Appleby-in-Westmorland is a town and civil parish in Cumbria, in North West England. It is situated within a loop of the River Eden and has a population of approximately 2,500. It is in the historic county of Westmorland, of which it was the county town. The town's name was simply Appleby, until the local government changes of 1974. When a successor parish was formed for the former borough of Appleby, the council effected a change in the town's name, to preserve the historic county's name.
Appleby's main industry is tourism, due to its history, remote location, scenery and closeness to the Lake District, the North Pennines, Swaledale and Howgill Fells.
Appleby is overlooked by the (privately owned) Appleby Castle, a predominantly Norman structure, which provided the home for Lady Anne Clifford, in the 17th century.

Appleby Castle is situated just 15 miles from the English Lake District and deep in the heart of the Eden Valley, nestling alongside the meandering River Eden. This spectacular motte and bailey castle has been held by the Kings of England and Scotland and boasts one of the few remaining intact Norman keeps.
In the 17th Century, the Castle was the preferred residence of Lady Anne Clifford. She was a patron of authors and literature; and known for her many letters and diaries. Imagine being able to relax in the home of Lady Anne.
Appleby Castle is the perfect location for luxurious weddings. Celebrate your wedding reception in style after a ceremony in the Great Hall built in 1454.
The Castle is also available for private celebrations, business conferences, filming and sporting events.
During the summer months, the Castle holds a number of social events including open-air theatre and battle re-enactments.
History tours of the Castle are held daily but advance booking is essential.

Appleby Castle owns the fishing rights on both sides of the River Eden immediately beneath the weir. This is prime fishing territory and Salmon, Trout and Grayling abound in this special stretch of river. Fishing rights are exclusively for our guests.

Appleby Walks was about 8 miles in distance with a couple of easy inclines. The route terrain was quite easy as it was on level ground, taking us along a clear, well marked route, including some country lanes. There was a bit of erosion along Hoff Beck and we encountered a small mud slide, which may be a problem in wet weather and over time. There were also more than 15 stiles to negotiate.
