Places to see in ( St Ives - UK )
St Ives is a market town and civil parish in Cambridgeshire, England. St Ives lies about 5 miles east of Huntingdon and 12 miles north-west of the city of Cambridge. St Ives is situated within the non-metropolitan district of Huntingdonshire, which covers a similar area to the historic county of the same name.
Previously called Slepe, its name was changed to St Ives after the body, claimed to be that of a Persian bishop, of Saint Ivo (not to be confused with Ivo of Kermartin), was found buried in the town in about 1001/2. Original historical documents relating to St Ives, including the original parish church registers, local government records, maps and photographs, are held by Cambridgeshire Archives and Local Studies at the County Record Office in Huntingdon.
St Ives experienced town planning at a very early date, giving it a spacious Town Centre. Portions of this open space between Merryland and Crown Street were lost to market stalls that turned into permanent buildings. Some of the shops in the town centre are still to the same layout as in Medieval times, one rod in width, the standard length for floor and roof joists. The lanes along the north side of town are believed to follow the layout of the narrow medieval fields, and are slightly S-shaped because of the way ploughs turned at each end. Similar field boundaries can be seen in Warners Park.
As an important market town, St Ives always needed large numbers of public houses: 64 in 1838 (1 for every 55 inhabitants), 60 in 1861, 48 in 1865 and 45 in 1899, although only five of these made the owners a living. As livestock sales diminished, however, so did the need for large numbers of pubs, falling to a low point of 16 in 1962. In that year the Seven Wives on Ramsey Road was opened and, with some openings and closings since, there are 17 today. The pub which has stood on the same site, with the same name, for longest, is the Dolphin, which is over 400 years old. Next oldest is the White Hart, which is pre-1720. Nelson's Head and Golden Lion are at least as old but have not kept the same name and used to be called the Three Tuns and the Red Lion respectively. The existence of a pub on the site of the Robin Hood is also of a similar date, except that it was originally two separate pubs — the Angel and the Swan. The claim of the Royal Oak to date from 1502 cannot be proven since, while a portion at the back is 17th-century (making it physically the oldest portion of any pub in St Ives), the pub name is more recent. The reference is to Charles II's famous escape from Cromwell's Roundheads, and Charles was restored to the throne in 1660.
St Ives Bridge is most unusual in incorporating a chapel, the most striking of only four examples in England. Also unusual are its two southern arches which are a different shape from the rest of the bridge, being rounded instead of slightly gothic. The eastern or town end of Holt Island is nature reserve, and the western end, opposite the parish church, is a facility for the Sea Scouts. The scout portion contains what was, before the opening of the Leisure Centre, the town's outdoor town swimming pool.
The major section of the world's longest guided busway, using all new construction techniques and technology, connects St Ives directly to Cambridge Science Park on the outskirts of Cambridge. St Ives is just off the A14 road on a particularly congested section of the route from the UK's second city, Birmingham, to the port of Felixstowe and thence to the mainland of Europe. The town name is featured in the anonymous nursery rhyme/riddle As I was going to St Ives. While sometimes claimed to be St Ives, Cornwall, the man with seven wives, each with seven sacks containing seven cats etc. may have been on his way to (or coming from) the Great Fair at St Ives.

All Saints, Jesus Lane, Cambridge - Victorian gothic beauty
All Saints is a Victorian gothic masterpiece designed by George Frederick Bodley. Built 1863-1864 with a second phase in 1869-1871. The slender spire soars above Cambridge and is still the third tallest structure in the City. Bodley designed All Saints as a harmonious whole with simple, elegant architecture overlaid by sumptuous and rich wall painting. Glass was provided by William Morris, Edward Burne Jones and Ford Madox Brown. Decorations were by Charles Eamer Kempe.
GF Bodley dominated ecclesiastical architecture for the following fifty years and completed more than 100 projects. His work includes Washington National Cathedral and St George's Cathedral, Hobart.
All Saints was declared redundant in 1973 but was saved by a determined and well organised friends group. It is now cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust. This film was made as The CCT were preparing to launch new interactives for visitors in April 2016. A few of the technicians inadvertently appear in the film in addition to Gill
Please visit The CCT website to learn more about All Saints, Cambridge.
Filmed in only fifteen minutes and all hand held! Apologies for any wobbly camera work. The film is accompanied by the organ playing 'Horbury', a hymn tune best known for 'Nearer my God to thee'. This was probably the version played by the band on the Titanic.

When this recording was made the organ was in need of restoration, which has since taken place. The organ by Forster and Andrews was commissioned for the church in 1864 and has undergone very little alteration since that time.
This project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund recorded programmes of music on 44 historic organs in East Anglia for a permanent online archive accessible through the National Pipe Organ Register (NPOR). On YouTube you will find one recording from each venue with a link back to the NPOR. You can also find out more about the organs and the music recorded from the Sound Archives section of the NPOR.

Cornwall at its best.
Apologies if the footage is a little wobbly and unprofessional, this was my first ever time using my new Laing P-04 Stabiliser.
(Clearly I need to practice with it)
Also, apologies is audio isn't great, it was a impulsive quick walk, so I hadn't brought a mic or a 'deadcat' with me.

