-- About this video --
Today we’re taking the TranzAlpine Train in New Zealand! It’s considered one of the world’s most scenic train trips. Watch this video to see what it’s like to take a return journey with the KiwiRail TranzAlpine Train between Christchurch and Greymouth. It’s one of the great ways to travel across the South Island.
Admittedly, there is not much in the way of train travel in New Zealand, but with what New Zealand trains they do have, they are pretty amazing. The New Zealand TranzAlpine goes from Christchurch to Greymouth where the train goes through Arthur’s Pass National Park in the Southern Alps. The Arthur’s Pass train station is one of the stops before travelling through the Otira Tunnel, which is 8.5km long.
So what do you think of this South Island train journey? Would you add the Christchurch Greymouth Train / Greymouth Christchurch train to your South Island travel itinerary? Would you use this way to travel the South Island? LUK in the comments.

Places to visit in South Island New Zealand - Arthurs Pass
Arthurs Pass, South Island New Zealand
One of the many great passes in the South Island of New Zealand. Amazing scenery as you drive along this road. Waterfalls, wildlife, snowy capped mountains, rivers, bouldering, hiking, and plenty of places to pull over and take some photos! Arthurs Pass really is much more than a road from A to B. Make sure you allocate a couple of days to travel through the Pass. You can stay overnight at Lake Pearson on the way. Also feel free to check out some of our other videos on places we have visited around New Zealand and the World!

Tranz-Alpine Express NZ
Truly one of the world's great scenic train trips through the dramatic contrast of dry beech forests and tussock land on one side of the Alps and lush green landscapes on the other.
From Christchurch, cross the patchwork farmland of the Canterbury plains, follow the Waimakariri river, climbing into alpine scenery on a series of spectacular viaducts. Then, after stopping at Arthur's Pass, emerge from the long Otira Tunnel and descend through sub tropical rain forest past beautiful Lake Brunner and on to Greymouth. (

NZ - TRANZ ALPINE EXPRESS.m4v
Dear All,
This April-May we went to the land of the Long White Cloud....Aotearoa as it is called in Maori. - New Zealand.
The word Picture-Postcard would be an understatement when one has to describe the beauty of New Zealand.
I believe that the creator delivered his best in this place.
This Video is about one of the top things to do while you are here.
Riding the Tranz-Alpine railway.
The TranzAlpine Christchurch to Greymouth, is rated as one of the worlds great scenic railway journeys. Coast to coast.
The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the train one can see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River.
It is the climb to the Southern Alps that leaves the viewer spellbound.
The train has a open air viewing carriage which allows the viewer to get up close to the stunning scenery and provides many opportunities to photograph the favourite spots.
The train journey sets off from Christchurch - New Zealand's largest city on the South Island. The trip is 223.8 kilometres long and takes just four and a half hours. There are 19 tunnels, and 4 viaducts, the highest at 73 metres.
The TranzAlpine makes one return journey every day.
We travelled upto Arthur's Pass - the highest pass in the route.
The eastern side of the divide is characterised by wide, shingle-filled riverbeds and vast beech forests. The western side...where wet weather is more common than dry, has deeply gorged rivers flowing through dense rainforest.
Down the middle of 'the great divide' is an alpine dreamland of snow-covered peaks, glaciers and scree slopes.
I would like to go back and the do the route one more time... it is that good !!
will upload the rest of the stuff soon
regards
hari

TranzAlpine train from Arthur's Pass to Christchurch
We returned our rented car in Greymouth, the largest town on the west coast of South Island, and from there took the world-famous TranzAlpine train back to Christchurch. Once we have arrived at the train station, we were told the TranzAlpine is partly suspended between Arthur's Pass and Greymouth due to prolonged heavy rains that have resulted in a slip blocking the railway tracks near Omoto. The train company has arranged a replacement bus service between Greymouth and Arthur's Pass, and from there we will continue our journey by train back to Christchurch, and they will give us 50% refund which is not a bad deal considering the most scenic train ride is actually from Arthur's Pass to Christchurch anyway. The total journey took about 4.5 hours and it doesn't disappoint...

