Oldest Olive Tree
Oldest olive tree in Ano Vouves.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Olive tree of Vouves (Greek Ελιά Βουβών) is an olive tree in the village of Ano Vouves in the municipal unit of Kolymvari in Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. It is probably one of the oldest olive trees in the world and still produces olives today. The use of tree ring analysis has proven the tree to be at least 2000 years old.[1] On the other end of the scale, scientists from the University of Crete have estimated it to be 4,000 years old.[2] The trunk has a perimeter of 12.5 m and a diameter of 4.6 m. It belongs to the variety tsounati. It is considered by some a natural monument. Current research in Crete and abroad, indicates that earlier estimates of the age of olive trees are to be debated as far as their accuracy. There is not yet an agreed upon scientific method established to ascertain the ages of olives. In the case of the Vouves Olive, it could be much younger than earlier estimates indicated or for example the ancient tree in Finix (Sfakia).
The centuries-old olive trees of Crete
The island of Crete is one of the few remaining places in the world where one can still come across millennia-old olive trees-both singularly scattered and entire olive groves of them-and the only place with the world's oldest olive trees, resonant vestiges of the long-gone Minoan civilization. Not only are these ancient trees alive, they are still productive, offering people their invaluable gift over thousands of years.

The Mount of Olives with Olive Trees 2,000 and 3,000 Years Old
“When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” (Matthew 26:30)
These olive trees have been authenticated to be 2,000 and 3,000 years old; i.e., their root systems, for the Roman Emperor Titus cut down the trees when he destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A. D. (Cf. Matthew 24:1-2)
Thus the 2,000 year-old trees were here when Jesus and the disciples were here, and the 3,000 year-old tree was here at King David’s time.

Tiffany Riley's speech at The 3000 year old Ancient Olive Tree, Vouves, Crete.avi
In 2009 I was asked to do a little speech about the ancient olive tree at Ano Vouves. It is a wondrous tree in a near by village, and was highlighted as part of a contemporary exhibition held at the Art Factory, Olivepress in Dromonero.

The exhibition was entitled 'The Mediterranean Olive Grove'.
Here is what I said in English! -
We are delighted that you could all join us here today in celebration of our ancient olive tree.
I feel very honored after living on Crete for 15 years to have found a home in this small Beautiful Village of Vouves.
Here we are privileged to have one of the oldest living evergreen neighbours -- our ancient olive tree of 3000 years old.
This neighbour has lived through many wars and long periods of peace,
many hot summers and equally winters.
And she still produces fruit, gives us shade in the hot afternoons and rest for the birds.
Our neighbour resonates with times gone by.
She began to grow in the dark iron ages, was cultivated by the Minoans, pruned by the Romans, and harvested by the Christians. She also saw the Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians and Turks until the independence of Crete.
She also endured 2 world wars.
We will leave, but she will stay.
Forever a symbol of Hope, Peace, Wisdom and Culture
So, lets raise our glasses to toast our lovely neighbour!
