Safari in the Kingdom of Eswatini (Swaziland)
Eswatini (Swaziland) offers some of the best encounters with rhinos in Africa. We saw no less than thirteen of these incredible creatures during our 36-hour foray into the kingdom. We visited three of Swaziland's premier game parks on a whistle-stop tour, but the country warrants so much more than just an overnight visit. We're just going to have to go back!⠀

Reed Dance Ceremony in Swaziland
Reed Dance Ceremony in Swaziland
►Read the blog:
The reed dance is a tradition dating back to the 1940s, during which tens of thousands of unmarried women from around Swaziland gather to participate in an 8-day event at the Queen Mother’s Royal Residence. As part of the tradition, the girls cut reeds and carry them back to the Royal Residence where they are used as windbreakers for the perimeter.
The seventh day of the Reed Dance is a national holiday and is when King Mswati the Third participates. On this special day, the arena is filled with thousands of spectators who come to see the girls dancing and saluting the Queen Mother. The King's many daughters and royal princesses also participate in the reed dance ceremony and are distinguished by the crown of red feathers they wear in their hair.
His Majesty can be seen making his rounds to salute the girls as they cheer him on. Some years, the King selects a wife to join his family growing. Currently he has 15 wives. His father before him had 70.
The Reed Dance is undeniable one of Africa’s most fascinating cultural events.

Indlamu izingoma Swaziland Reed Dance Festival
Swaziland’s best known cultural event, and has a more open feel than the Incwala. In this eight-day ceremony, young girls cut reeds, present them to the Queen Mother (Indlovukazi) – ostensibly to repair the windbreak around her royal residence – and then dance in celebration. Up to 40,000 girls take part, dressed up in brightly coloured attired – making it one of the biggest and most spectacular cultural events in Africa.
The proper festivities kick off on day six, when dancing gets under way in the afternoon. Each group drops their reeds outside the Queen Mother’s quarters then moves to the main arena, where they dance and sing their songs. The dancing continues on day seven, when the king is present. This is the main day that most visitors attend. Each regiment dances before him in turn.
Little can prepare you for the sheer scale of the pageantry, with column upon column of girls advancing like vast ululating centipedes across the parade grounds of Ludzidzini, each dissolving in turn into the pulsating mass of bodies around the royal kraal. Up close, it’s an almost overwhelming immersion in noise and colour, as the girls stamp, sing and sway in step, anklets rattling, naked flesh and dazzling costume blurring into a living, chanting kaleidoscope. The warrior escorts, adorned with cow tails and clutching knob-stick and shield, are sternly intent on their duties and seem contemptuous of tourists, but the girls are all smiles. It’s Eswatini’s biggest holiday and, after days of tramping the hillsides, cutting reeds and camping out, they’re determined to party.
Today the Umhlanga is as well attended as ever. Indeed cultural historians marvel at how its ever-increasing popularity in Eswatini defies the apparent decline of traditional culture elsewhere. It offers the visitor a unique experience. There are no special visitor arrangements – except for a special grandstand to accommodate visiting dignitaries – but simply turn up at Ludzidizini and follow the crowds (Day 7 is the main day). Police will direct you where to go, and where to park.
The event takes place around the last week of August / first week of September in the Lobamba area, next to the Ezulwini Valley. The dates for the 2019 Umhlanga Reed Dance have now been confirmed. The festival will start on Tuesday 27th August, with day 7 (main day) falling on Monday 2nd September.Once a year, in the heart of South Africa's Kingdom of the Zulu, thousands of people make the long journey to one of His Majesty’s, the King of the Zulu nation's royal residence at KwaNyokeni Palace. Here, in Nongoma, early every September month, young Zulu maidens will take part in a colourful cultural festival, the Royal Reed Dance festival - or Umkhosi woMhlanga in the Zulu language.
For visitors to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa's most popular tourist destination, the Reed Dance festival offers the unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and majesty of the Kingdom of the Zulu, combined with the vibrant spectacle of Zulu cultural life. The road to the Reed Dance festival runs north from the city of Durban, and winds through the green lushness of the North Coast sugar-belt, skirting through the Kingdom's world-renowed wildlife reserves of Zululand and Maputaland.
Finally, it leads into the gently rolling hills and valleys of Zululand, a landscape rich with the silent memories of the heroic clashes of the Anglo-Zulu War, which took place more than 100 years ago.
Steeped in the history of the rise of the Zulu kingdom under the great King Shaka, the Reed Dance festival has been tirelessly celebrated by countless generations, and attracts thousands of visitors from throughout the country and from across the world. A dignified traditional ceremony, the Reed Dance festival is at same time a vibrant, festive occasion, which depicts the rich cultural heritage of the Kingdom of the Zulu and celebrates the proud origin of the Zulu people

