Profile of a Swing State Town (1/5) 'This Land: Donna's Diner' | The New York Times
It's 7 a.m. in Elyria, Ohio, and the day on Ely Square starts with the first pulse of the neon sign in the window of Donna's Diner. The regulars will arrive soon, and Donna Dove, the resilient proprietor, will ignite the grill that she seems to have just turned off. It's her own business, her calling, run on a shoestring in a city that has seen better times and hopes it will again.
The dateline is Elyria, Ohio, a city of 55,000 about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland. You know this town, even if you have never been here. A place buffeted by time and the economy, a place where the expectations have been lowered, but not hopes for better days to come. A place where politicians, in this election year, say the American dream is still possible.

9/11 remembrance service
On 9/11 44,000 passengers and crew travelling on 255 aircraft were diverted from their destinations in the United States to Canada for safe refuge. 7,000 of those travellers landed in Gander, Newfoundland. Gander had a population of 11,000 people. Basically, the community boosted its population by 66% in a matter of hours. Gander and neighbouring communities of Appleton, Gambo, Glenwood, Lewisporte and Norris Arm rolled up their sleeves to welcome these unexpected visitors.
The Town of Appleton (pop. 582) hosted 80 of these diverted travellers, thereby immediately increasing their population by 15%. After ‘the plane people’ left, the people of Appleton, without fanfare, continued to remember them - and others. Each September 11th they hold a remembrance ceremony. This video is part of their ninth anniversary event on September 11, 2010. As you see by the flapping flags, it was a windy day. It was also cold and rainy. But people still came out to honour and remember.
The service also included a reading of the poem, The September Snow, and a moment of silence.
In thanks for the care and compassion shown by the people of Appleton the Port Authority of New York, State of New Jersey and Government of the United States sent the community part of a steel beam from The World Trade Centre. It holds pride of place in the community’s Riverfront Peace Park, where the annual remembrance service is held.
Beyond the horror of that day, it’s worth thinking of the message of Carole King’s iconic song, “You’ve Got A Friend.”

Steep Streets Of Altoona, Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania has a lot of very steep roads, a few weeks ago I took a few pictures to show a friend how steep Altoona's streets really are. It's not as impressive as Baldwin Street in New Zealand, but we do have parts of individual blocks which are really steep, and some parts of streets that were too steep to build a road (or you could technically build a road but it was deemed unsafe to do so). I also filmed some footage today of driving up a road that ranged from fairly steep for the most part to very steep for a half block. The roads I featured all are steeper than a 15 degree angle, and I'd wager that the half block of 25th street as well as 18th and 19th avenues near downtown could possibly be as much as an 18 degree slope, which approaches world record territory. The streets in Altoona rival those of San Francisco despite being less famous. Pittsburgh also has some steep roads, such as Canton Avenue.
Locations of various roads used in the video
25th Street - The edge of Dutch Hill, from 4th Avenue to Michelle Drive, steepest part between 1st avenue and Crawford avenue
18th and 19th Avenue - Both between 11th and 12th Street, not too far from downtown
12th Street - Downtown, from 15th Avenue to 14th Avenue, overlooking everything down to 10th Avenue.
2nd Street - Logantown, between Cherry Avenue and Spruce Avenue, overlooking the city and the mountains
Music used: Edvard Greig - In The Hall Of The Mountain King - Peer Gynt as performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra
The music selection is a public domain recording, please do not file a copyright claim on the music used in this video.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Beloit (#609)
[Latest Airdate: December 14, 2017]
[Original Airdate: March 2, 2017]
Beloit really surprised us --- and we're not easily surprised. This is a city with a great, paradoxical spirit. Polished and rustic, sophisticated and folksy, old and new, serious and whimsical. Highlights? Forward thinking companies like Universal AET and AccuLynx who are new life to the renovated buildings that were Beloit Corporation. The old Beckman Mill made to work like new again. Thousands of angels under the roof of an old church (not what you're thinking). And no kidding, some of the best food of the season! John literally ate his way through Beloit --- and enjoyed every bite at Bushel & Peck's, Merrill and Houston's and The 615 Club. But it was the fun, hardworking people who made our time in Beloit a week to remember. Yep, the people... and the Ironworks! You have to see this reinvigorated area. The Ironworks is just really cool. And since we love cool, we love Beloit!

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Delafield (#806)
[Original Airdate: February 7, 2019]
Delafield and smiles just go together. Yes, there’s a literal, giant smile on a barn to welcome you as you exit I-94 onto Hwy 83. But we found that the smiles we enjoyed most were the ones we shared with people like Bob Lang, Tom at Naga-waukee golf course, Pipe Major Donaldson at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, and Ramona and Mark at Seven Seas. Smiles are always in abundance in charming, colonial-style downtown Delafield, and especially for us at the Barn Owl and Daybreak Prime Meats & Deli. Just south of I-94 we found our good moods bolstered at Lapham Peak and at Arcon Mfg. & Lake Country Candies (candy raisins make everyone smile, right?). By the time we left Randy at Ten Chimneys, our faces hurt– in a good way! Delafield is definitely a happy place!
