More information about Newmarket taken from Wikipedia:
Newmarket is an Auckland suburb to the south-east of the central business district. With its high building density, especially of retail shops, it is considered New Zealand's premier retailing area, and a rival of local competitor Auckland CBD.
While as early as 1873, Newmarket has been referred to as a 'suburb' of Auckland, in fact until the amalgamation of the borough councils into Auckland City Council in 1989, local governance was by the Newmarket Borough Council, with its own Mayor.
The borough, while one of the smallest in the Auckland Region, was also one of the busiest. This is especially true of Broadway, the main street, which has large shopping centres and smaller retail tenancies (with a total of over 400 stores as of mid-2010), two movie theatres, and numerous restaurants, bars and cafés.
The Maori called this area, particularly the south of the current Newmarket, Te Tī Tūtahi, 'the cabbage tree standing alone' or 'the cabbage tree of singular importance', referring to a tree which stood on the corner of Mortimer Pass and Broadway (according to other references at the corner of Clovernook Road and Broadway) until 1908.
Some of the cabbage trees in the area are descended from this tree, after Alfred Buckland rescued a portion and replanted trees around Newmarket and as far away as Bucklands Beach.
In the general area of Nuffield Street / Mahuru Street, no remnants today are visible of the Mahuru Spring, once sacred to the local Maori iwi. It is noted that the spring was named after the Maori word for the season of spring.
The earliest subdivision of land in this location took place in June 1841. In 1842 Epsom Road was formed, running from the bottom of town up through Parnell towards the middle of the Auckland isthmus. This was later called Manukau Road before being given its current name, Parnell Road.
The position of Newmarket at the start of several major roads to the east and south, including Great South Road, was to strongly influence its character as a transport hub and Gateway to the South.
In 1845 Khyber Pass Road was formed and the intersection of these three roads was called Hobson's Bridge referring to a small wooden bridge that crossed over Hobson's creek (more or less where the railway track passes near the Olympic Swimming Pool).
A very small bridge was the most noteworthy landmark of the area, giving some idea of the rather empty nature of the landscape.
Around 1851 this area received the name Newmarket because it was the site of the 'New Market' for livestock. Farmers would drive their stock up the Manukau, Great South, or Remuera Roads to the market which was better situated than the earlier stock market in Auckland proper.
The presence of the a local railway station connecting it with Auckland, opened in 1873 after the completion of the first Parnell Tunnel, was also a great advantage. The market was located to the south of Remuera Road and east of Manukau Road.
Overlooking Newmarket on a bluff to the south east is a 19th-century wooden house in the Gothic style called Highwic. The home of a local businessman Alfred Buckland, Highwic is now owned by the Auckland Council and administered by Heritage New Zealand.
Another piece of Auckland land owned by Alfred Buckland located further out of town is still called Bucklands Beach.
Hope you learnt something new! Look forward to catching you next Friday! :)

Creating a world-class city centre
Seascape Marketing Video
Standing 187 metres high, Seascape will be the tallest residential tower in New Zealand and a magnificent sculptural addition to the Auckland Skyline. The striking design - with its angular glass form and lattice mega-brace - is the product of a dynamic collaboration between developers, Shundi and architects, Peddle Thorp.
Its name speaks to its waterfront location just one block back from the sparkling Waitemata Harbour, but also to the inspiration that has driven this project from its conception: creating north facing apartments with floor-to-ceiling glass framing spectacular water views of the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf.
Located on the edge of Britomart at 83 Customs Street East in the Auckland CBD, Seascape occupies a full city block and is bounded by Custom Street East, Gore Street, Gore Street Lane and Fort Street. The glass tower - which contains 221 luxurious apartments including 15 stunning penthouses and sub-penthouses – sits upon a seven storey mixed-use podium which has retail and commercial tenancies and residents’ amenities. The full project includes the re-cladding, refurbishment and seismic strengthening of Ballantyne House - an existing 12-storey concrete office building on the eastern edge of the site - into a boutique hotel - and refurbishment of the heritage Britomart Hotel on the western edge.
Seascape is a landmark building in every sense; a bold, iconic design on a prominent central city site that will deliver new levels of luxury and glamour to downtown Auckland. Construction has already begun so you can buy with confidence knowing that you are investing in a world-class development by a well-funded international developer.

