Augusta Georgia Woman is Filing Complaints Against A Local Judge
An Augusta Georgia woman is filing complaints against a local judge, after she says he has broken the law multiple times while handling her custody case.
We've been following stories on the family court system in the Augusta Judicial Circuit for over a year now---and now another woman has come forward alleging corruption in the system.
Shannon Baskin and her lawyer, Shannon Briley, both said there are several instances of an abuse of power when Judge Roper handled the custody case. The biggest flaw of all to Baskin, is that Judge Roper awarded custody of her daughter to an ex-boyfriend who had no biological or legal ties to the child, and she wants to know why.
What matters is what is right and what is wrong, what is just and what is unjust. And what is just is to have my daughter be with me, Baskin said.

Augusta, GA - Supercharger Review
This is the original Augusta Supercharger, I give it a 6 out of 10, you can find it at the Hilton Garden Inn, the navigation system will make it look like you should take the turn I did, don’t do that, take the next turn instead. There are a few fast food and other restaurants on the way in or if you need the walk they are on the far-ish side across the local highway so not recommended, especially in the dark.

Discover Augusta--Georgia's Business Address
From its temperate climate to the year-round beauty of its parks and gardens, there's a lot to draw newcomers to Augusta, the Garden City.
Augusta is Georgia's second-largest city, and it's the second-oldest city in the state. Founded in 1736 by General James Edward Oglethorpe, Augusta was named in honor of Princess Augusta, the wife of Fredrick, Prince of Wales. A large bronze-cast statue of General Oglethorpe stands at the center of Augusta's newest urban park, Augusta Commons, in the 800 block of downtown's Broad Street. A glimpse at the list of museums in and around Augusta reveals much about the rich and varied past of the city, along with clues to its future.
With nearly half a million residents, the Augusta area has a variety of amenities, including a vibrant arts community and many fine restaurants. And unlike other growing cities in the Southeast, the area has fewer of the traffic snarls that plague so many metropolitan areas.
In addition to the low cost of living and affordable housing, Augusta offers its residents a beautiful historic city with a diverse culture, active arts community and mild climate.
The Augusta area is known for its balmy climate, with an annual average temperature of 64 degrees. Some studies suggest its location between the Atlantic and Gulf coasts contributes to generally mild winters. Those warm winters turned the region into a seasonal resort in the late 1800s and early 1900s and gave Augusta much of its early reputation for hospitality and warmth.
When it comes to events in Augusta, there's the Masters Tournament and then there's everything else. This isn't to say there isn't any other event that draws out-of-towners to the area, but golf's premiere event is such a big deal, even schools let out for that one week in April. The Masters Tournament is held on the beautiful grounds of Augusta National Golf Club. Augusta and the surrounding area boast 21 private and 15 public golf courses. Another major event in Augusta is the largest Half-Ironman competition in the U.S.
Water recreation is also prominent. Several state parks dot the area, including Elijah Clark & Mistletoe state parks. Thurmond Lake is one of the largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River, with a 1,200-mile shoreline that is longer than the entire U.S. eastern seaboard.
Be it opera or orchestra, diva or dancer, the Augusta area has a stage suited to the needs of most performers. Ranging in size from intimate to expansive, each venue fills a performance niche. Augusta's Westabou Festival and the Arts in The Heart annual events highlight the city's vibrant arts opportunities.
Augusta is the center of shopping for the entire MSA, with a variety of downtown shops and suburban shopping centers and malls. A resurgence in downtown Augusta is occurring monthly, solidifying this area as the region’s town center.
Health care continues to be one of the strongest employment sectors in Augusta, recognized as a regional health care provider. The area also is building a reputation as a leading medical research center.
From its pair of airports to multiple taxicab companies and a citywide public transit system, the Garden City's transportation offerings reflect a diverse set of services.

