The Cradle Will Rock
The SOUTH AFRICAN PREMIERE of the musical: THE CRADLE WILL ROCK will be presented by the OAKFIELDS COLLEGE FACULTY OF DANCE AND MUSICAL THEATRE at the AUTO & GENERAL THEATRE ON THE SQUARE in SANDTON from the 13th - 21st November 2015.
The Cradle Will Rock was first created in 1937 by Marc Blitzstein and is an allegory set in fictional ‘Steeltown, USA’. It is a tale of the fight against corruption, class divisions and corporate greed - themes which are certainly as relevant today as any other.
The Cradle Will Rock was the first American musical from a working class perspective, and the first to address the contentious battles between company owners and labour unions, which were popping up (often in the midst of bloody, violent conflicts) all over America during that period. At a time when the idea of the redistribution of wealth and expansive rights for workers was becoming increasingly seductive, the subject matter of The Cradle Will Rock was considered so controversial, that the US government banned the show from opening, sending the army to close down the theatre where it was supposed to premiere. This did not stop the creators, who found a different theatre and defiantly opened that same night!
The plot follows the efforts of Larry Foreman to unionise local workers and combat wicked, greedy businessman Mr. Mister who controls the town's industrial and social organisations. Although the subject matter is weighty, it is presented in the form of a Brechtian-styled, musical comedy, portraying characters such as Editor Daily, Harry Druggist, Junior Mister, Dr. Specialist and Reverend Salvation. Blitzstein’s score boldly mingles jazz, popular song, church chorales, marches, arias and recitative - and is sure to keep audiences intrigued, outraged and amused from start to finish.
Acclaimed professionals: Elizma Badenhorst (director) and Wessel Odendaal (musical director) have worked with the Oakfields College dance and musical theatre students to present a truly outstanding South African premier of The Cradle Will Rock!
Performances take place every week night at 20h15 and Saturdays 18h00 and 20h30.

He deals the cards as a meditation
And those he plays never suspect
He doesn't play for the money he wins
He don't play for respect
He deals the cards to find the answer
The sacred geometry of chance
The hidden law of a probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
He may play the jack of diamonds
He may lay the queen of spades
He may conceal a king in his hand
While the memory of it fades

SUMMARY
=======
Johannesburg (; Afrikaans: [jʊəˈɦanəsbœrχ]; also known as Jozi, Joburg, and eGoli) is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world. It is the provincial capital and largest city of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. While Johannesburg is not one of South Africa's three capital cities, it is the seat of the Constitutional Court. The city is located in the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills and is the centre of large-scale gold and diamond trade. The metropolis is an alpha global city as listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. In 2011, the population of the city of Johannesburg was 4,434,827, making it the most populous city in South Africa. In the same year, the population of Johannesburg's urban agglomeration was put at 7,860,781. The land area of the municipal city (1,645 km2 (635 sq mi)) is large in comparison with those of other major cities, resulting in a moderate population density of 2,364/km2 (6,120/sq mi).
The city was established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what had been a farm. The city is commonly interpreted as the modern day El Dorado due to the extremely large gold deposit found along the Witwatersrand. The name is attributed to one or all of three men involved in the establishment of the city. In ten years, the population grew to 100,000 inhabitants.
A separate city from the late 1970s until 1994, Soweto is now part of Johannesburg. Originally an acronym for South-Western Townships, Soweto originated as a collection of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg, populated mostly by native African workers from the gold mining industry. Soweto, although eventually incorporated into Johannesburg, had been separated as a residential area for Blacks, who were not permitted to live in Johannesburg proper. Lenasia is predominantly populated by English-speaking South Africans of Indian descent. These areas were designated as non-white areas in accordance with the segregationist policies of the South African government known as Apartheid.
