Standing on the hills and overlooking the north shore of the sea is Alto Vista Chapel. Alto Vista is a small catholic chapel which is also known as ”Pilgrims Church”.
The chapel is very interesting mainly for its history but also thanks to its bright yellow color which is very unusual for churches. Alto Vista Chapel that can be seen nowadays was completed in 1952 and stands in the same location as the original chapel.
It is stated that Alto Vista Chapel is the location where the original Aruban Indians started to convert to Christianity.

Alto Vista Kapel Aruba.
Op een hoge vlakte aan de noordkust ligt de kapel van Alto Vista. Op deze plaats, een ruim 70 m. hoge kalksteenheuvel, werd in 1750 door de in deze omgeving wonende Indianen de eerste katholieke kapel van het eiland gebouwd. Op de stenen ondergrond werd van takken een kerkje gebouwd, dat in 1816 weer werd gesloten omdat de plaatselijke bevolking in verband met een besmettelijke ziekte was weggetrokken en daarna is het langzaam maar zeker vergaan. Mensen die later in de nabijheid van deze plaats gingen wonen hielden de plaats waar de kapel gestaan had echter in ere en regelmatig ging men bidden bij de fundamenten en resten van de vergane kapel. In 1952 heeft men ter herinnering aan deze eerste kerk op Aruba op de plaats van de oude kerk een nieuwe Mariakapel gebouwd. Daarin bevindt zich het Spaanse kruisbeeld, dat in het eerste kerkje ook heeft gestaan. Dit kruisbeeld is één van de oudste kunstvoorwerpen op Aruba. Elk jaar wordt er in oktober een bedevaart gehouden. De weg naar de kapel is voorzien van witte kruisbeelden.