DR. BECKLES VS. THE RICHMOND COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION: A HERO WHO STOOD AGAINST INJUSTICE
By Author: Dr. Nathan Van Sertima
Community leader Rev. Dr. Franklyn Beckles, Jr., a former Richmond County School Teacher and famous children’s rights advocate helped to achieve an historic Civil Rights Crusade against injustice and bullying in Richmond County Public Schools on June 5, 2013 – in Augusta Georgia. He was followed by his wife Adrian, son Christian, and a large group of supporters who marched from Pyramid Music on Broad Street to the Richmond County Board of Education Office in protest to the rapid abuse of children in public schools and to expose the corruption, racism, and history of scandals by the Richmond County Board of Education. The group delivered a petition to the incompetent School Superintendent Frank Roberson requesting the removal of the embattled and dishonest Copeland Elementary School Principal Kim Davis, proving that she had disrespected parents, disregarded their civil rights and aided in abusing students. The Civil Rights Leader Dr. Franklyn V. Beckles, Jr., was the only man in the community with the courage to address the crisis of racial injustice in schools and businesses in the Central Savannah River Area, primarily in Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Beckles successfully led the fight against public school injustice and corruption, as did his father Aiken Technical College Professor Franklyn V. Beckles, Sr., in Aiken South Carolina where he established the first successful all-black private school (Aiken Academy), to combat the public school dropout rate of minority children inspired by the Aiken County Board of Education. In most cases the victims are usually African American men and boys- (read book “The Conspiracy against Black Boys”)...
Kirby's Augusta - The Last Mayor of the City
Consolidated Augusta Richmond County has a new mayor and we wish him well.
But before the city and county joined their governments almost 20 years ago, our town had had its own to leader for close to two centuries.
And some people think the best one was the last.
Charles A. DeVaney was a young Augusta city councilman in the early 1980s when he took over when then-mayor Ed McIntyre was convicted of bribery and extortion.
Tall, eloquent, musically talented, DeVaney would be re-elected mayor four times, leaving office on the day the consolidation of Augusta and Richmond County became official.
He died in 2007 from a heart ailment while returning from a trip where he had picked up a large donation for the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation, an organization he was directing at the time.
Most Augustans remember the Charles DeVaney as a friend, a gentleman, a scholar and a statesman.
Former Mayor Bob Young said the most visible elements of the legacy are the Riverwalk and the Augusta Riverfront Center, which includes the Marriott hotel, conference center and office building that was partially funded with federal grants during his tenure.
The Port Royal tower, Artists Row, the city Marina and Boathouse and the trees on Broad Street and Walton Way were projects completed during DeVaney's tenure, Young said.
The Historic Preservation ordinances for the Bethlehem neighborhood and Summerville were adopted to protect those neighborhoods while Charles was mayor, Young said. There's so much to see that Charles had a hand in.
Dayton Sherrrouse, who often clashed with Devaney over city vs. county issues said, “He was representing what he felt was the interests of the city. He was fighting to get every penny for the city that he could get. So I can't fault him for it, but there were some tough conversations and negotiations.
Things weren’t perfect for DeVaney. Despite Augusta development on his watch, the city bank account dwindled and finances from its tax base waned. DeVaney quietly used revenues from the water department to keep going.
By 1995, that didn’t work any more and the handwriting was on the wall.
The city of Augusta and the county of Richmond consolidated – joining forces as many other communities had done in Georgia, hoping to save money by avoiding duplication of civic services
But when his political service ended, a very active and commendable time in public service began.
DeVaney became executive director of Augusta Tomorrow, then interim president of the Augusta Neighborhood Improvement Corp., then the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation, associated with the nationally known Joseph M. Still Burn Foundation at Doctors Hospital.
.DeVaney showed us all that you don't have to have the power of a political office to do good things, make a difference or bring about change.
While his work now remains for others to carry on, Mr. DeVaney has already shown us all a way to do it.
Charlest DeVaney left Augusta with many things.
And one of them is a mystery.
The last mayor of the city of Augusta, is not buried in the city of Augusta.
He’s not buried in Richmond County.
He’s not even buried in Georgia.
He’s buried in Sunset Hill Cemtery in North Augusta, Aiken County, South Carolina.
WHY?
Well, I AM TOLD, that it was his mother’s decision. She was still alive when Charles died. She owned the cemetery plot here and she wanted him buried beside her because she was devoted to her son, just like her son was devoted to Augusta.
He might resting here, but he left his legacy on our side of the river.

Kirby's Augusta - The Lenox Theatre
While many Augusta theaters through the early decades of the 1900s offered seating for black patrons in the back, there was one place where black folks could sit front and center for the latest shows and movies – The Lenox on the 1100 block of Ninth Street.
Today, the spot where thousands of black Augustans shows movies, features and even musical performances featuring Ray Charles, Ethel Waters or Ma Rainey is a vacant lot with of weeds and dirt. But from the 1920s into the 1960s, this was a center of Augusta’s black entertainment.
They say James Brown won his first talent contest there.
It was built in 1920 at a cost of more than $100,000 (more than a million dollars today) by Augusta’s premier architect Lloyd Preacher.
Preacher also designed the Imperial Theater, the Richmond Hotel and even the News Building, home of The Chronicle.
A review published in The Augusta Chronicle on Jan. 9, 1921, described the Lenox as the finest most beautiful and best equipped theater in this country owned and controlled by the colored people.
It was built thanks to the funding of four black Augustans - physician G.N. Stoney; caterer John P. Waring; postal worker John Norflett; and postal worker-turned-banker William H. Wilborn.
Some might ask today why Augusta’s thriving black community would need its own theater? Well, like many communities at this time in the American South and elsewhere, blacks were segregated from whites in theaters. In Augusta, they could go to the Imperial, but they had to use a side entrance and they had to sit in the balcony, an area so high and far from the stage and screen, it was derisively called “the buzzard’s roost.”
Not so at the Lenox.
Upon opening, patrons stepped through a giant arch into a large lobby with tile floors and mural decorations on the wall.
Entering the theater itself, guests saw more than 570 seats on the orchestra floor and an additional 300 seats in the balcony.
It was heated during the winter by gas-steam radiators and cooled in the summers by a mighty cyclone fan, according to The Augusta Chronicle archives.
You've heard of turn-away business? the son of one of the theater managers recalled years ago. We had people lined up from the theater's box office to a block down to Gwinnett Street (now Laney-Walker Boulevard).
It helped that The Lenox was part of several Augusta city blocks on Ninth Street called the Golden Blocks, where black businesses thrived.
Then something good happened. In the mid-1950s and ‘60s, segregation died.
Then something bad happened. The Lenox and other businesses in the Golden Blocks eventually deteriorated as blacks began frequenting white-owned establishments.
The theater was further damaged Jan. 31, 1966, by a fire that caused extensive damage. Although historical documents on the theater are scant During this period, old city directories show that the theater appears to have been renovated and continued operating into the early 1970s.
With the changing times, however, the theater did not make it to the end of the decade.
In 1974, a teenage girl was found stabbed to death in the abandoned theater and four years later, the city ordered the building torn down.
The city had acquired the property in a tax lien case.
In September 1978, the Lenox – like many of Augusta’s very special places -- was demolished.
It lives today like much of Augusta’s past, in old photos and older memories.
That’s where you find so many of our town’s old showplaces – white or black.
