Anna Maria Historic Green Village: Video 1 Sustainable Development
This is the first video in a series of videos following the sustainable green development of the Anna Maria Historic Green Village in Anna Maria, Florida. The Green Village is for commercial and retail use and shall be powered entirely by renewable green energy such as solar energy and ground source heat pumps. The whole concept of the Green Village is to be zero net energy -- achieving platinum LEED certification.
Video transcript:
Voiceover: On Anna Maria Island there's a quiet revolution that's merging history with state of the art green technology.
Mike: We came to Anna Maria in 2003 where we used to vacation for a week or two from our businesses in the UK.
Lizzie: Anna Maria Island is the fantastic combination of a beautiful, natural environment, a small community where people really still care for each other and just a great city code where we have old Florida style buildings. We have beautiful landscaping.
Mike: The Green Village is a collection of five commercial buildings which will be powered by solar energy and ground source heat pumps geothermics and it'll all be put together to drive the air conditioning, the water heaters, again the rain harvests all the water for irrigation and the toilet flushing. So the whole concept of the village is to be zero net energy.
Lizzie: So it's very cool technology, very smart technology and we're very excited because it's not expensive technology and it's also technology that will become cheaper and cheaper over time. What we want to do is show people now so that as it becomes very affordable more people will adopt it. Our mission is to share all this cool technology but also the sense that a small island community like this can be a very modern place. It's very historic but it can also look into the future and think 'how do we sustain ourselves in the long term?', 'how do we deal with waste?', 'how do we deal with water?', 'how do we deal with electricity?' All of the sorts of things that we all need to think about whether it's a commercial building or a home.
Voiceover: The historic Green Village potentially has global implications as leaders of industries and nations talk about alternative energy. The Thrashers are putting it to work on a small town main street on Florida's Gulf Coast.
Anna Maria Historic Green Village: Video 2 Sustainable Development
This is the second video in a series of videos following the sustainable green development of the Anna Maria Historic Green Village in Anna Maria, Florida showing that phase one of the project is on track to be completed by mid April. The Green Village is for retail and commercial use and shall be powered entirely by renewable green energy such as solar energy and ground source heat pumps. The whole concept of the Green Village is to be zero net energy -- achieving platinum LEED certification.
Voiceover: As construction on the Anna Maria Island Historic Green Village continues the historic part of the project is actually bigger than you might think.
Lizzie: So the history of this house is that it was built in 1913, it was built for William Bean who was one of the original developers on the island.
Gene: That building was built out of blocks made on a block making machine where you made them one at a time and you could buy the block machine for $62.50 and go in to the block making business. If you look up in the ceiling as we tore the house apart the wood that was used in the ceiling was the form lumber that they used to make the foundation. When they were finished with the house I'm sure they didn't have a scrap of wood left. They used everything because they had nothing to work with.
Lizzie: The Sears Cottage was purchased by a family in 1935 from a catalogue. It was brought down here from Tampa on a boat, unloaded on the beach at the end of our street, transported up Pine Avenue by a pony and trap. It was lived in by a number of different people over the years and eventually it kinda fell in to disrepair really. A developer bought the land and was going to destroy it, was going to knock it down and build new buildings on it. But before they did that they said 'would we like it?', and we thought great! We lift it up and put it on little dolly wheels, wheeled it half a mile down the street and have just put it on the Historic Green Village here. And then the real work began. We've made it very energy efficient; it's one of the quietest buildings on Pine Avenue now because of the level of insulation on the windows. And it's just a really really beautiful space.
Voiceover: Part technology, part history. The Anna Maria Island Historic Green Village project is on track to complete phase one in mid April.

Top 10 Prettiest Towns in United States
Do you live in one of the America’s prettiest cities? It’s impossible to say what’s “best” for everyone, of course. But where’s the fun in not trying? Here, below is our list of top 10 prettiest towns in United States. These beautiful towns are not only thriving economically, they’ve also got all you could want in a place to raise a family: plenty of green space, good schools, and a strong sense of community.
10. Edgartown, Massachusetts
Edgartown is a town located on Martha’s Vineyard in Dukes County, Massachusetts, United States. It is the county seat of Dukes County. Widely known as an exclusive enclave for the affluent and famous, the island is at its most charming in Edgartown, the largest and most expensive community on the Vineyard.
