The Baltic Fleet - Liverpool

Ciao a Liverpool!
“Ciao a Liverpool” is a short film made by the Aspire Trust and directed by Billie Deen-Owen. It follows the exploits of a group from Tuscany visiting the city to witness one of their number receive a special award from the city’s Lord Mayor.
The film documents the reciprocal admiration between Italian visitors to Liverpool and its inhabitants, in this case its students of Italian and their teacher and long-time Italophile, Gerry Murphy.
Scenes are shot in the Piccolino restaurant on the eve of the main event, at the Liverpool Town Hall and on tour around the city's museums and visitor attractions from the Beatles Story museum at theAlbert Dock to the Baltic Fleet pub and the Casa Italia, finishing high above the city at the Panoramic 34 Bar.
Meanwhile, students of Italian from Liverpool City Council’s Adult Learning Service deliver a special tribute to the author of the poem “Ode a Liverpool” in the form of the English translation of his unique travelogue presented to him by Cllr. Nick Small in homage to his enduring affection for the city and in celebration of the Italian culture which they find equally worthy of esteem.
Sadly, all good things were to come to an end. Though we soon discovered the limits to reciprocity, the film documentary captures a moment when each person involved here in Liverpool took away with them happy memories of a job well-done on behalf of others, of which we remain proud.
The film highlights the open-hearted generosity of true Merseysiders, a philosophy which remains alive and well in the city of Liverpool.

RMS ADRIATIC: Finest of Four (1907)
At the beginning of the 20th Century the White Star Line produced the CELTIC CLASS ocean liners commonly known as The Big Four. The first three, CELTIC, CEDRIC, and BALTIC, were each the largest ship in the world upon their entry into service. The last of the four would never carry this title due to the introduction of Cunard's colossal LUSITANIA and MAURETANIA. However, the RMS ADRIATIC of 1907 was still the flagship of what many considered the finest fleet in the world. She was the largest and fastest of her sisters and the first ship to inaugurate White Star's Southampton-New York express service. Her interiors were second to none and bear quite a resemblance to the forthcoming OLYMPIC CLASS ships. Especially the golden oak-panelled lounge, spacious dining saloon, and stained glass smoking room. She also featured the first Turkish Bath at sea (an early form of spa) and a plunge bath that foreshadowed OLYMPIC's swimming pool. The ADRIATIC returned to the Liverpool run once OLYMPIC entered service although she would frequently be called upon to fill in gaps on the express run throughout the years. She is well known for repatriating many survivors and crew of the RMS TITANIC including J. Bruce Ismay and Millvina Dean. After a successful career she left Liverpool for the last time on 19 December 1934. Her destination was Japan where she was scrapped in 1935.
