The Nepalese Honey That Makes People Hallucinate
Nepal’s Gurung people live mostly in small villages in the vast Annapurna mountain ranges. In this remote region, they practice an ancient tradition of honey hunting where they descend towering cliffs on handmade ladders, to harvest honey nestled under jagged overhangs.
In spring, the Gurung’s honey contains a rare substance called grayanotoxin from rhododendron flowers that’s known for its intoxicating effects. While some accounts say it’s a deadly poison, others refer to it as an aphrodisiac, powerful medicine, and a hallucinogenic drug.
VICE travelled deep into the Annapurna mountains to join a Gurung village on their spring hunt and understand Mad Honey's effects.

Nepal Annapurna: Search ends for surviving trekkers
Rescue teams in Nepal say that there are now no trekkers left stranded after completing their search for survivors of a devastating Himalayan storm.
The focus now is on recovering bodies buried in the snow, a government spokesman told the BBC.
It is unclear how many people may still be missing in the country's worst-ever trekking disaster.
At least 39 people are known to have died, and nearly 400 people have been rescued from the Annapurna trail.
It is the fifth day that Nepalese army and private helicopters have been searching the trail.
Officials say the rescue effort grew harder on Sunday because of worsening weather.
The BBC's Andrew North in Kathmandu says that in addition to finding bodies, the authorities are eager to improve the flow of information on those caught up in the disaster.
There are currently three different lists of the dead and survivors, being run by the army, the home ministry and Nepal's trekking association, and some people may have been counted twice. The authorities say they now want to create a single list.
Nepalese, Japanese, Israeli, Canadian, Indian, Slovak, Vietnamese and Polish trekkers are said to be among the dead.

Darjeeling, India (Part 4 of 4) The Toy Train & Gurkha Warriors
The Famous Toy Train in Darjeeling aka Queen of the Hills
As the guys I brought on tour were still doing their mountaineering course, I decided to ride the old stream engine in Darjeeling called affectionately The Toy Train. It sure takes a lot to keep those old steam engines going! On the train ride we stopped at a memorial for Gorkha soldiers and I visited a shop that displayed their famous knives called The Khukuri. Later I filmed a few people paragliding amongst the hills and mountains - Terry Hodgkinson
ABOUT THE TOY TRAIN:
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is lovingly called the Toy Train. The Toy Train ride is a romantic approach to the Himalayas, a mysterious region. The landscape can only be described as spectacular and the views of the Himalayan peaks breathtaking. The Darjeeling Toy Train is one of the most famous narrow (2 feet ) gauge trains.
The railway runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, the railway is about 78 kilometres (48 mi) long. Its elevation level varies from about 100 metres (328 ft) at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling. Four modern diesel locomotives handle most of the scheduled services: however the daily Kurseong-Darjeeling return service and the daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum (India's highest railway station) are handled by the vintage British-built B Class steam locomotive, DHR 778. The railway, along with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway, is listed as a Mountain Railways of India World Heritage Site. The headquarters of the railway is in the town of Kurseong.

STORYLINE:
Members of Nepal's mountaineering community held a memorial service and opened a condolence book to commemorate the death of Sir Edmund Hillary on Friday, the New Zealand adventurer who devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of this small South Asian nation.
Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, winning him renown as one of the greatest adventurers of the last century.
He died on Friday, at 88, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced in a statement that paid tribute to his courage, determination and humble personality.
He had been unwell for some time and died in hospital at about 9 am local time on Friday (2000 GMT on Thursday) from a heart attack, said a statement from the Auckland District Health Board, the medical authority in New Zealand's largest city.
A family spokesman said it had accepted the offer of a state funeral, on a date to be set.
In Kathmandu, government officials and fellow mountaineers held a memorial service in his honour at the Nepal Mountaineering Association in Katmandu.
Sir Edmund Hillary began a new era. After the death of the only remaining conqueror of Everest, it marks the end of this era, said Prithvi Gurung, Nepal's Tourism Minister.
Hillary's life was marked by grand achievements, high adventure, discovery, excitement, and by his personal humility.
He was humble to the point that he only admitted being the first man atop Everest long after the death of Norgay, the mountain guide with whom he stood arm in arm on the summit on May 29, 1953.
Hillary never forgot the small mountainous country that propelled him to worldwide fame, and revisited Nepal, where he became known as burra sahib, or big man for his 188-centimetre (6 ft. 2-inch) build, more than 120 times.
Without fanfare and without compensation, Hillary spent decades pouring energy and resources from his own fundraising efforts into Nepal through the Himalayan Trust he founded in 1962, building hospitals, health clinics, airfields and schools.
He raised funds for higher education for Sherpa families and helped set up reforestation programmes in the impoverished country.
A strong conservationist, he demanded that international mountaineers clean up thousands of tons of discarded oxygen bottles, food containers and other climbing debris that litter an area known as South Col, the jump-off point for Everest attempts.
I am really sad to hear about Sir Edmund Hillary. We always followed his footsteps and I hope the younger generation will follow his footsteps and we will never forget Sir Edmund Hillary, said mountaineer Moni Mulapati.
It was on a visit to Nepal that his first wife, Louise, 43, and 16-year-old daughter Belinda died in a light plane crash on March 31, 1975.
He is survived by his wife, children Peter and Sarah and several grandchildren.

