In 2007, after my trip at Hobart, I traveled to the second city called Launceston a city down south of Hobart to see Cradle Mountain and hiking up & down the hills rising to 1,545 metres above sea level. The mountain is composed of dolerite columns, similar to many of the other mountains in the area. I was so tired hiking but it was such a worthwhile views along the way up above!
It is a strenuous (recommended allotted time: 6.5 hours) return hike from the Dove Lake car park. The climb up the rocky part of the mountain involves scrambling over large boulders for several hundred metres.
The entire climb is exposed to any bad weather that may arrive quickly and at any time. From the summit, (where there was a trig point tower) there are spectacular 360° views, encompassing Dove Lake, Barn Bluff and Mount Ossa.
The area was glaciated during the last ice age (about 10 000 years ago) when a huge 6 km ice cap formed and glaciers flowed from its edges carving the landscape into dramatic shapes with their inexorable erosive powers.
The first human settlement of the region occurred when the local Aborigines moved into the highlands as the glaciers began retreating. The extensive button grass plains are a legacy of their extensive use of fire to clear pathways through the rugged terrain and to aid hunting by attracting animals to the tender shoots of the new vegetation.
Early reports of the Aborigines in the area tell of recently burnt vegetation and well constructed huts of bark some of which were still standing 25 years after the last of the people had been removed.
Archaeological research in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park has revealed many Aboriginal sites consisting of stone tools and quarries which suggests that people moved mainly through the valleys with occasional visits to higher areas.

HIKING | The Overland Track - Tasmania, Australia | Part 2/2
The Overland Track is arguably Australia's most famous hiking track. Situated in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania; the track runs for 65 kilometres from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair. You can also hike along Lake St Clair bringing the total length to 82 kilometres, and increasing the duration by a day or two.
The track winds through terrain ranging from sheer mountains, temperate rain forest, wild rivers and alpine plains all in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The track can be hiked year round, but must be booked at least 24 hours in advance between October 1 - May 31. During this time of the year, you can only hike the track North to South (Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair). Outside of these dates, you can hike the track in either direction, and you do not need to book. No matter the time of the year, you are required to have a current National Parks Pass.
The track generally takes 6-7 days to complete, and there are side trips along the way. Danya and I hiked the track in April and booked it months in advance as it does fill up quickly. Our personal favourite side trip was exploring Pine Valley. You could spend several days in this area alone. It can even be accessed from Lake St Clair without doing the rest of the track, as it's technically not part of the Overland Track.
Even in the wet, windy, and cold conditions we were met with, this hike was absolutely amazing and couldn't recommend it enough to anyone. If you would like more useful information or to book the track, check out the Parks and Wildlife Tasmania web page:

We came upon this little guy out for his early evening walk at Waldheim Chalet, Cradle Mountain.
One laid back wombat, he didn't seem to fussed with the intrusion of the GoPro camera in his face.

Winter at Cradle Mountain
I spent 4 days hiking and camping in the snow in and around Cradle Mountain. On 2 of the days I had blue skies whilst the other days were somewhat inclement to say the least. The whole area was covered in a mantle of snow which made the whole landscape quite magical. I was treated to a rather special sunrise on Barn Bluff as well as a sunset on Cradle Mountain. One of the best trips I have had weather wise to this magical area and I have no doubt that I will keep returning in the future. In my view winter is the best time to visit the area especially after a heavy dumping of snow !!
