Appleby in Westmorland, Cumbria, UK - 4th September, 2012
Appleby-in-Westmorland is a town and civil parish in Cumbria, in North West England. It is situated within a loop of the River Eden and has a population of approximately 2,500. It is in the historic county of Westmorland, of which it was the county town. The town's name was simply Appleby, until the local government changes of 1974. When a successor parish was formed for the former borough of Appleby, the council effected a change in the town's name, to preserve the historic county's name.
Appleby's main industry is tourism, due to its history, remote location, scenery and closeness to the Lake District, the North Pennines, Swaledale and Howgill Fells.
Appleby is overlooked by the (privately owned) Appleby Castle, a predominantly Norman structure, which provided the home for Lady Anne Clifford, in the 17th century.
This video features views around Appleby including the town centre, abbey, High Wiend, Doomgate, park, grazing horses, River Eden, a local football match, anti erosion work on the river bank, cricket field, Grapes Inn, bridge over the River Eden, steps for the horses to get down to the river, bad spelling, Railway Station, passing loco-hauled rail excursion and a steam train.

Brougham, just two miles outside Penrith, lies in the former historic county of Westmorland. A Roman fort originally occupied the site of the current Brougham Castle. The site was later taken by the Norman family of Vieuxpont to build their castle, the ruins of which can still be seen. Vieuxpont’s castle consisted of a stone keep, and service buildings, surrounded by a timber pallisade.
By 1268 the castle had passed to Robert Clifford, whose father Roger had become Lord of Brougham when he married Robert Vieuxpoint’s great-granddaughter. Robert Clifford was an important figure in the Scottish wars which started in 1296, and he carried out much work at Brougham to stregthen the defences.
In 1643 Lady Anne Clifford inherited the Clifford Estate. In 1649 when she was 60 years old, she moved North, and spent the next 26 years rebuilding churches and castles. Skipton, Pendragon, Appleby, Brough and Brougham Castles were restored to their former glory. She died at Brougham Castle, in the room where her father had been born, in 1676. After this the castle quickley fell into ruin.
You can wander through the impressive ruins of the 13th century fortress, admiring its lovely location of the banks of the River Eamont. The keep is the oldest part of the castle still standing; the bottom three stories are from about 1175. You may explore the keep, walking around the rooms which include the castle’s hall on the first floor. On the second floor is the lord’s chamber, in which Lady Anne slept when she stayed here, and in which she died. On the third floor is a passage all the way round within the walls, and from various points you can get impressive views of the other castle buildings and the surrounding area.

Brougham Castle, Cumbria.
The Lake District is visited by millions for its outstanding natural beauty but there is also a wealth of history to be discovered at English Heritage and National Trust properties across the region. Brougham Castle, near Penrith, is one such place that really should be on your 'must visit' list when coming to The Lake District.
This English Heritage property lies in a picturesque setting beside the crossing of the River Eamont in Cumbria and was founded in the early 13th century. The great keep largely survives and its complex of passages and spiral stairways makes Brougham a fascinating castle to explore, as well as an ideal picnic setting for a family day out.
This is one of those magical places where you can walk in the footsteps of history, from the Scottish Wars and the visit of Edward 1 in 1300 to the 18th and 19th century visits of artists, poets and antiquarians such as J.M.W. Turner and William Wordsworth. William and his sister Dorothy explored these ruins as teenagers and their experiences are vividly recorded in The Prelude. You can share their same sense of wonder and excitement today!
This short film will hopefully persuade you to make the visit.
