Huascaran 1986 - Peru , mountain climbing
Huascaran is the second highest peak in South America. This film from 1986 tells the story about how some Swedes reaches the summit...The swedes made the trip to test high altitudes , a good individual experience for the coming expedition to Everest in -87.

???????? Huascarán National Park (Huaraz, Peru)
Coming from the Northern hemisphere makes me instinctively look for snow in December. This time I found my winter fairytale in Huascarán National Park with its hundreds of glaciers, lakes and lagoons at 3-6k meter altitude. Gorgeously turquoise waters, green valleys with snow-capped mountains on the background - unbelievable beauty and diversity of landscapes.
With hiking trails from just a couple of hours up to 10 days, even one month would not be enough to explore this place properly but here’s what one can do in 4 days:
Day 1️⃣. Take it easy and get acclimatised to the 3k+ altitudes. No joke, I’ve seen people vomit and faint on their first day in the mountains. Of course it doesn’t mean staying at home and doing nothing the whole day.
Get one of the widely offered bus tours to see the picturesque Llanganuco lagoon.
Along the way you'll visit the Yungay village, now declared a national cemetery, as it was fully destroyed in 1970 by an earthquake followed by an avalanche, killing about 20.000 people.
Try the local delicacy “cuy”, a fried/roasted guinea pig (the locals find it funny that we keep these guys as pets, for them it’s nothing else but food). Drink mate de coca to prevent altitude sickness.
Day 2️⃣. Test if you're altitude-ready by taking a bus tour to Pastoruri Glacier situated at a bit over 5.000m (broke my personal record there!). There’s a short one hour hike at the top, which lets you fully experience the fun of walking at high altitudes - all the movements are slower, the body doesn’t listen and respond to you properly, while the amazing scenery makes you want to run around, jump, take one million pictures and build a snowman! Sad fact, this glacier is disappearing due to the climate changes and will be completely gone in about 20 years.
Day 3️⃣. Hike Laguna 69, the highlight of the trip and deserves a separate post - stay tuned!
Day 4️⃣. Hike Laguna Wilcacocha, with its breathtaking views over the whole Cordillera Blanca. Passing through the tiny local village on the way up you’re most likely to hear Quechua rather than Spanish. And wrap it all up with a hot-tub-relax at the termal waters in Monterrey!
Huayhuash circuit trekking Peru
Crowned by six peaks that exceed 6 000m, located to 110 Km to the South of Huaraz, 50 Km of Cordillera Blanca in the Peruvian Andes. The Cordillera Huayhuash offers one of the most spectacular mountain treks anywhere; the complete circuit normally takes between 10 to 12 days with passes over 4700m, but the rewards are great: turquoise color lakes, clear mountain streams, rare species of birds, steep peaks, Etc.
The images shown in this video belong a trek almost at the end of the season, first week of October in 2011.

Santa Cruz Trek, Huaraz, Peru
13 - 16 August 2018
Stoked to have completed the 4d3n Santa Cruz trek, one of the most photogenic in the Cordillera Blanca (“white mountain range”), within the Huascarán National Park. We were also advised to acclimatise at Huaraz for 1-2 days before the trek so that we can cope with the altitude. Overall, it was an easy-medium trek because it was pretty flat except for day 2’s ascend to the peak. We had to go slow and steady to fight the thin air while ascending, but the views made the fight forgettable!
Day 1: 6 hrs car ride to the village of Vaqueria, stopping at a view point to observe the Sister lakes of Llanganuco. Hiked for about 3 hrs passing villages through valleys to our first campsite Paria (3650m). Day 2: 6-7 hrs trek to the Punta Union peak (4750m), passing through dried lakes with the snow capped peaks ahead of us. At the ytop there was spectacular and panoramic views of the peaks of Paria and many other mountains, Mount Taulliraju and glacial lake. Had lunch at the peak and descended to our day 2 campsite Taullipampa (4200m). Day 3: we decided to combine day 3&4’s trek into 1 day (7hrs) cause the group was faster. Went pass lake Arhueycocha to our final campsite at Cashapampa (2900m). We even had time to squeeze in a trip to the local natural hot spring, finally getting a “shower” after 3 days.
It was definitely rewarding as we learnt to step out of our comfort zones, appreciating the beauty around us instead of thinking how dirty or tired/uncomfortable we are. Nights were also freezing cold (0 to negative degrees), but hey we coped and even saw LOTS of stars and the Milky Way! Most importantly we had an amazing group and time together, cracking jokes with each other from the first day and playing UNO cards to kill time during the night.
It’s always about the journey!

Huascaran South on the top with Peru Expedition season 2020
Expedition Huascaran South (6768 m)
Nevado Huascarán: Huascarán is the highest peak in Peru. This mountain has two summits: Huascarán North (6655 m) and the main summit, Huascarán South (6768 m). Many climbers dream of reaching the high summit of 6768 meters. Huascarán offers multiple routes to arrive at the highest point in Peru. Technically, the climb is not difficult, nevertheless, due to its elevation and risk of avalanches, it is a serious endeavor. Observation: Huascarán South Summit (6,768 m) The conditions on all mountains change every year; Huascarán is no exception. The glacier between the first and second camps is receding, and as such, some years it is a challenge to get from high camp 1 to high camp 2 due to the crevasses and the large avalanches that may fall in the primary chute. Nevertheless, an ascent of Huascarán is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of mountaineering in the Andes.