*FULL RIDE* Stagecoach ride from Cambridge to Longstanton | 14/07/18
After a few hours in Cambridge we head back home on a Stagecoach (AE06 GZK) back to Longstanton via Bar Hill. The trip took around half a hour due to stopping at a varity of bus stops.
Longstanton info:
Longstanton is a village and civil parish in South Cambridgeshire, England, 6 miles (9.7 km) north-west of Cambridge city centre. Longstanton occupies 2,775 acres (1,123 ha). Longstanton was created in 1953 from the two parishes of Long Stanton All Saints and Long Stanton St. Michael. Although the village is called Longstanton, an alternative form Long Stanton can still be found in use today particularly when referring to the separate pre-1953 parishes or to the current ecclesiastical parish.
History:
For most of its history Longstanton was split into two parishes: the larger Long Stanton All Saints to the north and the smaller Long Stanton St. Michael to the south. The two may have been seen as distinct by 1086, when the Domesday Book referred to a Stantone and a Stantune, and were certainly so by 1240, distinguished in Liber Memorandorum Ecclesie de Bernewelle as Stanton and the other Stanton. The two villages were not formally amalgamated until 1953 and the two church parishes were permanently united in 1959.
The first known reference to the village, dating back to 1070 AD, calls the village Stantonia and describes it as an enclosed settlement of stoney ground. By the time of the Domesday Book Stantone was one of the most populous villages in the area, with 67 peasant tenants being recorded. By 1563 this had dwindled to 42 families, and the settlement had been overtaken in size by other nearby villages such as Chesterton. The population fluctuated between 400 and 600 for several centuries; in the 1901 census there were 340 inhabitants of Longstanton All Saints parish and 93 inhabitants of Longstanton St Michael's parish (population of Longstanton was 443).
The three open fields of Longstanton All Saints and of Longstanton St Michael's were inclosed in 1816.
The village was transformed by the opening of RAF Oakington in 1940, resulting in the building of three new housing estates in the village and a trebling of the population. Although the airfield was in Oakington, all of the hangars, housing and other buildings were in Longstanton. Two bomber squadrons operated from RAF Oakington for the rest of the Second World War. There was also a photographic reconnaissance unit and a meteorological unit for a time during the war. Following the end of the war, the airfield was used by transport squadrons until 1950 and then by air training schools. The cemetery at the church of Longstanton All Saints contains a number of graves of servicemen who died either during or after the war. The graves are tended by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
The site became an army barracks in 1975 and on its closure in 1999 most of the housing was sold to private owners. The barracks buildings were used from 2000 to 2010 as an Immigration Reception Centre by the Home Office.
Government:
Longstanton has its own civil parish council with ten parish councillors. Longstanton is represented on South Cambridgeshire District Council by one councillor and on Cambridgeshire County Council by one councillor for the Willingham electoral division. Longstanton is in the parliamentary constituency of South Cambridgeshire, represented at the House of Commons by Heidi Allen. For the European Parliament Longstanton is in the East of England (European Parliament constituency).
Geography:
The village itself lies on a low gravel ridge (approximately 10 metres (33 ft) to 14 metres (46 ft) above mean sea level) but most of the parish lies on West Walton formation and Amptill Clay formation mudstone.
It was first proposed in c.2003 that a substantial part of the land in the parish to the north and east of the village of Longstanton (including the brown-field site of the former RAF Oakington) would be used for the development of a new town called Northstowe. In 2012 outline planning consent was granted for the first phase of 1,500 houses, a new primary school and some local road improvements. The work to build a new primary school started in 2015.
Demography:
The population of the village was recorded at 1,700 living in 772 households in the 2001 census. The development of new housing at Home Farm started circa 2005 and the population had increased to 2,657 in 1,095 households in the 2011 census. In the census of 2011, 92.4% of people described themselves as white, 2.0% as having mixed or multiple ethnic groups, 4.6% as being Asian or British Asian, and 1.0% as having another ethnicity. In that same census, 55.6% described themselves as Christian, 33.7% described themselves as having no religion, 6.5% did not specify a religion, 1.9% described themselves as Muslim, and 2.3% described themselves as having another religion.
Sywell, Mears Ashby & Sywell Reservoir Walk, Northamptonshire Walks, Route & Scenery
Sywell, Mears Ashby & Sywell Reservoir Walk was about 5.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a mainly field paths with a lakeside path and woodland path; plus some short roads and pavements. The walking was easy on level or gently undulating ground. Route finding was mostly easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. However, some field paths had been ploughed over, so some guesswork or walking around field edges was required. Some of the paths can be muddy after rain. Between Mears Ashby and Sywell Reservoir the route followed a section of the Northamptonshire Round long distance path. There were 3 stiles to negotiate and 1 gate to climb over.
Along the walk you visit: Sywell village and Mears Ashby Village; Sywell Reservoir and Sywell Country Park. Scenery includes: crop fields and woodland; the 13th century St Peter and St Paul Church in Sywell; All Saints Church in Mears Ashby; Sywell Reservoir and part of Sywell Country Park; lovely countryside dwellings. You may also see gulls, waterfowl and waders around Sywell Reservoir.
I did this walk with my wife Anne whilst on a combined cat sitting and Cambridgeshire walking holiday during September 2018. We drove from our holiday accommodation near St Ives, Cambridgeshire to the starting location of Sywell, Northamptonshire. We parked at the roadside near St Peter and St Paul Church, grid reference SP 821 671, which was also the start location of the walk.
