Calumet Fisheries & The Blues Brothers Bridge ~ 2019 ~ Exploring Chicago, Illinois
Calumet Fisheries is a seafood restaurant in the South Deering neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, United States, directly next to the 95th Street bridge (which appears in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers). It was originally established in 1928, and subsequently purchased in 1948 by Sid Kotlick and Len Toll. It serves smoked and fried fish, shrimp, and clams. The restaurant is often featured on TV shows and web series', such as Eater's Dining on a Dime and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. The building is a one-room shack with a counter and no seating. Patrons can take their food to go, or (more commonly) sit in their parked cars along 95th Street to eat. The restaurant uses a natural-wood smokehouse which has been in use since establishment. The smoking process involves smoking the fish overnight, before large fish (such as salmon, sturgeon, or sablefish) are usually cut into steaks, threaded with string, and hung from a smoking rack. Some salmon are smoked whole. Wood fires are built in the bottom of the smokehouse and the fish are cooked with the doors open; when complete, the doors are closed and the fish are smoked. Shrimp, clam strips, and smaller fish such as lake chub are smoked by tacking to a plank. Smoked fish were popular in the 1940s and 1950s, when shipping and fishing boat traffic were heavy on Chicago's waterways. The business began a slow decline over the decades, as the neighborhood and economy changed, and fried seafood was introduced to generate more sales. Due to declining demand, the owners had considered ending smoking and focusing on frying, until they were featured on No Reservations; a few days after the episode aired, patrons were lined up out the door and down the street, and sales continue to increase

⚫The woman allegedly didn't experience symptoms until several days later, and she is currently in isolation
⚫Health officials are testing 63 people across 22 states for the deadly virus
⚫Among them are four New Yorkers, one whose test came back negative and another three that are still pending

⚫The man, in his 30s, is currently being treated by a robot in a quarantined room at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett

⚫The US State Department issued a Level 4 Do Not Travel warning, its strongest travel alert only issued for places such as North Korea and Iran
The second US case of deadly coronavirus has been confirmed in Chicago, Illinois as dozens get tested across the country, including in New York, health officials say.
On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the patient is a 60-year-old woman who traveled to Wuhan, China - where the virus originated - in late December.
She arrived at O'Hare International Airport on January 13, meaning it has been 11 days since she returned to the US, but did not begin experiencing symptoms until several days later.
Health officials say the woman appears to be 'well' and in stable condition. She is in isolation, but it wasn't revealed which hospital she is in.
Meanwhile, the city of Wuhan is on lockdown with no one allowed to leave the city either by plane or bus
Other developments in the outbreak include:
Chinese New Year celebrations planned for this weekend have been canceled in Beijing and Hong Kong
Japan confirmed its second case and a fifth patient has been diagnosed in Thailand
Footage has emerged reportedly showing military personnel guarding a train station
Videos from inside hospitals show patients crammed into overcrowded corridors and laid on the floor
Photos have emerged of Chinese construction workers starting urgent building of a new hospital in Wuhan
It comes as health officials reveal they are testing 63 people in 22 states, including four people who were under isolation in New York state.
Doctors also announced that another 43 people came into contact with the first confirmed US patient - a man in his 30s - who is being quarantined in Washington state
So far, 945 people have fallen ill since December, mostly in China. As of Friday, 26 people have died.
In a tweet on Friday, President Donald Trump thanked President Xi Jinping and China for its 'transparency' in fighting coronavirus.
'China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!' Trump wrote.
'In 20 years of working on epidemic preparedness, I can't say that I've been more concerned than I am about the current virus,' Dr Richard Hatchett, CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations in Davos, Switzerland, told Channel 4.
He explained that the current virus can cause symptoms ranging from mild to severe, so people who may not know they're infected may be spread the disease.
'The problem is that people who have very mild illness in the middle of flu season...may not even realize that they have this virus and they may continue to move around, they may continue to spread the infection.'
Two people from Minnesota and three people from Michigan are currently being test for coronavirus.
'This patient did travel to the area of concern in China within the last 14 days and thankfully had mild upper respiratory symptoms, and he was improving,' said Dr Eric Wilke with the Brazos County Health Department.
'I believe the time the patient presented at the emergency department, it was more out of concern,' said Dr Eric Wilke with the Brazos County Health Department.

