STORYLINE
People across China flocked to temple fairs on Thursday, the first day of the Lunar New Year, emulating an age-old tradition thought to bring good fortune and ensure wishes come true in the year ahead.
The visits came in the first day of the week-long spring festival - the nation's most important holiday.
In Beijing, extra security was enlisted to oversee crowds gathering at the renowned White Cloud Daoist Temple as the year of the monkey kicked off.
Visitors queued in their tens of thousands to take participate in the simplest of acts - rubbing their hands on an image of a monkey carved into one of the stone temple walls.
Touching the monkey is thought to bring good luck for the year ahead.
Others tossed copper coins at a small bell, a symbol of luck, hanging beneath a temple bridge.
Hitting the target bell and making it ring indicates success lies ahead.
Thick clouds of incense drifted across the temple grounds as crowds approached a sacred urn and bowed in prayer.
The monkey, the ninth of the 12 zodiac signs, has a reputation for being quick and smart.
Temple visitors believe the year of the monkey will be better than the previous year of the sheep.
