HIGHLIGHTS: Tour of Army Museum of Western Australia
On 30 August 2018, WA DEFENCE REVIEW in partnership with AIM WA had the pleasure of organising an interactive tour of the iconic Army Museum of Western Australia located at the Artillery Barracks site in Burt Street, Fremantle. Involving over 20 decision-makers and senior professionals from government and industry, the tour provided a valuable insight into WA's military heritage, largely unknown to many, in what is arguably one of Australia's best military museums. Included in the tour was an insightful presentation by BRIG David Thompson AM (Rtd), former Commander, 13 Brigade, Australian Army, who spoke on military leadership and its transferable lessons for civilian management professionals.

Army Museum of Western Australia chooses BKAYDesign to create their new gallery.
The first stage of a major gallery redevelopment for the Army Museum of Western Australia in Fremantle is to be designed and built by BKAYDesign.
The first gallery, to be known as The Post 1945 Gallery, has as one of its core aims to engage the public in understanding and valuing the role and contribution of the Australian Army since the end of World War II, both within Australia and internationally. This gallery will be the first of four specialised galleries, each one featuring a different chapter in Australian military history.
Graham Horne, the Chairman of the Army Museum of WA Foundation said the first priority would be to fit out the post-1945 gallery to include the Armys involvement with many key conflicts and military opperations. These include the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan from 1945, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and conflicts in Malaya, Indonesia, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition the gallery will include information and artefacts from a multitude of peacekeeping missions, the Australian Regular Army, Citizen Military Forces, the Army Reserve and Cadets in Western Australia.
BKAYDesigns Kim Kay said his company was extremely proud to be associated with the design and construction of the Museums new gallery.
It is very satisfying to help create a moving testimony to the role played by the Australian Army from 1945 to the present day, he said.
Our brief from the Army Museum of Western Australia is to engage visitors in a way that has not been possible before. To tell present and future generations of the sacrifices and challenges faced by Western Australian men and women who put their lives on the line in the service of their country. This gallery will have a strong focus on personal stories and experiences.
BKAYDesign has an acknowledged expertise in designing and building exhibitions, largely for the oil and gas industry.
Our core business is the imaginative use of third dimensional space and the opportunity to apply these skills to the creation of a museum of this class from the ground up is a challenge we grabbed with both hands, Mr Kay said.
The Post 1945 Gallery of the museum will open on 22 April 2010 on the first floor of the western end of the Artillery Barracks at 2 Burt Street Fremantle. It is supported by an initial $581,000 grant from Lotterywest and a $2.5 million fundraising appeal has been launched to fund the development of this and the following three stages of the museum.
When finished, it is expected to attract thousands of people.

This is a short documentary I made as part of an assignment on shaping people's ideas with my group for year 12 media class.
We had a choice when completing this assignment: make a documentary on Fremantle, or make a documentary on a youth issue. As you will see, we chose Fremantle.
Because one of our classmates was doing a documentary on why Fremantle was great, we decided to hold a sort of competition and make one on why Fremantle was... well... not so great, in order to see who could do better (proving who was the better director, lol).
So we did the best we could, using film and documentary conventions and techniques to show Fremantle in a bad light.
It should be noted that this documentary was not intended to offend anyone, but its contents may do so. So if you love Fremantle to bits, do not watch this clip and then spam the comment box with complaints about how offended you were, I am not forcing you to watch it.
The faces of some people walking around in Fremantle are also shown in this movie. If your face is shown, sorry, but you walked in front of the camera so too bad. Think of it this way... you are now slightly famous,lol
Also, we are amateurs, not Michael Moore, so don't spam comments stating what we could have done to make the doco better. If you think you could do better go ahead, make your own documentary.
Most of all though, I love Fremantle, whenever I go out, its usually to Fremantle. Remember that this documentary is SUPPOSED to show Fremantle in a negative way, we did that in order to succeed in our assignment, which ended up getting us good marks.