Nepal ( ( listen); Nepali: नेपाल Nepāl [neˈpal]), officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal (Nepali: सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल Saṅghīya Lokatāntrik Gaṇatantra Nepāl), is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is located mainly in the Himalayas but also includes parts of the Indo-Gangetic Plain. With an estimated population of 26.4 million, it is 48th largest country by population and 93rd largest country by area. It borders China in the north and India in the south, east, and west while Bangladesh is located within only 27 km (17 mi) of its southeastern tip and Bhutan is separated from it by the Indian state of Sikkim. Nepal has a diverse geography, including fertile plains, subalpine forested hills, and eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and largest city. Nepal is a multiethnic nation with Nepali as the official language.
The name Nepal is first recorded in texts from the Vedic period of the Indian subcontinent, the era in ancient India when Hinduism was founded, the predominant religion of the country. In the middle of the first millennium BCE, Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini in southern Nepal. Parts of northern Nepal were intertwined with the culture of Tibet. The centrally located Kathmandu Valley was the seat of the prosperous Newar confederacy known as Nepal Mandala. The Himalayan branch of the ancient Silk Road was dominated by the valley's traders. The cosmopolitan region developed distinct traditional art and architecture. By the 18th century, the Gorkha Kingdom achieved the unification of Nepal. The Shah dynasty established the Kingdom of Nepal and later formed an alliance with the British Empire, under its Rajput Rana dynasty of premiers. The country was never colonised but served as a buffer state between Imperial China and British India. Parliamentary democracy was introduced in 1951, but was twice suspended by Nepalese monarchs, in 1960 and 2005. The Nepalese Civil War in the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in the proclamation of a secular republic in 2008, ending the world's last Hindu monarchy. The Constitution of Nepal, adopted in 2015, establishes Nepal as a federal secular parliamentary republic divided into seven provinces. Nepal was admitted to the United Nations in 1955, and friendship treaties were signed with India in 1950 and the People's Republic of China in 1960. Nepal hosts the permanent secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), of which it is a founding member. Nepal is also a member of the Non Aligned Movement and the Bay of Bengal Initiative. The military of Nepal is the fifth largest in South Asia; it is notable for its Gurkha history, particularly during the world wars, and has been a significant contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Edmund Hillary
Sir Edmund Percival Hillary KG ONZ KBE (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. Hillary was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school, making his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War II. Prior to the 1953 Everest expedition, Hillary had been part of the British reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951, as well as an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He subsequently reached the North Pole, making him the first person to reach both poles and summit Everest.

Lake Mansarovar: Lake Manasa Sarovar is a personification of purity, and one who drinks water from the lake will go to the Abode of Lord Shiva after death.Manasa Sarovar/Lake Manas, is a freshwater lake in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China 940 kilometres from Lhasa. To the west of Lake Manasarovar is Lake Rakshastal; toward the north is Mount Kailash. According to the Hindu religion, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma after which it manifested on Earth. Hence, in Sanskrit it is called Manas sarovara, which is a combination of the words manas (mind) and sarovara (lake).
Lake Mansarovar is a place of pilgrimage, attracting religious people from India, Nepal, Tibet and the neighboring countries. Bathing in the Mansarovar and drinking its water is believed to cleanse all sins. Pilgrimage tours are organized regularly, especially from India, the most famous of which is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra which takes place every year.
Mansarovar lake has long been viewed by the pilgrims as being near the source of four of the greatest rivers of Asia, namely the Brahmaputra, Karnali, Indus and Sutlej. Thus it is an axial point which has been thronged to by pilgrims for thousands of years.Pilgrims have to cross many mountain ranges to reach there. There are various routes to reach kailash from India.