Pandemonium broke loose at Mvutjini area in Ezulwini, when public operators servicing the Mbabane-Lobamba route blocked all public vehicles from transporting passengers to and from Mbabane. Both conductors and drivers are aggrieved about the huge traffic fines police impose on them.
Swaziland culture and people - Reed dance ceremony
The reed dance attracts young maidens and young men from across the Kingdom and foresters the unity of clans which characterizes the modern Swaziland as devoid of tribal differences.

Tourists visiting the annual Reed Dance are allowed to take photographs on Days 6 and 7 (main day) – as the maidens walk to deliver the reeds to the Royal Residence, and then as they dance in the main arena. Photography at other times is restricted to accredited members of the media, who can check the Media Accreditation section on this page for further information.
Reed Dance Schedule
Day One
The girls gather at the Queen Mother’s royal village. Today this is at Ludzidzini, in Sobhuza’s time it was at Lobamba. They come in groups from the 200 or so chiefdoms and are registered for security. Men, usually four, supervise them, appointed chiefs. They sleep in the huts of relatives in the village or in classrooms of nearby schools. This is a very exciting time for the maidens.
Day Two
The girls are separated into two groups, the older (about 14 to 22 years) and the younger (about 8 to 13 years). In the afternoon, they march to the reed-beds with their supervisors. The older girls often march about 30 kilometres, while the younger girls march about ten kilometres. If the older girls are sent further, government will provide trucks for their transport.
Day Three
The girls cut their reeds, usually about ten to twenty, using long knives. Each girl ties her reeds into a bundle. Nowadays they use strips of plastic for the tying, but those mindful of tradition will still cut grass and plaint it into rope.
Day Four
In the afternoon, the girls set off to return to the Queen Mother’s village, carrying their bundles of reeds. Again they return at night. This is done “to show they traveled a long way.”
Day Five
A day of rest where the girls make final preparations to their hair and dancing costumes. After all that walking, who doesn’t deserve a little pampering?
Day Six
First day of dancing, from about three to five in the afternoon. The girls drop their reeds outside the Queen Mother’s quarters. They move to the arena and dance, keeping their groups and each group singing different songs at the same time.
Day Seven
Second and last day of dancing. His Majesty the King will be present.
Day Eight
King commands that a number of cattle (perhaps 20 -25) be slaughtered for the girls. They receive pieces of meat and go home.
2018 Umhlanga Reed Dance
The Umhlanga Reed Dance is a traditional dance and ceremony where up to 40 000 Swazi maidens gather and dance for the Queen Mother. This Swazi cultural event is performed as a tribute to the Royal Family and dates back centuries in time. Taking place over a week, normally the last in August, it is largely private, however its final two public days (normally a Sunday and Monday) are a spectacle that is unrivalled in Africa today. Thousands upon thousands of maidens dress up in brightly coloured attire and sing, dance together as they deliver the reed or umlanga to the Royal Residence. Their enjoyment of this ceremony is quite apparent as they use the opportunity of bonding with girls of similar ages from across the country.

In_Swaziland입니다!!

If theres one place I would call my childhood garden, then it is Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania and in particular, Sheba`s Breast in Swaziland.
I have climbed and played around this mountain most of my youth.
This song is a dedication, to all the people who crossed my road in my childhood garden.

Lyrics:
Oh I call….I call your name.
But you just dont want to listen
Oh I call
But you have gone away
Come back and speak to me….
So many people came into my life
I dedicate this song…to you
Were gonna climb up Sheba`s Breast
The view has changed, but its still the best
Picture in my mind.
Oh I call…I call your name
Bring me back to my childhood garden
Days of play
Why have you gone away
My lush green childhood garden.
So many people came into my life
I dedicate this song…to you
Were gonna climb up Sheba`s Breast
The view has changed, but its still the best
Picture in my mind.
Were gonna climb up
Were gonna climb up Sheba`s Breast tonight
Were gonna climb up
Were gonna climb up Sheba`s Breast tonight.
Follow me….and we will climb again
Up to our childhood garden.
So many people came into my life
I dedicate this song…to you
Were gonna climb up Sheba`s Breast
The view has changed, but its still the best.
Were gonna climb up Sheba`s Breast
The view has changed, but its still the best.
