Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town in England’s West Midlands, is the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Possibly the most famous writer in the English language, Shakespeare is known for his sonnets and plays such as 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Hamlet'. The Royal Shakespeare Company performs his plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and adjacent Swan Theatre on the banks of the River Avon.
Stratford upon Avon is a market town and civil parish in Warwickshire, England, on the River Avon, 101 miles (163 km) north west of London, 22 miles (35 km) south east of Birmingham, and 8 miles (13 km) south west of Warwick. Stratford was originally inhabited by Anglo-Saxons and remained a village before lord of the manor, John of Coutances, set out plans to develop it into a town in 1196. In that same year, Stratford was granted a charter from King Richard I to hold a weekly market in the town, giving it its status as a market town. As a result, Stratford experienced an increase in trade and commerce as well as urban expansion.
Stratford upon Avon is a popular tourist destination owing to its status as birthplace of English playwright and poet William Shakespeare, and receives approximately 2.5 million visitors a year. The Royal Shakespeare Company resides in Stratford's Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Stratford is 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Birmingham. It is close to the Cotswolds, with Chipping Campden 10 miles (16 km) to the south. Suburbs and areas of the town include Shottery, Bishopton, Bridgetown, Tiddington, and Old Town.
Stratford is 22 miles (35 km) from the UK's second largest city, Birmingham, and is easily accessible from junction 15 of the M40 motorway. Stratford-upon-Avon railway station has good rail links from Birmingham (Snow Hill station, Moor Street station) and from London, with up to seven direct trains a day from London Marylebone. Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway railway station opened on 19 May 2013 to the north of the town.

The 'Swans' of Stratford-upon-Avon - England
Swans:
Swans are birds of the family Anatidae within the genus Cygnus. The swans' close relatives include the geese and ducks. Swans are grouped with the closely related geese in the subfamily Anserinae where they form the tribe Cygnini. Sometimes, they are considered a distinct subfamily, Cygninae. There are six or seven species of swan in the genus Cygnus; in addition there is another species known as the coscoroba swan, although this species is no longer considered one of the true swans. Swans usually mate for life, though divorce does sometimes occur, particularly following nesting failure, and if a mate dies, the remaining swan will take up with another. The number of eggs in each clutch ranges from three to eight.

Prince Charles tours Stratford-upon-Avon During Shakespeare anniversary
The Prince of Wales has visited Stratford-upon-Avon to mark 400 years since William Shakespeare's death.
The playwright was born and raised in the Warwickshire market town, and returned there when he retired.
Prince Charles was shown around Shakespeare's family home, viewed the gardens and visited an exhibition.
He will be joined later by the Duchess of Cornwall for Shakespeare Live - a televised performance celebrating the playwright's life.
During his visit to the town, Prince Charles visited Holy Trinity Church, and laid a wreath on Shakespeare's grave.
On Saturday morning, US President Barack Obama visited a London theatre dedicated to the work of the playwright.
The Globe theatre is a replica of the circular, open-air playhouse that Shakespeare designed in 1599.
Mr Obama watched a brief performance of a portion of Hamlet, including the famous To be or not to be soliloquy.
The scenes were performed by actors from a company of 16, who embarked on a two-year world tour in 2014 playing to more than 100,000 people in 197 countries.
Obama described the performance as wonderful.
As the US President toured the open-air theatre, he spent several minutes looking at the structure and asking questions about the seating and performances.
Dominic Dromgoole, artistic director of Shakespeare's Globe, said: At the end of an extraordinary journey all around the world, it is great to return home to the Globe, and to be able to perform a few scenes and to be welcomed back by President Barack Obama.
The spirit of 'Yes we can' has informed the entire tour, and it's an honour to meet the man who coined the phrase, and who exemplifies its spirit.
The US President made the trip before a visit to London's Royal Horticultural Halls where he urged young people to reject pessimism and cynicism and know that progress is possible and problems can be solved.
Throughout the day on Saturday, Shakespeare's Globe has been screening short films of every one of Shakespeare's 37 plays on giant screens along the banks of the Thames, between Tower Bridge and Westminster.
The films feature actors delivering their lines in the locations where the plays are set - such as Cleopatra in Egypt, Julius Caesar in the Roman Forum and Hamlet at Elsinore.
Among the star names involved in the project, entitled The Complete Walk, are Gemma Arterton, Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, James Norton, Zawe Ashton and Peter Capaldi.
On Saturday night, David Tennant hosts a BBC celebration broadcast live from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Performers at Shakespeare Live - which begins on BBC Two at 20:30 BST - include Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Helen Mirren and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Other names on the bill include Rory Kinnear, Meera Syal, Joseph Fiennes, David Suchet, Simon Russell Beale, Roger Allam, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Harriet Walter, John Lithgow, Anne-Marie Duff and the cast of Horrible Histories.
As well as theatrical performances, the show will feature hip-hop, blues, jazz, opera and classical music that has been inspired by Shakespeare's plays.
Celebrations in Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon began with a parade of people in Shakespearean costume earlier on Saturday.
BBC Radio 3 is also broadcasting a weekend of Shakespeare-inspired music and performance live from the Bard's hometown.
Elsewhere, leading arts organisations across the UK are making performances, analysis and talks available.
All material is being streamed on Shakespeare Day Live, a digital pop-up channel which kicks off Shakespeare Lives, a six month online festival.
