Solo Overnight | Paddling Opeongo Lake - Algonquin Park
Two Day Solo Paddle Across Opeongo Lake - Algonquin Park, Ontario - Canada.
Opeongo Lake is the biggest lake in Algonquin Provincial Park, it has been a goal of mine to paddle across it since I was introduced to backcountry camping there almost a decade ago. With a few free days early July, I set out with my dogs to conquer it's famously stormy waters.

Solo 5-day Canoe Camping Trip at Algonquin Park – Day 1: Taxi on Opeongo Lake
Algonquin Park in Ontario has been on my bucket list for three years now, and I finally went on an extended canoe camping trip for 4 nights! What an amazing place! After a 5+ hour drive from Montreal, I made it to Algonquin Outfitter and took a water taxi (yes, there is such a thing!!) to my first camping location on the north end of Opeongo Lake. As the boat slowly disappeared, I was left alone in complete silence, which was only interrupted by the occasional haunting calls of the loons. The sunset and beautiful moonrise made this first evening very special, and I felt myself relax and sink into the experience after this long trip. The adventure was just beginning, and I couldn’t wait to see what this place has in store for me over the next few days!

Algonquin Camping - The Island Experience
A musically charged trip with the boys to one of Algonquin's islands. We used the Canon Vixia HF S20 with its DM-100 microphone and Sony Vegas for editing.
Driving from Toronto, we entered the park throught it's west gate and drove along Highway 60. Had to take a 6-km detour north of Hwy 60 to get to the Opeongo Lake Outfitters (km 46). There we rented the aluminum canoe, the paddles and vests. There are several Access Points throughtout the park, allowing overnight campers into the backcountry. We got off the highway at #10 (km 40) and drove on the gravel road for a few minutes until we couldn't go any further. Down the hill into a short but steep portage that took us to Sunday Lake.
Once at the island we just relaxed and enjoyed the perfect weather to the fullest. Temps were down to 5C at night but very comfortable during the day.
The last scenes in the video were shot during the Lookout Trail hike (km 39).
