Nizwa and Bahla Fort in Oman
We recorded this travel video in Nizwa, the former capital of Oman. In Nizwa we visited the market halls, the old town and the fort. Then we went by car to Bahla. In Bahla we have the Unesco heritage Bahla Fort viewed. A really huge fortress where you can spend hours.

Bahla Fort is one of four historic fortresses situated at the foot of the Djebel Akhdar highlands in Oman. It was built in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the oasis of Bahla was prosperous under the control of the Banu Nebhan tribe. The fort's ruined adobe walls and towers rise some 165 feet above its sandstone foundations. Nearby to the southwest is the Friday Mosque with a 14th-century sculpted mihrab. The fort was not restored or conserved before 1987, and had fallen into a parlous state, with parts of the walls collapsing each year in the rainy season.
The fort became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It was included in the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1988. Restoration works began in the 1990s, and nearly $9m were spent by the Omani government from 1993 to 1999. It remained covered with scaffolding and closed to tourists for many years. It was removed from the list of endangered sites in 2004.
The Fort at Bahla, together with the nearby forts at Izki and Nizwa, and one further north at Rustaq, were centres of Kharajite resistance to the normalization of Caliph Harun al-Rashid. The town of Bahla, including the oasis, suq and palm grove, is itself surrounded by adobe walls some 12 km long. The town is well known for its pottery

Bahla is a UNESCO World Heritage Site town, located 40 km away from Nizwa, and about 200 km from Oman's capital Muscat which lies in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of Oman. It is notable as the home of one of the oldest fortresses in the country, the 13th century Bahla Fort and the town's pottery.
The fortress and the town are enclosed by extensive remnants of a 12-km long fortified wall. Most buildings are constructed of traditional mud brick, many of them are hundreds of years old. The site is undergoing reconstruction sponsored by UNESCO .
Bahla, Oman - It is called Madinat al-Sehr — the City of Magic. Bahla, one of Oman’s oldest oasis towns and once the capital of the sultan¬ate, is home to many myths and legends of magic. A mysterious aura surrounds the walled city, a sign many say proves that magic is still practised in Bahla, deep in the country’s heartland, 200 km south-west of Muscat.
Pottery jars dating from the sec¬ond half of the fourth millennium BC have been found in old tombs in the oasis city. Today, one can visit a few old workshops near the souq where craftsmen use traditional methods to make clay utensils and decorative objects.
The clay comes from the canyon bed and is labouriously crushed and squashed to make it malleable and then fashioned on the wheel — as potters have done throughout history. Potters mould and curve the clay into shapes and pots of dif¬ferent sizes, which are placed in a dome-shaped kiln heated with wood and palm fronds.

Nizwa Oman
Nizwa (Arabic: نزوى Nizwā) is the largest city in the Ad Dakhiliyah Region in Oman and was the capital of Oman proper. Nizwa is about 140 km (1.5 hours) from Muscat. The population is estimated at around 72,000 people including the two areas of Burkat Al Mooz and Al Jabel Al Akhdar.
Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in Oman and it was once a center of trade, religion, education and art. Its Jama (grand mosque) was formerly a center for Islamic learning. Nizwa acquired its importance because it has been an important meeting point at the base of the Western Hajar Mountains. Set amid a verdant spread of date palms, it is strategically located at the crossroads of routes linking the interior with Muscat and the lower reaches of Dhofar thus serving as the link for a large part of the country. Today, Nizwa is a diverse prosperous place with numerous agricultural, historical and recreational aspects. Nizwa is a center for date growing and is the market place for the area.

Jabreen Castle (حصن جبرين) (also spelled Jibreen Castle) is the most beautiful historic castle in the whole of Oman. This historic castle was constructed in the late 17th century and is located in Bahla in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate about 50 km from Nizwa and 175 KM away from Muscat.
Jabreen Castle was built by Imam Bel’arab bin Sultan Al Yarubi. His father was Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Yarubi the Imam who removed the Portuguese from Oman and the one who expanded Nizwa fort to its current form. Imam Bel’arab inherited from his father a country in a period of peace after the removal of the Portuguese. It is rumored that this palace was actually built through the personal funding of Bel’arab during the lifetime of his father before he became the Imam of the country. The country experienced an era of prosperity and development through the time of Imam Bel’arab until his brother Said bin Sultan succeeded in his scheme to remove him in 1692.
Jabreen Castle is different from other Omani forts because it was not built in the times of war and is not a fortification that was expanded by different Imams overs centuries. It is basically a palace constructed in times of peace by a ruler who was passionate about science and art and that made it the most beautiful historic castle found in the Sultanate. The castle is three stories tall, features two towers, numerous receptions halls, dining areas, meeting rooms, a court room, a library, and classrooms. The interior design of the castle features decorated windows, wooden balconies, arches with inscribed Arabic calligraphy, and breathtaking ceiling artwork.
One of the most significant rooms in Jabreen Castle is the “Sun and Moon Hall”, a special reception hall for important guests that features 14 windows and an intricate ceiling with eye-shaped designs. Another highlight is the inner central yard that provides a private airy outlet to walk towards the dining halls and the court room and provides the residents of the castle with a private outdoors area.

Nizwa Fort is a large castle in Oman.
It was built in the 1650’s by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya’rubi on foundations that go as far back as the 12th century.
Two cannons guard the entrance to the fort like age-old sentinels.
Engraved on them are designs that date back to the mortar-based warfare.
Within the fort are battlements, turrets, twisting staircases, secret shafts and false doors, to deceive the enemy
These water cisterns draw water from an underground stream, ensuring endless supply of water during siege.
The enormous main tower rises 30 metres above the ground
and is 36 metres across.
Nowadays it is Oman's most visited national monument

Bahla Fort was built between the 12thand 15th centuries.
The ruins of the immense fort, with its walls and towers of unbaked brick and its stone foundations, is a remarkable example of this type of fortification.
The city of Bahla lies 25 kilometres away from Nizwa, and is famed in Oman for its pottery making.
The inhabitants of the city were also among the ones who mastered the use of the Falaj system, the ancient Omani practice of transporting water from natural reservoirs to agricultural areas where crops were cultivated.

This fort was built in 1650 by second Yarubi imam Sultan bin siaf Al Yarubi. So this is one of the oldest fort in Oman. This is Oman most visited national monument. To complete this fort it takes 12 years. Nizwa was the capital of Oman before. Just outside of this Nizwa fort you will see Nizwa souq that has many variety of stuff that you can buy. The drive from Muscat to Nizwa fort is around 1 and half hour. And between this drive you will see many camels just other side of rode. If you go by sharing taxi from al sahwa roundabout it will cost you 3 OMR. And if you want to come back by same sharing taxi you will easily get it from outside of Nizwa fort. This fort is different from other fort in Oman because cylindrical shapes of its tower and this tower are biggest tower of fort in Oman. This fort has 7 wells, some prison rooms and prosecution ground. There is a very nice and beautiful gift shop, you can found their many items related with Oman and Oman history. The area inside of fort is very clean same like outside of fort. The height of this fort is 35 meters. And opening time is –
Saturday to Thursday – 8AM – 6PM
Friday – 8 AM-11.30AM then 1.30PM – 6.30PM
Cost –
5 OMR for foreigners and 2 OMR for Omanis.
Children – foreigners – 3 OMR and Omani 1 OMR