More information on Auckland from Wikipedia:
Auckland is a city in New Zealand's North Island. Auckland is the largest urban area in the country, with an urban population of around 1,534,700. It is located in the Auckland Region—the area governed by Auckland Council—which includes outlying rural areas and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, resulting in a total population of 1,657,200.
A diverse and multicultural city, Auckland is home to the largest Polynesian population in the world. The Māori-language name for Auckland is Tāmaki or Tāmaki-makau-rau, meaning with a hundred lovers, in reference to the desirability of its fertile land at the hub of waterways in all directions. It has also been called Ākarana, a transliteration of the English name.
The Auckland urban area ranges to Waiwera in the north, Kumeu in the northwest, and Runciman in the south. Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, the low Hunua Ranges to the south-east, the Manukau Harbour to the south-west, and the Waitakere Ranges and smaller ranges to the west and north-west.
The surrounding hills are covered in rainforest and the landscape is dotted with dozens of dormant volcanic cones. The central part of the urban area occupies a narrow isthmus between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea and the Waitematā Harbour on the Pacific Ocean.
Auckland is one of the few cities in the world to have a harbour on each of two separate major bodies of water.
The isthmus on which Auckland resides was first settled around 1350 and was valued for its rich and fertile land. The Māori population in the area is estimated to have peaked at 20,000 before the arrival of Europeans.
After a British colony was established in 1840, William Hobson, then Governor of New Zealand, chose the area as his new capital. He named the area for George Eden, Earl of Auckland, British First Lord of the Admiralty.
It was replaced as the capital in 1865 by Wellington, but immigration to the new city stayed strong, and it has remained the country's most populous urban area.
Today, Auckland's central business district is the major financial centre of New Zealand.
Auckland is classified as a Beta + World City because of its importance in commerce, the arts, and education. The University of Auckland, established in 1883, is the largest university in New Zealand.
Landmarks such as the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, the Harbour Bridge, the Sky Tower, and many museums, parks, restaurants, and theatres are among the city's significant tourist attractions.
Auckland Airport handles around one million international passengers a month. Despite being one of the most expensive cities in the world, Auckland is ranked third on the 2016 Mercer Quality of Living Survey, making it one of the most liveable cities.
The isthmus was settled by Māori circa 1350, and was valued for its rich and fertile land. Many pā (fortified villages) were created, mainly on the volcanic peaks.
The Māori population in the area is estimated to have been about 20,000 before the arrival of Europeans. The introduction of firearms at the end of the eighteenth century, which began in Northland, upset the balance of power and led to devastating intertribal warfare beginning in 1807, causing iwi who lacked the new weapons to seek refuge in areas less exposed to coastal raids.
As a result, the region had relatively low numbers of Māori when European settlement of New Zealand began. However, there is nothing to suggest that this was the result of a deliberate European policy.
On 27 January 1832, Joseph Brooks Weller, eldest of the Weller brothers of Otago and Sydney, bought land including the site of the modern city of Auckland, the North Shore, and part of Rodney District for one large cask of powder from Cohi Rangatira.
Hope you guys learnt something new! Catch you soon! :)

Kohekohe church, Awhitu, Auckland
Kohekohe church, Awhitu, Auckland
In the early October, we went to the small town Waiuku, and explored the popular places in this region, such as Manukau Heads Lighthouse, and Awhitu regional park.
On the way to the Lighthouse, we saw this historical Kohekohe church, as this church had been sold to the private owner, we only filmed outside the fence.
I found one article from the website regarding the story of this church
It is an iconic sort of building and New Zealand has pulled down so many of its buildings, says Patsy, who bought the church in September 2012 with business partner and fellow teacher, Antonella Coppolino. In those four years Patsy has learned that the church was built during the Tarawera eruptions in 1886. Papers Past noted the builders were high enough up to see this glow in the sky and to hear the rumble.
It was used as a Presbyterian church, until decommissioned in 1976. Outside is a memorial to the church's worshippers.
The church, I think, has always been on that plot of land, she says. Some people used to walk across to that church across a lot of paddocks. People who went there when they were young, and I am talking about people now in their 70s and 80s, think that the church has been moved but, actually, the road has been changed.
When Patsy and Antonella bought the church, it had been unused for 35 years.

PAK'nSAVE Blenheim is now open!
A large crowd or approximately 250 was in attendance to see the new $25m PAK'nSAVE Blenheim being officially opened by the Mayor of Marlborough, Alistair Sowman at 9am Tuesday, March 19 2013.
A large crowd or approximately 250 was in attendance to see the new $25m PAK'nSAVE Blenheim being officially opened by the Mayor of Marlborough, Alistair Sowman at 9am Tuesday, March 19 2013.
Also in attendance was Foodstuffs South Island Ltd CEO, Steve Anderson and the company's board.
The 6000sqm supermarket on Middle Renwick Rd, part of the Westwood development, has taken a year to complete and ushers in a new era of shopping for the town, with its large car park, on site fuel pumps, self-scan checkouts, free wifi, coffee-to-go outlet and most importantly, low prices.
Mark Elkington, owner of the new supermarket, said that the carpark had been full for the entire morning. We had between 500 and 600 transactions in the first few hours of trading.
This is a very exciting time for Blenheim - the PAK'nSAVE philosophy is all about delivering groceries at the lowest possible price, and we will certainly be offering the lowest food prices in Blenheim. Our customers are going to find a significant difference and we know they are going to be pleasantly surprised at how much they will save on their weekly groceries.
Mark says there will be some very attractive deals in the opening week.
People will see some prices they haven't seen in Blenheim before and as an opening treat we will be giving away 15,000 reuseable bags for people to pack their groceries in.
The supermarket will feature a huge 'aisle of value' including a range of grocery products, liquor and dairy products.
We're going to be the first PAK'nSAVE in the South Island to offer dairy products in our 'aisle of value'. Dairy is a big part of PAK'nSAVE - cheese, milk and so on - and we'll be including those staples in the aisle at a really cheap price.
Three entire bays in the store are devoted to gluten free products and in addition there will be some gluten free frozen items including a section in the bakery freezer.
We're very aware that this is a dietary necessity for many people today and our selection of foods that are gluten free will be significant.
With about 10,000 different product lines in store, the supermarket will cover all customer expectations including the provision of 330 car parks, and on site fuel pumps at which to redeem discount fuel vouchers.
Our customers will be able to take their voucher when they leave the store, and fill up at the pumps straight away. We're going to have staff helping with this in the first few weeks, but the pumps are self serve and people will easily learn the procedure.
The supermarket itself will have nine self-scan checkouts and 16 standard checkouts.
People can choose whichever they prefer. We will have a mixture of express self scan and full shop self scan checkouts. While shopping, customers will have free wifi use for checking their emails, and will be able to buy a fresh coffee-to-go from just inside the door.
PAK'nSAVE Blenheim will have 150 staff and be open daily from 7am-10pm.
PAK'nSAVE offers you more deals on fuel either through our onsite PAK'nSAVE FUEL pumps or as part of FuelUp.