Fremantle Travel Guide - Fascinating Australian Moments
Fremantle is an Indian Ocean port, clinging to the western edge of Australia at the mouth of the Swan River, facing west towards Rottnest Island, Mauritius, and Africa. Further up the Swan River is the Western Australian capital city of Perth, and Fremantle while its own district and city, is a part of Perth's Train network, and well connected. Locally, Fremantle is often shortened to Freo in speech.
Before the arrival of European settlers in 1829, the area that is now Fremantle was Nyoongar aboriginal land. With settlement, Fremantle was the port for the colony and the settlement up river of Perth. In 1929, Fremantle was declared a city.
Following World War 2, Mediterranean immigrants settled and developed the fishing industry. They also brought with them cafe culture and Mediterranean cuisine, making the city a place of interest in a country with a predominant English culture. This cultural diversity has since attracted artists, musicians and 'alternative' groups, and Fremantle developed as an 'arty' retail district. It's vibrancy was aided by Fremantle's position as a transport hub and service centre.
You can get around most of central Fremantle for free on the (Central Area Transit) CAT Bus which runs every ten minutes during daylight hours. It is orange with a large black cat on the side. Look for the CAT symbol at bus stops, and maybe even paw-prints on the footpath. The CAT Bus is wheelchair and pram accessible, including kneeling (automatic lowering suspension) and ramp access.
Fremantle has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa). The regular sea breeze is known as the Fremantle Doctor, as it provides cooling relief from the summer heat when it arrives between noon and 3pm. Fremantle is generally a few degrees cooler than Perth in summer and less cold in winter.
Fremantle offers a wide variety of dining experiences, with a strong emphasis on Italian and Asian cuisine as well as seafood. Various cafés and coffee shops are situated around Fremantle, particularly on the 'Cappuccino Strip', a section of South Terrace known for its alfresco dining culture. The Fishing Boat Harbour has become a tourist precinct, with a mixture of microbreweries, restaurants and some of Australia's largest fish and chip shops. A number of old buildings on the harbour have been renovated, including Little Creatures Brewery, which occupies a former boat shed and crocodile farm, and contains a café and art gallery. The harbour's annual Fremantle Sardine Festival on Esplanade Park attracts thousands of seafood lovers every year. Other annual events held at the harbour include Araluen's Fremantle Chilli Festival, the Fremantle Boat Show, and the traditional Italian Blessing of the Fleet ceremony.
Fremantle—along with the inner suburbs Northbridge, Leederville and Subiaco—is one of Perth's major nightlife hubs. It attracts people from all over the metropolitan region for its pubs, bars and nightclubs. There are several major annual festivals in Fremantle. First held in 1906, the Fremantle Festival is Australia's longest running community festival. International street performers converge for the Fremantle Street Arts Festival, held over the Easter holiday period. The Fremantle Heritage Festival celebrates local history with a variety of events, tours, concerts and workshops.

york residency museum WA WESTERN AUSTRALIA

York is the oldest inland town in Western Australia, situated 97 km east of Perth in the Avon Valley near Northam, and is the seat of the Shire of York. Home to an estimated 3,289 people in 2005, it was settled in 1831, only two years after Perth was settled in 1829.
History
With the increasing population of the then Swan River Settlement in 1829, it became evident that suitable land would have to be discovered for the growing of cereal crops needed to provide necessary food.
Robert Dale, 21 year old Officer of the 63rd Regiment, was assigned the honour of making the first exploratory journey over the Darling Range during the winter months of 1830 into what was later to become known as the Avon Valley.
As a result of these explorations, Governor Stirling decided that the new district would be thrown open for selection and this was done by Government Notice on 11 November 1830.
Named after the city of York in England, the first settlers in the district reached the valley on 15 September 1831, and immediately set about the construction of huts, the preparation required for their stock and the cultivation of new land.
The first decade of settlement in the Avon Valley showed steady progress and a clear indication that the whole district should develop into a rich and prosperous farming area.
A township did not begin to appear until 1836 when an army barracks and store were built. It then began to take shape and great improvements were noted as private and Government buildings were erected.[1]
By this time the Aboriginal population was beginning to realise the full impact of European colonisation, and to offer understandable resistance. Soldiers were sent from Perth to protect settlers and by 1836 the nucleus of the township was in place, consisting of an army barracks and store with outbuildings, five houses and about 50 acres of cleared land. The first inland town of the Swan River Colony was born, and the story of its subsequent development is traced in the York Heritage Trail’s four walks.
By the late 1880s the town was teeming with miners and fossickers, all alighting from the train and preparing to make the long journey across the plains to the goldfields. It was during the period 1886 to 1900 that most of the town's impressive buildings were constructed.
