. Humpback whales are the first to arrive for the season and being quite inquisitive may come up to the boat. A moratorium on hunting humpback whales in Australia came into effect in 1963 ( ref: DoEE ) after the population dwindled to around 5,000 animals world wide, today there are about 80,000 humpback whales where other large marine animals and fishing nets are their biggest concerns. As humpback whales are mammals, the female ( which is larger than the male and grows to around 16 metres ) will carry her baby for a year to give birth in warmer waters. She will provide around 50,000 litre of milk which is especially rich in fat and proteins for her calf losing around a quarter of her body weight to feed the calf. By spring the calf is big enough to begin the perilous jorney south to the rich feeding grounds of the Antartic returning to the same place their mother came from. Humpback's are known for the distinct song the males produce which can last up to 20 minutes, and each population cluster has its own particular song which changes slowly over several years. They grow up to around 30 tons which makes them as heavy as our large road train trucks you see on the road! Truly amazing creatures to ses up close.

Followed 3 humpbacks for a while traveling from the tip of Breaksea Island to Bald Head, moving fairly quickly, only 1 breach that i missed filming. We had a pod of dolphins playing around the boat earlier with a loan small humpback but they were too fast to get any good shots.

Whale Watching, Albany 2015
Where to watch Whale in Western Australia? Well this video might give you an idea. In August 2015, a friend of mine visited from Indonesia and I decided to take him down to Albany for a weekend trip. I've been here a numerous time before but this is the first time I actually went on the cruise. We decided to go with Albany Ocean Adventures ( which was a good decision. It was an amazing day, blue sky, it's a bit windy but all in all was a perfect weather. The boat has two level, depend on your preference and has an covered area to keep you away from the wind. They served morning tea as we depart and the crew were friendly and fun! We cruised around until we came accros few group of whales. I attached my go pro to a long stick and submerge it underwater. The whale came so close to the boat that I managed to capture the whale on camera. It was...... WOW! hard to believe.
