Landscape Photography in the Canadian Rockies | Castle Mountain and Lake Minnewanka
#landscapephotography #winterphotography #canadianrockies
Join me as I travel in the dead of winter to Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. In this video I make a quick stop at Lake Minnewanka to photograph sunset with some ice cracks and methane bubbles. I woke up bright and early the next morning and headed to Castle Mountain to photograph some beautiful light on some snow pillows.
All photos shot with my Nikon D800e and Tamron 15-30 2.8 lens. All video shot with my Samsung Galaxy S8. Audio recorded with a Rode VideoMicro.

Banff National Park: Your Complete Guide To An Epic Trip In Canada
A trip to Banff National Park is about experiencing the outdoors. And winter is one of the best times to do it. Come along as we show you what makes this park one of the best winter time destinations. We start at the Cave and Basin National Park because this is the birthplace of Canada’s National Parks System. In the 1880’s three-railway workers came across the thermal springs (though Aboriginals discovered it several thousands year before) and felt a need to protect it, leading to Banff Hot Springs Preserve, which later became Banff National Park. Today, visitors can walk through a dimly lit tunnel to see the underground cave and bubbling thermal waters. Outside, the journey continues to see the basin, where if you look hard enough you will notice the Banff Snail, which can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Swimming was allowed until 1992 but Parks Canada no longer allows people to dip in to protect the endangered snail.
Next up, we are captivated by the Canadian Rockies on our Fat Bikes (rented from Soul Ski and Bike and headed to ride the Tunnel Bench Loop- a legitimate single-track flowy mountain bike trail. Here, you feel a world away from the town because you are surrounded by a dense forest and can catch awesome views of Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, the Fairholme Range and hoodoos. There is minimal climbing making the trail perfect for beginner (but in shape) to intermediate mountain bikers.
After a day in the mountains, it’s always fun to wrap up with a social scene. In town, Banff Ave. is the main drag with all kinds of shops, nightclubs and restaurants set up. A local’s favorite is the Park Distillery, the only distillery in a national park, and makes whiskey, gin and vodka with water run off from Victoria Glacier in Lake Louise. The food is campfire inspired cooking with menu items like wood fired lamb chops and a massive steak sandwich.
To wind down the night, sleep in a castle. The Fairmont Hotel, built in 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, was rebuilt following a fire in 1928 and is now modeled after a Scottish baronial castle. And it’s absolutely massive- with more than 700 guest rooms, 13 restaurants, several shops, ballrooms and lounges. Plus a fitness center (with classes offered throughout the week) indoor pool, hot tub and an outdoor heated pool with wonderful views.
Throughout, you will find elegant and ornate touches with several pieces imported from all over the world.
Landscape Photography in Banff National Park
Landscape photography in the summer can be tricky because there's just not time to sleep. Enter, the night shift.
My Instagram:
My Camera Gear:
I've started the landscape photography summer night shift which essentially means that I'll be sleeping in the day and up all night doing photography. It just makes more sense in the summer when sunset it 1030pm and sunrise is 5am. If I want to photograph both, here in Canada, I'd only get a couple hours of sleep each night. So instead, as I share on this vlog, I'm switching my life schedule and will be up on the night shift to make the most of my photography opportunities here in Canada for the next week or so.
On this photography vlog, I'm over in Banff National Park photographing Bow Lake.

Winter Photography: Catching the Train in Banff National Park
#landscapephotography #banff
After getting caught in a snow storm on the Icefields Parkway I re-routed and headed for Morant's Curve in Banff National Park to capture several winter scenes at this classic lookout. The landscape looked spectacular but the driving snow made shooting challenging. I managed to come home with four very different images from the same place.

Landscape Photography in Banff National Park
To see the full-sized images from this trip to Banff National Park, check out my travel photography blog here:
Home, sweet home. It's always fun going back to places I've been before. There's no way to explain how fun it is to go back home. I've been away from Alberta, Canada for 14 months now, so getting back to the land that made me has been great.
This week, Volkeswagen Canada was kind enough to give me the keys to their amazing 2014 Touareg which is a really fantastic ride. In 3 days, we put over 700 kilometers on it through Banff National Park hitting up famous sites like Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Mount Rundle, Johnston Canyon, and more. Of course, as a travel photographer I had my camera handy for the assignment. Travel photography in Banff National Park is fairly easy. There are just so many amazing sights. Of course, you need to be shooting at sunrise and sunset to get that nice soft light and dramatic skies. Thus, we were up before dawn each day shooting, and were rewarded with some amazing light at the sights. I've shot Moraine Lake about 5 times, and never did I get such cool light as this time. Gotta love that!
Anyways, lots of cool content still to come from Banff, Alberta, and beyond, so stay subscribed.