NZ South Island Road Trip Part 1- Christchurch to Moana via Arthur's Pass (4K Video)
This video is about our road trip around the north part of New Zealand South Island back in 2016. We started from Christchurch, drove to Greymouth via Arthur's Pass, up to Nelson via west coast, then back to Christchurch via east coast. It was an amazing trip. Some of my previous videos covered places like Castle Hill, Pancake Rocks, Abel Tasman National Park, Blue Pool...It is also my first time using Final Cut Pro to edit the video. I have to say goodbye to iMovie now since FCP is way much better!
Day 10 - Christchurch to Mt Cook National Park
A drive from the coast at Christchurch, New Zealand, to the mountains, via Lake Tekapi and Lake Pukaki, with amazing views of Mount Cook from Lake Pukaki, in lovely sunshine.

Discover New Zealand - Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Arthur's Pass and more.
In this video we take a look around Christchurch both before and after the 2011 Earthquake. We also look at some of the other attractions and experiences available in and around the area, such as; the vintage trams, Ferrymead Heritage Park, Christchurch International Antarctic Centre, Willowbank Zoo, Christchurch Gondola, Banks Peninsula and Whale Watch Kaikoura. We also experience the desolate magnificence of Aurthur’s Pass as we view the awesome scenery from both the road and the “TranzAlpine” train. Christchurch is not only the start/terminus for the world famous “TranzAlpine”, but also the equally scenic “Coastal Pacific” train that hugs the Pacific shoreline to connect with the Wellington ferry. Christchurch is rebuilding after the devastating quakes and tourists can be sure of a warm welcome with both plenty to see and do.

Arthur's Pass & TranzAlpine KiwiRail
South Island, New Zealand - Part 9 Arthur's Pass & TranzAlpine KiwiRail (28/11-11/12/2012)
AB 608 Centennial S.I Tour Day 15: Arthurs Pass to Waipara 2/11/2015
On Monday 2 November 2015, Day 15 of the AB 608 Centennial South Island Rail Tour, AB 608 Passchendaele ran her Tour Train numbered X016 from Arthurs Pass to Christchurch, where the train number became G014 as it continued on to Waipara along the Main North line. The first few minutes of this video shows a variety of video shots of Kea's, as seen from the turntable area. The first shot of AB 608 after the Kea shots, shows AB 608's tender overflowing with water, after being topped up with water and then the water hose being rolled up. Next, I got video shots that show AB 608 slowly leaving the Arthurs Pass turntable, passing DFB 7241, heading towards Rough Creek to change tracks and heading slowly back down the track and passing DFB 7241 again, as AB 608 collects her 6 carriages. Then, I got shots of the Tranz Alpine sitting at Arthurs Pass station, ETM's 255 & 323 passing DFB 7241 as they head back into the yard, AB 608 Passchendaele heading out of the yard with her carriages and then running back down into the platform on the North side of Arthurs Pass station. At the station, AB 608 took on more water to keep the water tank full and passengers progressively boarded the tour train. A few minutes later, railfans were seen at the east end of the station, waiting for the Tranz Alpine, as the Tranz Alpine got ready to depart and is then seen departing Arthurs Pass station behind DFB 7241 & DXC 5425. AB 608 is then seen eagerly waiting to depart Arthurs Pass station and then departing from Arthurs Pass. AB 608 is next seen approaching the Bealey river bridge and going over the Craigieburn Rd crossing, before Cass bank. At Cass bank, AB 608 Passchendaele preformed a fabulous photo run and is seen leaving Cass bank afterwards. At Springfield, I got a shot of the Springfield yard as seen from the hill, AB 608 approaching Pocock Rd crossing as she arrived into Sprignfield and then departing Springfield Station. As AB 608 Passchendaele continued her journey to Waipara, I caught her at the Darfield Fonterra crossing, Darfield (from M 141 at the Whitecliffs historical site), Kirwee, where the driver put on a good display of whistling and speed, Templeton and arriving into Christchurch station, Addington. At Christchurch station, a short break was made and some of the passengers came off the train. The final shot shows AB 608 Passchendaele heading through Riccarton, approaching the Fendalton Rd crossing, as she heads north to Waipara and the Weka Pass Railway.

Arthur's Pass, New Zealand
At the very heart of the South Island, between the West Coast and Canterbury, is Arthur's Pass National Park. Covering over 1,000 square kilometres, it's a park of two halves, with heavy rainforest and formidable gorges to the west, and more accessible valleys, tracks and broad river beds to the east.