9. Key West, Florida
Closer to Cuba than it is to the mainland United States, Key West exudes a laid-back and casual vibe that is different than almost any other town in the country. It’s a place that marches to its own (usually steel) drummer.
8. Longview, Washington
Not even the port industry that clusters around the Lewis and Clark bridge can block the scenery of one of the Pacific Northwest’s most charming towns. “It is one of the only, if not the only planned community in the west at the time,” says Foster Church of “Discovering Main Street.
7. Athens, Georgia
A university town that enjoyed a small measure of renown in the ‘80s and ‘90s, thanks to a fertile music scene which gave birth to the B-52s and R.E.M., among others. Athens is earning a more recent reputation as a post-industrial success story.
6. Tarrytown, New York
Tarrytown’s rich history, including being a throughway on the Underground Railroad, name-dropped by Washington Irving in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and, later, one of the preferred Upstate getaways for New York’s rich and powerful, is visible wherever you go in this Hudson River-side town
5. Fort Benton, Montana
Fort Benton is a city in and the county seat of Chouteau County, Montana, United States. A portion of the city was designated as a National Historic Landmark District in 1961. Established in 1846, a full generation before the U.S. Civil War, Fort Benton is one of the oldest settlements in the American West. Founded as a fur-trading post in 1847, the town flourished well into the 1860s, when the Gold Rush cash was flowing back eastward.
4. Breckenridge, Colorado
In a state known for its charming alpine ski towns, Breckenridge stands out both for its stunning vistas, charming streets, family-friendly vibe and – most importantly, for many visitors – unsurpassed proximity to a wide variety of world-class ski options. With giant peaks, more than 150 trails.
3. Gatlinburg, Tennessee
With its charming, quaint old buildings in the centre of town, its dramatic mountain backdrop and the only ski resort in Tennessee, Gatlinburg has become a popular tourist destination for regional fun-seekers.
2. Camden, Maine
Camden is a famous summer colony in the Mid-Coast region of Maine. Similar to Bar Harbor, Nantucket and North Haven, Camden is well known for its summer community of wealthy Northeasterners, mostly from Boston, New York and Philadelphia. “It’s like a movie set. In fact, it has often been a movie set.”
1. Newport, Rhode Island
Known for being the city of some of the “Summer White Houses”. Like a town stuck in time but with the occasional hole in the space-time continuum to allow for modern touches, Newport, with its stunning harbor and bevy of old homes, is the quintessential New England town. Newport’s fame began as a 19th century summertime visitors’ magnet of a town, and it still reliably draws in clusters of visitors, both for the daytime shopping, eating, and sightseeing options

Remember Always Cross at the Green, Red, Yellow and all the Colors of the Rainbow (Video)
By FloridaKeysNewsBureau For EyesOnNews.com, May 28, 2015 - KEY WEST, Fla. -- The City of Key West installed four permanent rainbow crosswalks Thursday at the intersection of Duval and Petronia streets, in the heart of the island's LGBT entertainment district.
Spanning all four corners of the intersection, the crosswalks feature bands of all six colors of the rainbow flag, an internationally recognized symbol of gay and lesbian unity.
Key West is very happy to be putting in the first thermoplastic permanent rainbow crosswalks in the state of Florida, said Mayor Craig Cates. It means so much to Key West to show our diversity, and also it goes perfectly with our 'One Human Family' motto.
Spearheaded by the city and the Key West Business Guild, the rainbow crosswalks are composed of pre-formed thermoplastic color blocks alternating with white stripes. After the blocks were laid on the street by the city's Community Services Department workers, they were heat-treated with propane torches to affix the colors permanently on the pavement.
The rainbow crosswalks are the latest manifestation of Key West's longstanding embrace of diversity. One Human Family was adopted as the city's official philosophy in 2000, proclaiming equality and acceptance for everyone, and the island is internationally known as a leading LGBT vacation destination.
Accepting diversity has been going on for generations in Key West, mainly starting back when Key West was an island with no access but boats, said Cates. Everybody learned to live together, accept one another, so that has continued on through generations and is very evident today.
While the rainbow crosswalks opened to traffic early Thursday afternoon, their official debut is scheduled Wednesday, June 10, kicking off the June 10-14 Key West Pride festivities.
