The Altavista petroglyph complex is located near the village and beach-town of Chacala, south of the Compostela Municipality, in Nayarit Mexico. The area is known as La Pila del Rey, Chacalán, El Santuario, The Petroglyphs” or the Altavista petroglyphs, near the Jaltemba Bay, in the Pacific Ocean of Nayarit.This region was originally home to the largely unstudied Tecoxquin native culture dating from approximately 2000 BC to 2300 BCE. It contains 56 petroglyphs whose antiquity cannot be accurately determined. Aside from its cultural and archeological importance, the site remains an important religious center for the Huicholes who still leave offerings and perform ceremonies here.In prehispanic times, the Compostela municipality area was inhabited by the Mazatán peoples, tributary of Xalisco-Zacualpan Kingdom.

Usually tourists would hire a guide to find this obscure location, but in this video I show you how to find the petroglyphs, waterfall and pools yourself.It is a bit of a hike and completely unsigned, but if you know where to find them, the Petroglyphs at Altavista are well worth the effort. And there is a refreshing dip in a pool at the end as your reward.

Exploring the Mysterious Altavista Petroglyphs of The Texcoquin Shaman

This is our hike into the ancient site of the Altavista Petroglyphs in Nayarit, Mexico.It takes about 30 minutes to hike in from the last point on the dirt road. They say there are many hundreds of the petroglyphs spread across a 22 hectares. We journeyed to the heart of them to a place called the Kings Pool or La Pila del Ray and I personally took a bath in the Kings Pool. This religious site which represents ancient Science, Art and Technological symbols is currently used occasionally by the Shaman of the Huichol People to do their sacred ceremonies that keep the world in balance with the right amount of rain. The petroglyphs date back over 2000 years. This place was also Aztec once upon a time. While there, Honest Mike reads a few of the information posters along the way which make the whole site so intriguing because the symbols represent ancient shamans science, technology and spiritual beliefs. .It is thought that The Apostle Matthew travelled in this area turning folks to Christians.Note:The Altavista rocks were probably associated with the mythical Tamoanchan trees connecting the underworld, earth and heaven.
