Anne Hathaway's Cottage - Stratford-upon-Avon
Anne Hathaway grew up in a lovely cottage near Stratford-upon-Avon. She married 18- year-old William Shakespeare when she was 26 and three months pregnant. The couple had 3 children. Shakespeare spent much of their married life in London but returned to the family three years before his death in 1616. He and Anne are buried together in the chancel of Holy Trinity Church in Stratford.

Anne Hathaway's Cottage is a twelve-roomed farmhouse where Anne Hathaway, the wife of William Shakespeare, lived as a child in the village of Shottery, Warwickshire, England, about 1 mile west of Stratford-upon-Avon. Spacious, and with several bedrooms, Anne Hathaway's Cottage is now set in extensive gardens.
The earliest part of the house was built prior to the 15th century; the higher part is 17th century. Anne Hathaway's Cottage was known as Hewlands Farm in Shakespeare's day and had more than 90 acres (36 hectares) of land attached to it; to call it a cottage is really a misnomer, as it is much larger than the term usually means. As in many houses of the period, Anne Hathaway's Cottage has multiple chimneys to spread the heat evenly throughout the house during winter. The largest chimney was used for cooking. It also has visible timber framing, typical of vernacular Tudor architecture.
After the death of Hathaway's father, the cottage was owned by her brother Bartholomew, and was passed down the Hathaway family until 1846, when financial problems forced them to sell it. However, Anne Hathaway's Cottage was still occupied by them as tenants when it was acquired in 1892 by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, which removed later additions and alterations. In 1969 the cottage was badly damaged in a fire, but was restored by the Trust. Anne Hathaway's Cottage is now open to the public as a museum.

Anne Hathaway's Cottage & Garden's Tour
We had a lovely day visiting Anne Hathaway's cottage - the wife of Sir William Shakespeare. She was 8 years older than William and was carrying his child when they married. William was only 18 years old and Anne was 26, so this was quite unusual at this time. The building itself has changed over time but the stone floor in the kitchen is original and where both Anne and William once walked upon. The place is so idyllic for anyone who loves history and appreciates Shakespeare's history.
Thank you for watching!