Ishibashi Junko was born in Miharu, Fukushima, the fifth daughter in a family of 7 children.[5][6] She was considered a frail, weak child, but nevertheless she began mountain climbing at the age of 10, going on a class climbing trip to Mount Nasu.[5][7] Although she was interested in doing more climbing, her family did not have enough money for such an expensive hobby, and Tabei made only a few climbs during her high school years
From 1958 to 1962, Tabei studied English literature and education at Showa Women's University, where she was a member of the mountain climbing club.[6] At university, she encountered a group of male students who were in an alpine club, which she longed to join. After graduating, Tabei formed the Ladies Climbing Club: Japan (LCC) in 1969. The club's slogan was Let's go on an overseas expedition by ourselves, and was the first of its kind in Japan.
Tabei later stated that she founded the club as a result of how she was treated by male mountaineers of the time; some men, for example, refused to climb with her, while others thought she was only interested in climbing as a way to find a husband.[6][7]
During this time, she climbed mountains such as Mount Fuji in Japan and the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. By 1972, Tabei was a recognized mountain climber in Japan.
Tabei's LCC contained a team known as the Japanese Women's Everest Expedition (JWEE), headed by Eiko Hisano, that would attempt to summit Mount Everest. JWEE contained 15 members, mostly working women, including teachers, a computer programmer and a juvenile counselor. Two of them, including Tabei, were mothers.[8] After Tabei and Hiroko Hirakawa successfully summited Annapurna III on 19 May 1970,[9] LCC decided to tackle Mount Everest.[10]
Tabei helped to find sponsors for the expedition, although she was frequently told that the women should be raising children instead.[7] She was able to obtain last-minute funding from the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper and Nippon Television, however all the group members still had to pay an amount that was almost equal to Japan's average salary. To save money, they would use recycled car seats to sew up waterproof pouches and over-gloves. They also purchased goose feather from China and made their own sleeping bags. Students at school collected unused packets of jam for their teachers.[11]
After a long training period, the team began the expedition early in 1975 when they traveled to Kathmandu. They used the same route to ascend the mountain that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay had taken in 1953.[12] In early May, the group was camping at 6,300 meters when an avalanche struck their camp. The women and their guides were buried under the snow. Tabei lost consciousness for approximately six minutes until her sherpa guide dug her out. Twelve days after the avalanche, on 16 May 1975, with her sherpa guide, Ang Tsering, Tabei became the first woman to reach the summit of Everest.[3][12]
As a result of her achievement, Tabei was showered with attention: she received messages from the King of Nepal and the Japanese government, a television miniseries was made about the expedition and she toured Japan making personal appearances. However, Tabei was uncomfortable with this level of fame
In the 1990–91 season, Tabei reached the summit of Mount Vinson, Antarctica's highest mountain.[13] On 28 June 1992, she summited Puncak Jaya in Indonesia and thus became the first woman to complete the Seven Summits.[2][4]
In addition to her climbing, Tabei worked on ecological concerns; in 2000, she completed postgraduate studies at Kyushu University focusing on the environmental degradation of Everest caused by the waste left behind by climbing groups.[5] Tabei was also the director of the Himalayan Adventure Trust of Japan, an organization working at a global level to preserve mountain environments.[3] One of the trust's projects was to build an incinerator to burn climbers' rubbish. She also led and participated in clean-up climbs in Japan and the Himalayas
Tabei was married to Masanobu Tabei, a climber she met while climbing in Japan in 1965. The couple had two children: a daughter, Noriko, and a son, Shinya.[6]
Tabei was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer in 2012; however, she continued with many of her mountaineering activities. She died in a hospital in Kawagoe on 20 October 2016

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
Nepal ( (listen); Nepali: नेपाल Nepāl [neˈpal]), officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal (Nepali: सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल Saṅghīya Lokatāntrik Gaṇatantra Nepāl), is a landlocked country in South Asia.
The centrally located Kathmandu Valley is intertwined with the culture of Indo-Aryans, and was the seat of the prosperous Newar confederacy known as Nepal Mandala. T ...
Hundreds Stranded As Night Travel Ban Takes Effect
Hundreds of passengers are stranded while losses are piling up for public service vehicle owners following the implementation of the ban on night travel
to reduce the high number of fatalities arising out of road accidents which often occur at night.
The ban was imposed on Tuesday, December 24th, soon after 18 people lost their lives in a road accident involving two buses at night.
Passengers traveling long distances are now forced to make stopovers for the night and continue with their journey the following day, hence the long queues witnessed at various bus terminals.

STORYLINE:
Members of Nepal's mountaineering community expressed sadness at news of the death of Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand adventurer who devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of this small South Asian nation.
Hillary conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century's greatest adventurers.
He had been unwell for some time and died in hospital at about 9 a.m. local time on Friday (2000 GMT Thursday) from a heart attack, said a statement from the Auckland District Health Board, the medical authority in New Zealand's largest city.
A family spokesman said it had accepted the offer of a state funeral, on a date to be set.
In Kathmandu, fellow mountaineers praised Hillary's contribution to their sport.
He did not just climb Everest but also the peaks surrounding Everest. He made his contribution by introducing Nepal to the world in both mountaineering and tourism, said Zimba Zangbu of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.
Hillary's life was marked by grand achievements, high adventure, discovery, excitement, and by his personal humility.
He was humble to the point that he only admitted being the first man atop Everest long after the death of Tenzing Norgay, the mountain guide with whom he stood arm in arm on the summit on May 29, 1953.
Hillary never forgot the small mountainous country that propelled him to worldwide fame, and revisited Nepal, where he became known as burra
sahib, or big man for his 188-centimetre (6 ft.
All of us in the mountaineering and tourism community have been saddened by the death. He helped the entire Sherpa people in education and health, said Wongchu, President of the Everest Summiteers Association on Friday.
It was on a visit to Nepal that his first wife, Louise, 43, and 16-year-old daughter Belinda died in a light plane crash on March 31, 1975.
He is survived by his wife, children Peter and Sarah and several grandchildren.
Hillary died aged 88.