Visit to Chicago Illinois & The Willis (Sears) Tower
Per the website:
Willis (Sears) Tower
Once the world’s tallest building, Willis Tower (formerly known as Sears Tower) is still the USA's tallest building, and it's still way up in the clouds. Its observation platform - the Skydeck - draws 1.5 million people a year who are eager to ascend the 110-story, 1,454 foot (443 meter) building for awesome panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside.
Your journey to the top of the Willis Tower starts with a walk through an airport-style metal detector, followed by a slow elevator ride down to the waiting area where visitors queue for tickets. A sign will tell you how long you'll have to wait to get up high; this is a good time to confirm the visibility. Even days that seem sunny can have upper-level haze that limits the view. On good days, however, you can see for 40 to 50 miles (64 to 80 kilometers), as far as the states of Indiana, Michigan. Iowa, and Wisconsin.
While you wait, you can watch a film about Willis Tower factoids like its 43,000 miles (69,200 km) of phone cable and 2,232 steps to the roof. Then you'll wait a little longer before the ear-popping, 70 second elevator ride up to the 103rd floor deck. From here, the entire city stretches below, and you can see exactly how Chicago is laid out.
Willis Tower is located on the west side of the Loop, by the Chicago River, thus you’re a few blocks away from all Loop attractions and restaurants. The tower is easily accessible by bus and El trains. Allow at least an hour for a trip to the top, a stroll along the Skydeck, and back down to the ground. The Skydeck entrance is off of Jackson Boulevard.

Welcome back, everyone. Today we are going to look at why Illinois sucks. Illinois is becoming one of those places that lawyers and bail bondsmen are the only ones doing really well. This is one of the states that is on a downward trend with no relief on the horizon. Get car insurance, homeowners insurance, and life insurance if you are thinking about moving to Illinois.

HEADLINE: Nursing homes the new home for mentally-ill
CAPTION: More mentally ill people are being put in nursing homes nationwide alongside older patients, sometimes with tragic results. In Chicago, a 77-year-old man with Alzheimer's was fatally beaten, allegedly by his mentally-ill roommate. (March 23)
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST
ALL FAITH PAVILION ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A PLACE WHERE 77 YEAR OLD IVORY JACKSON WAS GOING TO SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE AS AN ALZHEIMER'S PATIENT.
Russell Smith/
I put my father in this nursing home under the assumption that he was going to get the love and the care that he needed.
RUSSELL SMITH COULD NO LONGER TAKE CARE OF HIS STEP-FATHER SO HE PUT HIM IN A NURSING HOME.
BUT NO ONE PREDICTED THAT JACKSON WOULD DIE SO SOON AND IN SUCH A VIOLENT WAY.
Russell Smith
My understanding is this, my father was placed in a room with an individual, after he returned back to the facility, and this person that he was in the room with assaulted him early in the morning and he assaulted him with a clock and he inflicted massive wounds and damages to my father around the facial area and the brain area and so forth.
JACKSON DIED OF HIS INJURIES LESS THAN A MONTH LATER.
HIS ROOMMATE, THE MAN WHO IS ACCUSED OF KILLING JACKSON, WAS 50 YEARS OLD AND HAD A HISTORY OF AGGRESSION AND ALTERED MENTAL STATUS ACCORDING TO THE STATE NURSING HOME INSPECTOR'S REPORT.
THE ROOMMATE PLEAD NOT-GUILTY TO FIRST DEGREE MURDER AND AFTER A PSYCHIATRIC REVIEW WAS RULED UNFIT TO STAND TRIAL AND NOW LIVES IN A STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL.
Russell Smith
If they are violent, then you don't want to put them into a situation or an environment where other individuals are less violent or have less tendencies...You are leashing out this population of people who are basically going to feed on them. Not necessarily because they want to do this. It's because they have defects or illnesses that are going to make them do these types of things.
NATIONWIDE RESEARCH DONE BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SHOWS THAT NEARLY 125,000 YOUNG AND MIDDLE-AGED ADULTS WITH SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS LIVED IN U.S. NURSING HOMES LAST YEAR.
THAT'S A 41 PERCENT INCREASE FROM 2002.
SPOKESPEOPLE FOR THE NURSING HOME INDUSTRY SAY SAFETY IS A TOP PRIORITY WHEN ACCEPTING NEW RESIDENTS.
Robert Van Dyk/American Health Care Association the first thing any nursing home is going to look at, is , is this place the appropriate place for this individiual based on there needs. if someone comes to our home and we dont think its the right place the screning process is going to identify that. Our first concern above and beyond anthing is the safety and securing of the residents and staff who are with us at the time. So if someone presents themselves that would not be appropriate for that setting we would not be accepting that person to our home.
SMITH SAYS HE WASN'T AWARE OF WHAT KIND OF ROOMMATE HIS FATHER WAS LIVING WITH AND HE FEARS THAT MORE FAMILIES ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION.
Russell Smith
Unless they tell you, you really don't know what's going on with patients. What type of patients, because I think that most people think when they put a person in a nursing home they initially go there to do there own research and evaluation. they assume that everything is going to be ok.
ALL FAITH PAVILION OWNERSHIP SAYS THEIR STAFF IS TRAINED TO DEAL WITH AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR AND THEY DISPUTE THE STATE FINDINGS THAT JACKSON'S ROOMMATE HAD A HISTORY OF AGGRESSION.
THE NURSING HOME WAS FINED $32,500 FOR FAILING TO PREVENT THE ASSAULT.
